- Chapter 8 - I Hate This Body
The brocade box was tucked securely into Chi Lengzhao’s backpack, which she kept close beside her. The car glided smoothly through the villa district on the way back to the hospital. She leaned against the comfortable rear seat, watching the unfamiliar cityscape pass by.
The buildings, streets, signs, and scenery—all of it reminded her that she truly was living inside this fictional world.
From the driver’s seat, Xiao Song glanced in the rearview mirror. Miss Chi was unusually quiet today.
As she stepped out of the car, Chi Lengzhao caught a glimpse of something shiny in the backseat. Reaching into the crack, she pulled out a tube of lipstick.
If it wasn’t hers, then it must have belonged to one of the women the original Chi Lengzhao had brought into the car.
Chi Lengzhao wrinkled her nose in disgust and tossed the lipstick to the driver.
“Xiao Song, get the car detailed. Replace all the interior upholstery.”
“Yes, Miss.”
“No—actually, have the interiors of all the cars at home replaced.”
Xiao Song paused in surprise, but quickly responded, “Understood, Miss.”
Back in the hospital room, Housekeeper Zhou greeted her immediately.
“Miss, you’re back.”
Chi Lengzhao nodded, took off her hoodie, and went into the bathroom to change back into the hospital gown.
“Miss, Madam Shen came by again earlier. I told her, as you instructed, that you were out walking in the hospital garden.”
“Is she still here?”
“She should’ve left by now. I saw the young madam escort her out.”
Chi Lengzhao nodded, then suddenly asked, “Did my father come by today?”
Housekeeper Zhou was taken aback, unsure why she was asking, but answered truthfully.
“No, the master, the madam, and the young master haven’t visited.”
Chi Lengzhao wasn’t surprised in the slightest. She calmly washed her hands, then said, “Before I’m discharged, throw away all the skincare, makeup, and bath products in the house. Replace everything with new ones.”
“Yes, Miss.” Though puzzled, Housekeeper Zhou asked no questions. Perhaps the young miss wanted a fresh start and to cleanse any lingering bad luck after being discharged.
“And replace all the bedding. Go for something simpler and more elegant,” Chi Lengzhao added, remembering from the book that Shen Zhixi’s room in the Shen family home had always been minimalist and refined. “Curtains, decorations, everything must be new. Replace the bed as well. And take off that dual-password lock.”
“Yes, Miss.”
“And I want all the bathrooms I’ve used redone. Renovate them. Prioritize speed.”
Shock flickered in Housekeeper Zhou’s eyes, but she quickly composed herself.
“Yes, Miss.”
Only then did Chi Lengzhao feel slightly relieved. She wanted to get rid of every trace the original Chi Lengzhao had left behind.
She didn’t want to use anything that had been touched by that woman. It felt dirty.
Suddenly, she remembered something even more important. She looked down at her own body.
She needed a full medical check-up.
She felt so disgusted by this body. But unfortunately, she couldn’t get a new one.
In another hospital room, Shen Zhixi was sitting on the bed, gently tapping on her phone.
“Zhixi, I’m so sorry I missed your wedding! Next time I’m back, I’ll make it up to you with a huge gift.”
The message was from Shao Qiuqiu, her childhood friend and the daughter of the Shao Group. Like Zhixi, she was also an Omega.
In recent years, the Shao family’s traditional business had declined due to new technologies. Their company had been slowly shrinking, and Qiuqiu had no interest in running it. After her father closed down the business, the whole family settled abroad, living comfortably as ordinary wealthy people.
“Don’t worry about it. Just take care of your mom.”
Qiuqiu’s mother had fallen ill right before her flight, so she had to stay behind to care for her, missing Shen Zhixi’s wedding.
“I saw the wedding news online. You looked gorgeous! And Chi Lengzhao was… very unique.”
Qiuqiu was kind enough not to mock Miss Chi’s infamous “zombie bride” look, unlike the rest of the internet.
“How is Chi Lengzhao treating you? How was the wedding night?”
Shen Zhixi stared at the message, her thoughts drifting to her past life’s wedding night.
After the guests had left, she had gone back to her room to change. Chi Lengzhao had burst in, reeking of alcohol, locked the door, and lunged at her.
She had stiffly pushed her away.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re my legal wife. It’s our wedding night. Don’t I get to mark you?”
“Chi Lengzhao, you promised me before the wedding!”
“What did I promise again? Oh right, not to touch you. That was before we were married. Back then, I wasn’t entitled. But now, my dear wife, if I’m not entitled, who is?”
“You lied to me. You’re disgusting!”
“What kind of bride kicks her spouse out on their wedding night? Come on, drink this.”
“What are you doing? I’m not drinking that!”
“It’s not poison. Don’t be so dramatic. Drink it, and I’ll make you feel good.”
“Get away from me!”
Then she had been forced to drink the liquid as Chi Lengzhao gripped her jaw.
Hatred and disgust rose in Shen Zhixi’s eyes as the memory resurfaced.
When Qiuqiu didn’t get a reply, she sent another message.
“I heard about Meixi’s situation. I’m sorry I can’t help more. But if you need a few million, just say the word.”
Shen Zhixi gave a faint smile.
“Thanks, but it’s not that bad yet.”
“Zhixi, why don’t you just come live here like me? Be a peaceful, rich, ordinary person. Move to Country C. We can be neighbors.”
Sell Meixi?
Shen Zhixi fell into silence. Meixi had been built by her grandfather and father, the result of their life’s work.
She still remembered her grandfather gently patting her head when she was little and saying,
“Zhixi is so smart and beautiful. One day, Meixi will have a lady boss.”
“What’s a lady boss, Grandpa?”
“It means you’ll be the one in charge. When that day comes, everyone in Meixi will listen to you.”
“Wow, does everything have to go my way?”
A child is just a child. Back then, she only felt proud—how could she have understood the weight of what it meant to be the head of a household?
That was when Shao Qiuqiu began dreaming about being neighbors with Shen Zhixi.
“My mom really likes you. She always says I’m not ladylike enough—too loud and clumsy, nothing like a proper girl. But you? You’re exactly her type: poised, elegant, a true heiress.”
Shen Zhixi gave a bitter smile. “What heiress? That’s not who I am.”
“Oh right, are you still planning to act?”
Shen Zhixi had dabbled in the entertainment industry before—Shao Qiuqiu knew about it.
When a talent scout approached Shen Zhixi, still a student at the time, asking if she’d consider joining the industry, Shao Qiuqiu had been more excited than Shen Zhixi herself.
Zhixi had all the right qualities: naturally fair skin with a cool undertone, striking features, and a unique elegance that instantly set her apart from the other starlets of the time.
So, when she landed her first GG endorsement, she shot to fame, attracting a massive following almost overnight.
However, Mr. Shen didn’t approve of her entering showbiz. As the daughter of the Shen family, she didn’t need to chase wealth or marry into power.
After the GG campaign, she returned to her studies. It wasn’t until a few years later that she starred in a period drama, Echoes of the World, playing the female lead, Rong Yin.
Though the drama featured a female Alpha–female Omega pairing and had little early promotion, the stunning looks and solid acting of both leads made it a surprise hit. It was a critical and commercial success. Her co-star also rose to fame instantly. The two actresses became top-tier celebrities, frequently trending online, with fans obsessing over their on-screen chemistry.
Echoes of the World marked the peak of Shen Zhixi’s acting career. Afterwards, she only occasionally appeared in GG endorsements.
Not long after, Meixi faced a financial crisis. Later, the Chi family proposed a marriage alliance, and Shen Zhixi agreed to date Chi Lengzhao. After over a year of dating, they married successfully.
In her previous life, Chi Lengzhao had strictly controlled her social interactions after their wedding. He grew paranoid even when Shao Qiuqiu visited, let alone allowing Zhixi to go out filming or interact with other Alphas.
Effectively, she had completely withdrawn from the entertainment industry after getting married.
As for whether she would act again—this time around, it didn’t matter to Shen Zhixi. All she wanted was for Meixi to recover.
“No, I don’t plan to for now.”
Shao Qiuqiu sent back a deeply regretful emoji.
“Boohoo, I’ll never get to see your new dramas again.”
“I won’t get to brag anymore—‘See that gorgeous lead actress? She’s my friend.’”
“No more set visits. I won’t even get a chance to glimpse those big stars…”
She followed up with a few adorable crying emojis.
Someone knocked on the door. Shen Zhixi looked up. “Come in.”
Seeing who it was, the smile vanished from her face. She quickly typed “Talk later” into the chat window and locked her phone.
“Am I interrupting?” Chi Lengzhao asked with a polite, professional smile.
“No,” she replied, looking at him. “What is it?”
“I’m here to fulfill part of our post-marriage agreement,” Chi Lengzhao said, opening his bag and pulling out a silk-covered box. “The sapphire necklace you requested.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Shen Zhixi’s eyes. She hadn’t expected him to hand over the necklace so easily.
In her past life, she’d accidentally discovered that Chi Lengzhao often went to the basement and would stay there for hours.
One time, after drinking too much, he’d seen a news report about a house fire. The owner had rushed back in to save a pet. Surprisingly, Chi Lengzhao didn’t mock the man’s foolishness—instead, he slurred, “Can you believe it? I’d go in too… Some things are just that important… You’d escape on your own, right? But a necklace wouldn’t. It’d burn…”
Later, while he was away, Shen Zhixi secretly used a key to open the basement door. She visited several times before finally discovering a hidden compartment. Inside, she found the silk box. There really was a necklace inside—a modest sapphire necklace, nothing extraordinarily expensive.
Now, she hesitantly took the box from his hands and opened it.
Sure enough, it was that very same sapphire necklace.
A platinum chain, with a teardrop-shaped sapphire pendant.
In her previous life, the necklace Chi Lengzhao had guarded like her life—cherished and hidden as if it were more important than her own existence—was now handed over to Shen Zhixi with surprising ease.
“Chi Lengzhao, are you really willing to entrust this to me?”
Chi Lengzhao smiled gently. “Of course. You’re my wife. What’s mine is yours. It’s no different if you keep it.”
Shen Zhixi let out a cold laugh, as if to say, You expect me to believe that?
“You should put it away. There are too many people in the hospital—it’d be bad if it got lost.”
She closed the silk box and tucked it under her pillow.
“Miss Shen, I’m sincere about this. I’ve given you what you asked for. So, can our agreement now take effect?”
Chi Lengzhao’s eyes were earnest—she clearly took the post-marriage agreement seriously.
Two voices battled inside Shen Zhixi’s mind.
One said, Don’t trust her. She’s a cunning, treacherous devil. Don’t make deals with her—she’s already plotting how to hurt you.
The other countered, You now hold the thing most important to her. There’s no fear of her going back on her word. It’s only a year. Once it’s over, you can divorce her. At least you’ll be able to answer to your parents.
Her chest rose and fell with tension. Even her cold, porcelain-like cheeks flushed faintly. Finally, she bit her lip and said, “I’ll say it again—just one year. During that year, you’re not to harass me, not to restrict me. After a year, we divorce peacefully, with no debts between us.”
“Of course.” Chi Lengzhao seemed genuinely pleased. She reached for the two glass cups on the coffee table, twisted open a bottle of mineral water, and poured a little into each cup.
She handed one to Shen Zhixi and held the other in her own hand.
“There’s no wine here, so let’s toast with water. Cheers to our successful one-year ‘marriage agreement’!”
She clinked her glass lightly against Zhixi’s, then downed her water in one gulp.
Shen Zhixi watched her finish, then raised her own glass and drank it all.
“Get some rest. I don’t have anything else for now. From now on, I’ll call you Xixi—it sounds more affectionate. You can call me Zhaozhao, Lengleng, or even Chichi.”
The sheer cheesiness of those nicknames made Shen Zhixi’s skin crawl. She forced herself to suppress the discomfort and replied stiffly, “Zhaozhao.”
Chi Lengzhao immediately beamed, her eyes narrowing in delight. With a playful curve of her lips, she said, “Then I’ll head out now, Xixi.”
That smile—mischievous, a little sweet, even faintly endearing—was a look Shen Zhixi had never seen on her before. Her bright eyes sparkled like sunlit grapes in a vineyard.
“Why are you doing this?” Shen Zhixi suddenly asked. “Why agree to pretend to be married to me?”
Chi Lengzhao turned around. Her tall figure framed by the doorway, she looked back over her shoulder with a smile. “I told you—I’m going to save Meixi.”
