- Chapter 5 - Taking Action
“Can you run?”
Her tongue still tingled with a sharp sting, her mind torn between instinct and reason.
Jiang Nian stood in front of her, trembling. That voice snapped her out of her daze.
“Run.”
Gu Li took a half-step back, gripping the edge of the sink behind her. Her voice was low and hoarse as she called out.
It was as if strength had suddenly filled her legs. Jiang Nian turned around, yanked the bathroom door open, and bolted outside.
Left behind, Gu Li stood still. As the lingering scent in the air gradually faded, a strange sadness settled in her chest. Her hand, which had been tightly gripping the sink, finally relaxed. The excitement in her flushed eyes cooled slowly. She leaned against the sink, her body slowly sliding down as if all energy had drained from her.
Just like when she had been chased by that boy earlier, her knees were throbbing in pain. Still, she did not dare to stop until she reached the far end of the sports field. Only then did Jiang Nian halt. Her legs were aching and weak. On the back of her right hand were two deep bite marks, embedded in her flesh. Strangely, there was no bl00d.
Her hand felt numb. She could barely form a fist.
Why had Gu Li done that to her?
At School B, the staff had made a major effort to support the newly promoted junior and senior students. They invited professional speakers every Tuesday afternoon to give career guidance talks in the school auditorium.
There was an unexpected bonus. A well-known lawyer from City B had volunteered to be one of the keynote speakers. She had personally reached out to offer her participation.
The school gladly accepted. Meeting outstanding professionals could help students find suitable goals and begin planning for their future careers early.
“Is it really that famous lawyer, Ji Bai?”
Some students in Class 3 had heard of her and whispered among themselves.
Gu Li walked silently at the back of the group, while Jiang Nian stayed far ahead.
All the lights in the auditorium were on. A capable woman in a black professional suit stood on stage, smiling as she spoke with the school administrators.
Gu Li sat in her class’s designated area and deliberately met the woman’s gaze.
“Hello, students. My name is Ji Bai. I am a lawyer, and I am honored to share my views on this profession with you today.”
Ji Bai sat calmly on stage, speaking with ease and confidence.
As the presentation neared its end, the school staff left time for students to ask questions.
“You said lawyers deal with clients of all kinds. Have you ever worked with someone our age?”
A sudden voice rang out in the auditorium.
The school administrators looked uneasy, trying to identify who had spoken, but they couldn’t.
Ji Bai remained calm. She tapped the microphone gently and answered slowly.
“Yes. Just because someone is underage does not mean they are never involved in legal matters. Among the most common cases involving minors are those related to school bullying. Youth does not excuse everything. Every act of harm leaves a scar, both on the body and the mind. Those who claim to be doing the right thing while causing pain are not heroes. They are abusers.”
She paused for a moment and continued.
“Verbal abuse is just as serious as physical violence. If you witness these things happening around you, please don’t look away. No one knows who might be next.”
She went on to describe a few real-life cases, focusing on the punishments the abusers received and the pain their victims endured. After she finished, a few quiet whispers could be heard in the audience, but no one else spoke up.
“Lastly, let me say something from the heart. I am not speaking as a lawyer now, but as someone more than ten years older than you. Not everything you hear is true. If you judge things too quickly or hold onto your biases, you may miss the truth. Communication, understanding, and real experiences help you see the full picture. Of course, that includes my words too. Don’t believe them blindly either.”
She added the last part playfully, easing the tension in the room.
Outside the auditorium, Ji Bai looked at the girl in front of her and smiled.
“Miss Gu, the setup you planned was a little awkward. I had to talk quite a bit more to keep it going. There was no lead-up to the ending, and I nearly embarrassed myself.”
Gu Li remained calm.
“A sudden interruption makes the school staff believe the trouble came from one of their students. Also, your skills are impressive. Please don’t underestimate yourself.”
“I had my reasons for helping you,” Ji Bai said with a smile. She glanced at the slip of paper in her hand and gave Gu Li a carefree wave.
The male lead of the original story was not supposed to appear until the next semester. By now, Jiang Nian should have been in the hospital after being attacked by some thugs. But Gu Li had saved her. That meant the next few months would bring new dangers.
Gu Li did not want to protect Jiang Nian blindly like the male lead, ignoring what others thought. She wanted to eliminate this kind of prejudice and mistreatment from the root. It had to start with thoughts and be followed by actions.
She touched the button in her pocket. If today’s incident had not happened, she would have given it to Jiang Nian already. Now she would need to find another way.
Teenagers are easily influenced. Even though Ji Bai added a playful remark at the end of her speech, many students had begun to reflect on their actions.
Jiang Nian’s situation in class had improved. For one, her homework had been collected and turned in properly, instead of being thrown on the floor or into the trash.
It had been a long time since she had seen a check mark and a positive comment from the teacher on her workbook. The sight left her feeling dazed.
For days, Gu Li had been secretly sniffing around the classroom, trying to sense if Jiang Nian’s scent from her menstrual cycle had faded. On the second Monday, she finally removed her mask and noticed the scent was gone.
Just to be safe, she kept wearing the mask. When the final bell rang, she followed Jiang Nian out of the classroom.
The memory of biting Jiang Nian a few days earlier still haunted her. After mentally preparing herself, she quickly caught up and called out.
“Jiang Nian.”
The familiar voice made Jiang Nian turn her head. When she saw Gu Li wearing a mask, her instinct was to run away.
“I’m sorry for what happened the other day.”
Gu Li bowed deeply while speaking. She bent too fast and almost hurt her back. Her clumsy movement looked a little funny.
Jiang Nian stood frozen, unsure of what to say. Then, flustered, she mumbled softly.
“It’s okay.”
Gu Li forced herself to stand straight, her eyes full of guilt. She gently reached out and held Jiang Nian’s right hand. The bite marks were still very clear. She had bitten hard that day, and it might leave a scar.
Jiang Nian instinctively pulled her hand back, afraid that the person in front of her might bite again at any moment.
But then she felt warmth on the back of her hand. Gu Li’s fingertips brushed lightly over the wound, causing a slight sting. Somehow, Gu Li had produced a tube of ointment, and she gently squeezed some out, carefully rubbing it into her skin.
It tickled a little. It felt strange.
That was all Jiang Nian could think.
“I really am sorry.” Gu Li cautiously stepped a bit closer and apologized again. Jiang Nian had forgiven her so easily, and that only deepened her guilt.
After some awkward back-and-forth, the two of them walked home together. One tried hard to keep a safe distance to avoid startling the other, while the other walked quietly, savoring the rare peace of a normal walk after school.
The group of thugs often waited for Jiang Nian on Mondays. They were idle, skipping classes and always looking for easy ways to get pocket money. Jiang Nian was the perfect target. Bullying her made them feel righteous while also giving them a chance to vent their anger.
What made her even more appealing as a target was the rumor that her family owned a small shop. From there, they could steal a few suppressants and resell them for enough cash to enjoy a few hours at an internet café.
Gu Li never believed that a single speech could solve everything. Some people needed to be handled with kindness. Others had to be dealt with swiftly and decisively. She would not fight violence with violence, but she would make sure they never dared to act again.
The button camera she had originally planned to give Jiang Nian was now pinned to her own clothing. The thugs’ faces were clearly recorded. Every foul word they shouted was directed not just at Jiang Nian, but also at Gu Li.
Their fists came swinging, their feet kicked forward, and Gu Li stepped protectively in front of Jiang Nian.
“You’re pretty tough. Judging by your clothes, you’ve got more money than Jiang Nian. Pay us on her behalf, and we’ll let you go.”
The leader of the group was arrogant, acting as if he owned the world.
He had no idea the camera was capturing everything.
“Gu Li, stop worrying about me. Just run.”
Jiang Nian cried out from behind her, her voice shaking.
But Gu Li wasn’t really injured. She had dodged the serious blows, and she was wearing protective gear under her clothes. More importantly, she had already called the police.
When Ji Bai received the injury report and the video footage from her, she looked up in surprise.
“Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Gu Li replied calmly. The only damage was caused by her strange condition, but that could be used to make sure the punishment for these people would be severe enough. Her face was pale, with a faint bruise on her cheek, but she smiled as she turned to Ji Bai.
“Include the harm Jiang Nian has suffered in the past. They should be held accountable for all of it. I paid you a lawyer’s fee, Ji Bai, so make it worth it.”
The thugs, who once thought they would live their lives acting like kings without consequence, were met with the full force of the law. The news reports were subtly guided in a way that made the public aware of what had happened.
The students at School B now had the words from Ji Bai’s earlier lecture etched even deeper into their minds, reinforced by what had actually happened right around them.
Under pressure from public opinion and with a gentle push from the Gu family’s legal team, the school added free legal education classes for its students.
