- Chapter 11 - I Want to Ask You for a Favor
“Your hormone levels are unstable. You should bring that alpha in for testing as soon as possible.” The doctor clicked the end of his pen and pointed to a few lines in the middle of the report.
On the paper, the numbers highlighted in blue pen were clearly much higher than the normal reference range, showing signs that something was off in her body.
“Let me take a look at the back of your neck.” The doctor reached to remove Jiang Nian’s suppression patch, but before he could fully peel it off, she flinched and cried out in pain.
“Have your emotions been fluctuating a lot recently?” the doctor asked. “Undifferentiated glands can release pheromones when emotional. And since you’re in pre-heat, your glands don’t have a fixed gender pattern. Sometimes they release alpha pheromones, sometimes omega. When mixed together, they can cause swelling in your nape.”
He was clearly experienced. He wiped her neck gently with a specialized cloth and repeated himself once more.
“You should bring someone in to compare pheromones as soon as possible. Otherwise, it might affect your differentiation.”
Jiang Nian’s emotional ups and downs lately weren’t without reason. Mu Lan had been hovering around her and Gu Li far too often. But she had already blocked the excuse he used to get close to Gu Li through study questions.
Holding the prescription bottles the doctor had given her, Jiang Nian stood at the bus stop outside the hospital, waiting.
She had already opened the WeChat chat with Gu Li but didn’t know how to begin.
Outside the window, the scenery passed by in a blur. She stared blankly at a fixed spot.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
A new message popped up on the very chat screen she had been looking at.
My Light: Nian Nian, I want to ask you for a favor.
Gu Li stood frozen in her room, staring at her phone. For the past few weeks, she had played the role of a personal tutor, helping Jiang Nian every day. While other students studied quietly during self-study sessions, Gu Li and Mu Lan would swap seats so she could sit beside Jiang Nian and go over difficult questions.
She had no idea how Jiang Nian had convinced Mu Lan to stop asking her questions directly and instead accept the idea that she would learn from Gu Li and then teach him. In any case, her job was to switch seats and tutor Jiang Nian.
A good best friend doesn’t get close to the guy her friend likes. Gu Li thought she had done well—being thoughtful of Jiang Nian’s feelings, offering hugs when needed, holding her hand after school, and keeping her company with patience. Aside from the things she couldn’t do during Jiang Nian’s period, she had done just about everything right.
She was practically worthy of a “Three-Star Best Friend” award.
But even the best student had her struggles. Her next susceptibility period was only a week away, and if she couldn’t get Jiang Nian’s bl00d, she would have to suffer alone in her room again. The sharp pain from the last time was still fresh in her mind. Gu Li really didn’t want to go through it again.
Still, saying this kind of thing face-to-face was awkward and embarrassing. So she chose to ask through WeChat.
When Jiang Nian replied with, “What is it?” Gu Li quickly sent the message she had already drafted.
My Light: My susceptibility period is coming. I’ll have a strong craving for bl00d. Last time, when I bit you, it was because your bl00d helped ease my symptoms. So… can you donate a little to me before it starts? Please, please.
After sending it, she turned her phone over, unsure of how Jiang Nian would react.
Buzz. Another message arrived just a few moments later.
She cautiously picked up her phone, squinting as she peeked at the screen.
Jiang Nian: Sure. But I also have a favor to ask you.
So easy? Gu Li was surprised and typed back quickly.
Gu Li: What is it?
Jiang Nian: Come to the hospital with me to test our pheromone compatibility.
Now it was Jiang Nian’s turn to feel nervous. She wasn’t sure how Gu Li would respond.
She didn’t expect Gu Li’s reply to come almost immediately.
Gu Li: Of course.
Both of them had been afraid the other would find their request unreasonable. But instead, they felt relieved. It meant they both needed each other, and they were helping each other in return.
The specialist who had been studying pre-heat cases met with Jiang Nian and her alpha the next afternoon. He took samples of glandular fluid from both their necks using a syringe and sent them off for testing. While doing so, he noticed something interesting.
This alpha had very low sensitivity to her own pheromones.
Gu Li had just removed her suppression patch for the sample collection. Since her susceptibility period was approaching, she occasionally leaked small amounts of pheromones without realizing it.
“Do you smell anything?” the doctor asked, glancing at Jiang Nian, who had started scratching the back of her neck after catching the scent.
He looked teasingly at Gu Li.
“What? The smell of disinfectant?” Gu Li asked, confused.
“You didn’t catch the lavender scent from your own pheromones?”
“Lavender?” Gu Li turned to Jiang Nian.
“Did you smell lavender?”
Jiang Nian nodded seriously in response.
Even though she didn’t actually smell anything, it wasn’t surprising. She had never been particularly sensitive to pheromones in the first place.
The doctor let out a quiet sigh. This alpha was beautiful, yes, but she probably had some functional shortcomings. If she couldn’t even smell her own pheromones, she likely wasn’t very active in that regard either. Looking at the girl in front of him, he couldn’t help but think that if Jiang Nian really differentiated one day, this alpha might not be able to meet her needs.
While the doctor was spiraling through all his assumptions, the test results appeared on his computer.
“Pheromone compatibility: 97 percent. That high?” He clicked the report open, scanned it quickly, then turned toward them.
“Here’s the situation. Your pheromones and hers are highly compatible. If you choose to differentiate into an alpha, your pheromone profile will most likely develop to resemble hers. If you choose to become an omega, it’s harder to say exactly what your scent will be like, but it will definitely be more compatible with hers.”
The doctor, already convinced that Gu Li was lacking in certain ways, immediately leaned toward suggesting Jiang Nian choose to become an alpha. That way, she wouldn’t be let down later.
So he made his advice very clear.
“If you want to differentiate into an alpha, then try to avoid contact with her over the next few weeks. Your glands have already adapted to her pheromones. If you cut off exposure now, your body is more likely to shift away from that influence.”
Jiang Nian was still waiting for him to explain the omega option, but the doctor abruptly stopped talking.
“Doctor?”
Didn’t he say it was a choice? What about the other option?
The doctor gave Gu Li a meaningful look before answering.
“If you want to become an omega, then try to maintain frequent skin contact. Your glands, when exposed to the same alpha pheromone repeatedly, will lean toward adapting to it in a more submissive, compatible way, encouraging omega differentiation.”
Jiang Nian turned to look at Gu Li. Without hesitation, Gu Li said, “Just choose whatever you like. I’ll support you either way.”
If Jiang Nian became an alpha, they could be cool girls together. If she became an omega, they could be a perfectly balanced duo. Either way was fine—as long as she could get Jiang Nian’s bl00d to ease her susceptibility symptoms.
Though in all honesty, Jiang Nian was more likely to choose omega. After all, Mu Lan was an alpha. And in the original novel, same-gender alpha-alpha relationships weren’t legally recognized for marriage.
“I want to choose omega.” As expected, Jiang Nian made her decision.
The doctor shook his head. He had no solutions for young couples blinded by love. All he could do was sigh and prescribe the treatment.
“Around ten minutes of hugging each day should be enough. Don’t do anything too intense like marking. Just take your medication regularly and you’ll get through the differentiation phase smoothly.”
Just don’t come back crying about relationship problems later, he thought.
“So our daily recharge time needs to be ten minutes now?” Gu Li teased, blinking at Jiang Nian.
Her tone was casual, but the implication was obvious. In front of the doctor, this one sentence confirmed their couple status.
Recharge time? What kind of best friends called it that? Young people these days had no idea what was coming. Why did a single, aging alpha like him have to deal with their hormonal drama? Let her differentiate into omega. Whatever.
“Now let’s go help you with your favor?” Jiang Nian lifted the test report in her hand and nodded toward the lab across the hall. Usually, bl00d donations were done there.
But Gu Li tugged her gently and led her upstairs instead.
The Gu family’s hospital had built a private lab for Specialist Ji. It was filled with medical research equipment and documents, mostly used for studying Gu Li’s condition. Since it wasn’t yet his off-hours, he was likely still there working.
“He keeps proper bl00d bags. Let’s go to him.” Gu Li stopped in front of the door and knocked.
“Come in,” Specialist Ji called from inside.
“Uncle Ji, this is the classmate I told you about. Her bl00d helps with my condition.” Gu Li had spent more time talking to Specialist Ji than she had with her own cousin Gu Wei since arriving in this world, so they had grown familiar. Her tone was warm and casual now. He was also the father of Ji Bai, the famous lawyer.
“Hello, Uncle Ji,” Jiang Nian greeted politely, following Gu Li’s lead.
After a brief round of greetings, Specialist Ji brought out a set of tools and motioned for Jiang Nian to sit down. He asked Gu Li to wait outside, just in case anything went wrong during the process.
The bl00d draw was quick. It didn’t take long to fill the bag. Gu Li crouched at the door the whole time, peeking in nervously to keep an eye on Jiang Nian.
When it was over, Specialist Ji removed the needle and applied a bandage, then sealed the bl00d bag and stored it in a freezer.
“Nian Nian, are you okay? Do you feel dizzy?” Gu Li called loudly from the doorway.
Jiang Nian walked over to open the door and laughed. “Why are you standing so far away?”
“The smell of bl00d isn’t that strong. It’s within my tolerance,” Gu Li said as she gently took Jiang Nian’s arm and pressed on the bandage for her.
“I was worried. After biting you last time, I didn’t want anything like that to happen again.”
“Now that we have this, you won’t be in pain in the coming days,” Specialist Ji added helpfully from inside the room.
His words made Jiang Nian frown slightly.
“You’re still in pain when your condition flares up? Is this amount enough? I don’t feel dizzy at all.” She made a move to peel off the bandage and offer more, but Gu Li stopped her.
“It’s enough, really. Don’t spoil me too much, Jiang Nian.”
Just ten milliliters was enough to ease the pain. Anything more would only feed her craving.
Super sweet novel one of my favourites, I highly recommend.
