- Chapter 13 - Sports Meeting
“The indicators look good. Your body is steadily improving.” Specialist Ji took the newly released report and pointed at several metrics. “The pain can be suppressed, and with medication, we can gradually restore your body to normal levels.”
Gu Li nodded, then cautiously asked, “I can feel it, but there seems to be a side effect.”
“Oh?”
“I think Jiang Nian’s bl00d tastes like milk tea. After drinking it, I really crave milk tea.” She earnestly handed Specialist Ji the empty bl00d bag that had contained Jiang Nian’s bl00d. “Take a sniff. Even though I drank it all, you can still smell it.”
Specialist Ji reluctantly took the thoroughly licked-clean bag and, under Gu Li’s expectant gaze, wrinkled his nose and sniffed.
“Just the smell of bl00d.”
He made his conclusion and handed the bag back. “I thought your sense of smell wasn’t very sharp. How can you detect such a faint scent?”
Faint? It was overwhelmingly strong to her, making her mouth water even now. Could she be the only one who could smell it?
“What should I do? I’ve been dreaming about milk tea these past few days.” She pinched the small roll of fat on her waist, a result of sampling various milk teas.
“Gu Li, it’s just a milk tea side effect. Our primary goal is to save your life and manage the pain, right?” Specialist Ji adjusted his glasses. “Just drink a few more cups to satisfy the craving. It’s possible your subconscious associates Jiang Nian with something you like, so her bl00d tastes like milk tea to you.”
But I wasn’t particularly fond of milk tea before well, that’s not entirely true. I did enjoy Yi Dian Dian’s Four Seasons Milk Green, and Hey Tea occasionally had some tasty new releases. Before I got sick, I’d always grab a cup with my roommates when we went out.
Gu Li swallowed her words, bid Specialist Ji goodbye, and prepared to return to school for class.
“The sports meet is coming up soon! Anyone interested in signing up, come see me!” During the break, the class sports rep stood at the podium, waving a sign-up sheet.
Traditionally, alphas represented the class in competitions, but to encourage more participation, new events exclusively for betas or omegas had been added. This gave undifferentiated betas a chance to earn honors for the class and allowed physically weaker omegas to showcase their abilities.
The sports rep filled all the alpha events within ten minutes, then, following the teacher’s guidelines, began persuading omegas to join flexibility-based events like the seated forward bend. He also approached a few beta classmates, asking if they’d be interested in long-distance running, sprints, or javelin.
In previous years, Jiang Nian would have been overlooked during such class activities. But today, after finishing with the student in front of her, the sports rep naturally placed the sign-up sheet on Jiang Nian’s desk.
“Interested in joining, Jiang Nian?” The sports rep was an undifferentiated beta himself, with a dark complexion. Despite the cooling weather, he still wore his summer uniform, revealing well-toned arms from regular exercise.
Jiang Nian was working on the math problems Gu Li had left for her before taking leave when she heard someone call her name. She looked up awkwardly.
“Me?” She pointed at herself and turned to the class sports committee member.
Though her situation had improved significantly, apart from Mu Lan and Gu Li, hardly any classmates initiated conversations with her, so she found this rather unusual.
“That’s right. We’re still short of female beta participants for the competition. Last year, our class missed being grade champions by just a few points. This time, we must beat the neighboring class.” He checked off some vacant spots on the event list with his pen. “See if there’s anything you can participate in. Let’s win honors for our class together.”
Finally being treated as part of the group, Jiang Nian took the registration form.
200m, 800m, 3000m.
Her endurance wasn’t great, so long-distance running was probably not the best choice.
Mu Lan peeked over and pointed at the 200m option. “You should do this one. You’re so slim—long-distance would probably be too much for you.”
Jiang Nian nodded in agreement and filled in her name for the 200m event as he suggested.
“Perfect! I’ve signed up for the sports meet too, 200m and 3000m. We can train together on the field these days.” He proudly pointed at his name under the alpha 200m and 3000m categories on the form and grinned at Jiang Nian.
Gu Li, who had just entered through the back door, witnessed this scene.
“Mom, look—Nian Nian really isn’t dating me. She’s participating in the sports meet with the male lead from the novel the sporty, sunny guy who shares her passion for art. They’re even going to train together on the field after school today.”
The sports committee member happily collected the registration forms and went off to find his next target when he spotted Gu Li. “Gu, any sports you’re good at?”
Just as Jiang Nian was about to decline Mu Lan’s invitation to train together, her eyes lit up upon seeing Gu Li standing outside the classroom door with his backpack.
“You’re back.” Her words sounded like a wife greeting her husband returning from work, yet no one found it odd.
“Yeah, my rut’s over.” Gu Li was still wearing a mask, concerned that Jiang Nian’s heat might not have ended yet, and he was still in his milk tea craving phase.
But Jiang Nian didn’t overthink it at all, she immediately threw herself into his arms.
“Nian Nian?”
“My heat’s over, but I haven’t gotten my daily recharge yet.” Her excuse was clearly a playful one, the jade Buddha pendant Gu Li had given her still hung around her neck, making the “contact” pretext completely unconvincing.
Yet as he held her close, Gu Li inexplicably felt the jealousy he’d experienced watching Mu Lan and Jiang Nian’s closeness earlier begin to fade.
Even if Nian Nian really did start dating someone, she’d still be his best friend, right?
He felt guilty for that momentary jealousy, how could he let his possessive friendship interfere with Jiang Nian’s romantic life?
The sports committee member stared blankly at the scene, exchanging a glance with Mu Lan that silently asked, “What’s going on here?”
The look he got in return was meaningful.
Don’t ask. If you must know they’re dating. Do not disturb.
In the end, Jiang Nian still went to train on the field with Mu Lan. Having signed up, she couldn’t let the team down. The 200m required both explosive power and endurance in some ways, it was even more demanding than the 800m or 3000m.
Gu Li was pulled along by her to act as their referee at the starting line.
“You should stretch first, or you might get injured,” Gu Li said with the experience of an elder sister as she took their jackets.
After ten full minutes of warm-up exercises leg stretches, ankle rotations, and Gu Li helping them touch their toes by pressing on their backs, she finally felt comfortable letting them run.
The male alpha and female beta each took their positions on the track. At Gu Li’s signal, they dashed forward.
The gap between them became apparent almost immediately. Mu Lan left Jiang Nian far behind, reaching the finish line while Jiang Nian had only covered three-fifths of the distance. Gu Li pressed the timer on her phone twice, recording both their results.
“Mu Lan, 26.7 seconds. Nian Nian, 40 seconds,” Gu Li announced, cutting straight across the field to show them the numbers.
Mu Lan didn’t need any practice for the 200m, his time was easily competitive. Jiang Nian, however, was different. Even by the standards of her past life’s physical tests, this result wouldn’t have passed among the girls.
Sweat beaded on the girl’s forehead and neck, her chest heaving as she struggled to recover from the exertion.
“I… can’t run,” Jiang Nian poked at the “40s” on the screen. She had given it her all, but watching Mu Lan pull further and further ahead had drained her spirit.
“It’s fine! We still have half a month. If we train every day, you’ll definitely improve,” Mu Lan said, bouncing lightly. Sensing the odd tension between them, he quickly added, “I’ve got my own 3000m to worry about, I’ll go run a few laps. You two figure out the training plan.”
With that, he took off from the same starting line.
Gu Li walked over to Jiang Nian and gently patted her shoulder. “Can you handle this? If not, we can talk to the sports committee and have someone else take your place.”
Jiang Nian shook her head, meeting her gaze firmly. “I want to contribute to our class’s honor with everyone else.”
Her voice was soft but resolute.
Gu Li squeezed her hand and, almost without thinking, nodded. “Then let me be your… not-so-professional coach?”
The phrasing made them both laugh.
“Okay.”
After catching her breath, Jiang Nian carefully removed the jade Buddha pendant from her neck, wiped off the sweat, and placed it around Gu Li’s neck.
“Please teach me well, Coach Gu.”
Despite calling herself “not-so-professional,” Gu Li threw herself into the role. The Gu family had investments in various industries, and she even consulted professional trainers, eventually arranging a tailored training plan for Jiang Nian. Time was meticulously divided studying with focus, training with dedication.
On the eve of the sports festival, Jiang Nian stood at the starting line and said to Gu Li, who was holding a whistle nearby, “Can you stand at the finish line?”
“Huh?”
“Can you?”
In the end, Gu Li jogged over to the 200m finish line, leaving the starting duties to Mu Lan. She stood there foolishly, waiting as Jiang Nian sprinted toward her at the sound of the whistle.
The figure before him grew clearer by the moment. Swinging her arms with eyes locked on him, she dashed forward like an arrow. Gu Li took a few steps back, bracing himself in case Jiang Nian couldn’t stop in time and crashed into him.
To his surprise, the moment she reached the finish line, she spread her arms wide and threw herself straight into his embrace.
“34 seconds! 34 seconds!” Mu Lan rushed over excitedly to announce the good news.
It wasn’t an outstanding time, but it was definitely enough to place in the rankings.
Gu Li smiled warmly at Jiang Nian, who was nestled in his arms. “You were amazing.”
The little kitten, drenched in sweat, lifted her head and spoke in a soft, milky voice, “When it’s the sports meet, will you wait for me at the finish line too?”
“Is there any special reason?” Gu Li chuckled.
Jiang Nian didn’t answer aloud, but in her heart, she silently replied because if Gu Li was standing there, she wouldn’t want to wait even a second before rushing straight into his arms.
