- Chapter 12 - I Really Want Bubble Tea
“You’re taking tomorrow off, right?” Jiang Nian pressed her face against Gu Li’s collarbone. Her warm breath landed softly near Gu Li’s heart as she spoke.
Their daily ten-minute “recharge time” was once again taking place in the back seat of the car.
Gu Li wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but she kept feeling like Jiang Nian’s hands behind her were lightly tracing something against her back. Gu Li stayed focused on playing the role of the cuddly bear. Her best friend was getting more comfortable by the day. What started as cheek-to-cheek hugs had shifted to cheek-to-neck. Now, it felt even closer than before.
“Yes. The hormone levels showed my susceptibility period should start tomorrow or the day after.” Gu Li gently patted Jiang Nian’s back, signaling that their time was about up.
The little kitten slowly crawled out of her arms and sat back in her seat like a well-behaved child.
“What about our contact over the next few days?” Jiang Nian asked.
Gu Li looked at her and saw the worried expression, as if she was afraid that a few days without hugs would ruin her chances of differentiating into an omega. Gu Li took off the jade Buddha pendant from around her neck. When she placed it on Jiang Nian, the girl looked stunned.
“Let this keep you company. I’ve worn it for a long time, so it carries my scent.” Gu Li secured the red string and gently tucked the pendant inside Jiang Nian’s shirt. She rubbed the smooth jade once before letting it go.
“This is something really special, isn’t it?”
Jade pendants weren’t gifts to be handed out so easily. This one looked like it had been worn for years. It was crystal-clear and delicate, clearly something that had meaning.
“I’m just lending it to you. When I return to school, you can give it back. Then we can go back to using the original version of me as your personal hug partner.”
Gu Li had started calling her “Nian Nian” more and more naturally. It was such a sweet name, soft and gentle, and suited her best friend perfectly. She liked saying it aloud. It felt warm and familiar, just like Jiang Nian herself.
Though she had to admit, it was a bit frustrating that this soft little kitten would probably end up with someone like Mu Lan.
To be fair, Mu Lan looked good, painted well, came from a wealthy family, and didn’t have that greasy, arrogant vibe often seen in stereotypical male characters.
The more she thought about it, the more she realized he wasn’t that bad.
Gu Li quickly pulled her thoughts back on track. She reminded herself that Mu Lan was still terrible at studying, which supported her earlier impression that he was a bit clueless.
She sighed to herself. Jiang Nian liked him. They were the main couple of the story. It was a fitting match.
What she didn’t know was that all of her actions were being carefully observed by the driver.
He had been watching his young miss for a long time. First, she started driving this classmate home every day. Then came the hospital visits. After that, he watched them cuddle affectionately in the car. And now she had given the girl a keepsake.
From his front-row seat, he had pieced together the timeline of their romance.
It was time to report this joyful news to the madam. After dropping Gu Li off at the door, the driver smiled to himself and confidently made the call.
“Hello, Madam?”
That evening, Gu Li didn’t eat dinner alone. The butler was bringing dishes to both her and Gu Wei.
After Gu Wei gave her a fourth suspicious glance, Gu Li finally gave in and asked, “Is something wrong?”
She set down her fork and looked puzzled.
“Sweetheart, are you dating someone?” Gu Wei asked calmly as she accepted a plate from the butler.
Gu Li had just taken a sip of water and nearly choked. She swallowed with difficulty.
“No. Of course not. Who told you that?”
Gu Wei narrowed her eyes and smiled. “At first, I didn’t believe it either. But then I noticed you gave away the family heirloom. That girl’s bl00d attracts you, and clearly, so does she.”
Family heirloom?
Gu Li froze.
She reached up to touch her now-empty neck and tried to remember the original story. In the novel, the villainous vampire didn’t have detailed plot lines like this. How was she supposed to know the jade Buddha was a family heirloom? She really thought it was something picked up on a tourist trip to Y City, just a nice souvenir that happened to carry her pheromone scent after being worn for a long time.
“No, it’s not like that. Jiang Nian is about to differentiate, and she needs my pheromones to help. I’m about to enter my susceptibility period and can’t be near her, so I gave her the… the heirloom… just for a few days.”
Even as she said it, Gu Li knew it sounded ridiculous.
Gu Wei continued smiling, waiting patiently for her to finish.
“It’s just a pure and simple friendship between girls,” Gu Li insisted, trying her best to steer the topic away from the pendant. She didn’t dare elaborate on the heirloom, afraid it might reveal she wasn’t the original Gu Li.
“Alright. So your susceptibility period starts soon. I already picked up your medication and bl00d bags from Specialist Ji. They’re in the isolation room. Are you staying there tonight?”
Gu Wei didn’t press further. She understood how shy young people could be about new relationships, and she felt guilty for missing so much lately. Even hearing about this from the driver made her realize she hadn’t been paying enough attention to her daughter. Now, she wanted to be more considerate in other ways.
“Yes, tonight,” Gu Li said with relief. She felt the tension ease now that the subject had shifted. Then she asked casually, “Where did you hear I was in a relationship?”
“Driver Wang told me. He even gave me a full timeline. It’s saved on my phone,” Gu Wei replied, nearly laughing.
The summary was thorough and convincing. Clearly, their driver had hidden talents. He had laid everything out logically and backed it with detailed notes.
Perfect. Uncle Wang, you’re officially on my watch list.
Gu Li looked at the phone Gu Wei handed her. The first thing she saw was a bold red title, written in thick marker:
The Sweet Romance Between a Rich Girl and Her Adorable Classmate
Meanwhile, Jiang Nian had finished her homework and was lying on her side, holding the jade Buddha in her palm. It was made of white jade, smooth and warm to the touch. She had wrapped it gently in her hand, and it still carried Gu Li’s soft lavender scent.
After staring at it for a while, she picked up her phone and sent a message.
Jiang Nian: My period started.
Gu Li replied immediately.
Gu Li: That lines up with my susceptibility period. Looks like we won’t need to avoid each other this time. Laughing emoji.
Of course. They were always together. It made sense that even their cycles would start to sync. Jiang Nian wondered if her future heat cycles might align with Gu Li’s susceptibility period too.
The thought made her face flush with heat.
She first realized her feelings in the hospital, during one of their hugs. There had been a strange sense of possessiveness that took root, and it only grew stronger with each passing day.
Gu Li was kind, intelligent, beautiful, and never once looked down on her family background.
But none of that was what mattered most.
What mattered was that she had the chance to become an omega. She was highly compatible with Gu Li. That realization stirred something deeper inside her.
She wanted to make Gu Li her own.
She was happily chatting with Gu Li on WeChat when the familiar scent on her neck started to make her skin itch. The faint lavender aroma that lingered on Gu Li’s jade pendant was warm and persistent. Jiang Nian lifted the back of her hand where Gu Li had bitten her once before. There was still a faint mark from the bite.
Jiang Nian: If you have my bl00d, will your susceptibility period stop hurting?
Gu Li stared at the message for a long moment without replying. She wasn’t sure herself. Right now, she was sitting in her family’s isolation room. Inside the freezer were bags of Jiang Nian’s bl00d, and on her nightstand were the medications prescribed by Specialist Ji.
Until she experienced it for herself, she couldn’t be certain if Jiang Nian’s bl00d would truly take away the pain. But at least in the book, that was how it worked. Jiang Nian’s bl00d was the only medicine that could help a vampire.
The hormone predictions were accurate. At two in the morning, Gu Li entered her second susceptibility period since arriving in this world.
The pain began in her legs and slowly spread to her lower back, then climbed up to her head. The agony made her gasp for air. Trembling, she dragged herself to the freezer and pulled out a bl00d bag.
She didn’t even have the strength or patience to tear it open with her hands. She used her teeth to bite into the packaging. The cold liquid, with a faint flavor of milk tea, slid down her throat and spread through her body.
Because of the susceptibility period, her senses were heightened. She could taste the exact sweetness and balance of the bl00d. It was, without exaggeration, the best milk tea she had ever tasted—even better than anything from her past life.
After just one sip, the pain began to fade. She held the bl00d bag in both hands and shrank into herself with joy, whispering in awe, “This tastes amazing.”
Unlike last time, when she had been barely conscious and lost in her vampire instincts, this time she was fully aware. The pain had been dulled by medication, and she hadn’t lost control. As the wave of relief washed over her, she glanced at the bag in her hands.
One sip, and nearly half the bag was gone.
Her susceptibility period would last several more days. Based on past experience, the intense pain would return at least once a day. Ten milliliters divided by multiple days meant she could only afford one sip per day.
Gu Li forced herself to stop. She grabbed a sealing clip and clamped the bag shut. With a pitiful expression, she put the bag back into the freezer.
Then she walked back to her bed, turning around every few steps to look at the bl00d bag, giving herself silent pep talks.
Save it. Save it. You’ll need it later. Don’t trade tomorrow’s sanity for tonight’s moment of happiness.
She whimpered to herself. She wanted to drink more. The less she allowed herself to have it, the more unforgettable that single sip became.
She set a timer and forced herself to sleep, hoping she could dream about drinking as much of that perfect milk-tea-flavored bl00d as she wanted.
Her susceptibility period lasted four full days.
At the very last moment, when it finally ended, Gu Li didn’t hold back anymore. She finished the rest of the bl00d in one go.
Empty milk tea cups were scattered around her bed. During those four days, she had ordered countless cups from different places because she couldn’t stop craving that flavor.
But nothing tasted right.
Most of them she drank one sip of and then tossed aside. She even gave feedback to the butler.
“This one’s too sweet. This one has too much tea. Can this one smell stronger?”
Eventually, she decided it wasn’t the drinks that were the problem but the butler’s overly refined taste. She asked him to stop and switched to ordering takeout.
She tried every original pearl milk tea from every brand she could find. To match the summer vibe and mimic the flavor of “Nian Nian Milk Tea,” she ordered them all with extra ice.
Not a single one was good.
Now, sitting on the bed in the isolation room, she licked her lips after finishing the last drop of Jiang Nian’s bl00d and whispered to herself,
“I really want bubble tea.”
Super sweet novel one of my favourites, I highly recommend.
