- Chapter 1 - First Encounter
There were actually two exits in Building B. However, due to a lack of funds to hire an additional security guard, the back door was locked. Besides, the back door only opened onto a narrow alley where hardly anyone passed by. There used to be a small stationery shop relying on student traffic to stay afloat, but after the alley became deserted, the shop eventually closed down.
As a result, the back alley started being used for other purposes.
A group of young boys, still childish in appearance, stood there clutching their schoolbags. Their uniform sleeves were rolled up as they propped a foot on the door frame, hands casually stuffed in their pockets, tossing their hair as if trying to look cool.
In the middle of the group was a thin girl in a school uniform who had been knocked to the ground.
“Did you not hear what I said?” one of the boys asked as he tossed aside his schoolbag. He stepped forward and brought his foot down directly on the girl’s hand.
“I told you to bring me some suppressants from your grandma’s store on Monday. Where are they?” He pressed harder with his foot. The girl’s face twisted in pain, but she remained silent, lips tightly sealed.
“Playing dumb now?” someone nearby sneered.
School had ended a while ago, and with this place so hidden, no one was likely to walk by.
“Your family doesn’t even need those suppressants. What’s the big deal if you offer them to me?” the boy squatted down, smiling smugly as he stared at the girl.
“No.” Her voice was soft, almost trembling, but still clear.
The boy cursed and raised his hand to slap her. His swing carried full force, cutting through the air sharply.
Smack.
The slap landed on the back of someone else’s head. A figure in a mint-green hoodie had suddenly stepped in front of the girl. The sound of the hit was loud and clear.
Jiang Nian opened her eyes, which she had shut tightly in fear, and found herself staring into a pair of deep crimson eyes. The girl in the hoodie had one hand holding Jiang Nian’s shoulder, shielding her completely. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, as though she had sprinted to get there.
Even though vampires had stronger bodies than humans, Gu Li was a particularly weak one. That slap had definitely hurt.
Holding the back of her head, Gu Li stood up in anger and faced the boy behind her.
“I could report you for intentional assault. Don’t think you can get away with everything just because you’re underage.”
“Stay out of it. Jiang Nian is the daughter of a murderer. Ask anyone at school, who would like someone like her?” The boy jeered at the girl who was about his height. “What, are you going to side with a killer’s daughter?”
She was the outcast of the school. No one sympathized with her or liked her. The mark of her father’s crime was something both she and her grandmother would carry forever. The injustice placed on her was seen as justice by others. Her pain gave them satisfaction.
These words flashed through Gu Li’s mind and her body stiffened. Jiang Nian, seeing her reaction, let the hope in her eyes fade again. She laughed bitterly at herself.
Of course. Who would stand up for her?
How many times had she hoped, only to be disappointed?
The security guard who had followed Gu Li came running, finally breaking up the gang. He chased after the boys while Gu Li, now free from the book’s influence, turned around and tried to help Jiang Nian.
Her hand reached out but stopped short.
Jiang Nian’s slender hand had several abrasions from being stepped on. Tiny droplets of bl00d had begun to surface. Earlier, the crowd had masked the scent, but now, with just the two of them, Gu Li’s vampire instincts were triggered instantly. She quickly covered her nose and stepped back.
Jiang Nian noticed the movement. She staggered but managed to stand on her own. Her uniform was covered in dirty shoe prints and her right leg ached badly. She forced herself to stay upright and thanked Gu Li coldly, then turned and limped away.
Only after Jiang Nian had walked some distance did Gu Li dare to uncover her nose. She took deep breaths. It was clear she had pushed herself too far by coming out right after her susceptible period. Her craving for the heroine’s bl00d was far stronger than she had expected.
She didn’t belong to this world. This was a fictional ABO universe from a book. In her previous life, Gu Li had suffered from a rare bl00d disease and had died after multiple failed rounds of chemo and radiation therapy. She had never found a suitable stem cell donor.
After her death, she woke up as the villainous vampire in the very book she had once read. Ironically, she had read it because the vampire character, who shared her name, also suffered from a strange bl00d disorder and was constantly tormented by it.
Who would have thought she would become that character after death?
The vampire in the story didn’t end well. Although she eventually found the female lead, whose bl00d acted as a cure, she became greedy and drained her too often. As a result, the heroine’s health deteriorated. Once she awakened as an omega with a milk-tea-scented pheromone and attracted the admiration of all the male leads, they punished the vampire. With no cure left, she eventually succumbed to the disease again.
Gu Li was not the original character. She never intended to treat the heroine that way. However, every time her illness flared up during a susceptible period, it felt like thousands of ants were chewing through her veins. The pain was suffocating, worse than anything she had experienced during chemotherapy.
Without the heroine, she wouldn’t survive for long.
Originally, her storyline wasn’t supposed to begin for a few more months. According to the book, Jiang Nian would suffer internal bleeding from today’s incident and undergo major surgery. That was how the vampire would later discover the heroine’s bl00d could relieve her symptoms.
Her susceptible period came every two months. If she waited until her plotline arrived, she would have to endure several more of these agonizing cycles.
Refusing bl00d was not an option. Killing the heroine was out of the question.
Gu Li frowned and looked toward the figure disappearing in the distance. In the early parts of the story, Jiang Nian was too pitiful. It felt like the author made her suffer just to highlight the greatness of the male savior character.
Yet she endured everything completely alone.
If Gu Li could help her, then why should Jiang Nian have to walk such a painful path all by herself?
Jiang Nian walked slowly. Her grandmother’s store wasn’t too far from the school, but it wasn’t close either. In her current state, she couldn’t let her grandmother see her like this. It would only make her worry.
She still had some spare change and bought a bottle of iodine from a nearby pharmacy to disinfect her wounds. Holding the bottle, she sat down beside a flowerbed near the store. With her good hand, she began to twist the cap open.
The smell of iodine was sharp. She dipped a cotton swab and moved to apply it to her wound.
A fair hand gently took the cotton swab from her fingers. Jiang Nian looked up and once again met those striking crimson eyes.
Gu Li was now wearing an N95 mask she had just bought from the pharmacy. She crouched in front of Jiang Nian, a small pile of medical supplies beside her.
The mask blocked most of the scent. Although the sight of bl00d still triggered her instincts, it was within the range she could now control.
“There’s dust in your wound. You have to clean it before using iodine.” Her voice was soft as she carefully took Jiang Nian’s injured hand. With the other hand, she opened a bottle of saline solution and gently rinsed the wounds on her palm and the back of her hand.
The boy’s shoe must have stepped on something filthy. Fine grit and dirt clung to the broken skin.
“You…” Jiang Nian let her hold her hand. The saline stung a little as it touched the cuts. Once the wounds were clean, Gu Li took a new cotton swab and began to apply the iodine carefully.
It was a pity she was wearing a mask. Otherwise, this was the kind of moment where she should have leaned in and gently blown on the wound.
That was what Gu Li thought.
“Alright, roll up your pant leg,” she said, carefully placing Jiang Nian’s soft hand back on her knee.
The way she had been limping, it was clear her leg had taken a bad hit.
Jiang Nian hesitated, then slowly pulled up the leg of her pants. Her right knee was badly bruised, with a large patch of dark purple and faint traces of bl00d under the skin. She was so thin that once the loose fabric was rolled up, her skinny little leg looked fragile enough to break with a touch.
Gu Li treated the injury on her leg just as gently as she had treated her hand. There was still a tube of bruise and sprain ointment in her bag. She placed it with the rest of the medicine and handed everything to Jiang Nian.
“Make sure to apply it when you get home. And remember to clean and disinfect the wounds every day.”
“Thank you… thank you.” Jiang Nian stood there, dazed, as she took the items. It had been such a long time since anyone had shown her kindness that it almost felt like a dream.
“Can you get home on your own? Do you want me to walk you?”
That gentle voice still echoed in her ears as she walked slowly, holding the bag of medicine. She was almost at her grandmother’s little shop.
Her grandmother was standing outside, hunched over, glancing up and down the street, clearly worried. Jiang Nian quickly hid her injured hand inside her uniform. One by one, she stuffed the medicine into her pockets, then crumpled the empty bag and tucked it away. She straightened her posture and did her best to walk normally, as if nothing had happened.
“Grandma.” Her voice was naturally soft, but when she spoke to the only family she had, it sounded even warmer and more affectionate.
“Nian Nian, what happened? Why are you home so late?” Grandma Jiang walked over with concern in her eyes.
“It’s nothing. The teacher said they needed to talk to me, so I stayed a little longer.” Jiang Nian smoothly gave the excuse she had prepared in advance.
Grandma Jiang glanced at the dirt marks on her uniform and understood right away what had likely happened. But seeing the forced smile on Jiang Nian’s face, she said nothing more. She just nodded and let the girl hold onto her arm as they walked home together.
The shop was tiny. Outside, there was a small wooden sign listing a few basic items for sale. On the gray wall behind it, someone had used red paint to scrawl angry, hateful words.
Murderer. A life for a life.
Go die.
The sight was unbearable.
If that girl had walked her home and seen this, she probably would have backed away. Even earlier, when she heard that boy call Jiang Nian a murderer’s daughter, her hesitation had been obvious.
Maybe she had only stood up for her because she had not seen this side of things with her own eyes. But now, standing in front of such cruel words, even someone like her might begin to see Jiang Nian the same way the rest of the school did.
To them, she was someone to be feared, someone to stay far away from.
