- Chapter 5 - Don’t Be a Picky Eater
“We should take this opportunity to have Dr. Ji run a thorough checkup, alright?”
Gu Wei spoke gently to Gu Li. She had just finished dealing with company matters and a lawsuit before rushing over. Her business suit was still on, unchanged.
After falling ill, her daughter had dropped out of school and become gloomy and withdrawn. She had finally pulled herself together to transfer to another school, only to experience school bullying again. Although part of it had been instigated intentionally, it was still enough to trigger a mother’s fierce protectiveness.
“Alright.”
Gu Li nodded obediently. Gu Wei had a soft and elegant appearance, but because of her demanding job, she had not taken good care of her daughter. Before Gu Li became ill, most of Gu Wei’s energy had gone toward worrying about her husband—the unfortunate vampire who had suffered from the same rare disease as Gu Li.
It almost felt like fate. That cursed vampire’s father had died from this illness, and now his daughter was suffering from it as well.
Her husband had left her, and now her daughter was given the same death sentence.
Only when Gu Wei finally turned her attention back to her daughter did she realize how much she had neglected and failed her over the years.
After witnessing her father’s tragic end and enduring the same pain herself, the original Gu Li’s personality had changed drastically. Her mood had become unstable and unpredictable. When the current Gu Li took over her body, the subtle differences in behavior went unnoticed because of that instability.
In the original novel, Gu Wei was only mentioned briefly. But now that the current Gu Li had become a vampire, she also had inherited those memories. The resentment toward her mother’s years of neglect and the ache from seeing her struggle alone came from this body. And when Gu Li looked into Gu Wei’s expression now, she saw her own mother from her past life.
Letting her own mother bury her child had left her with a heartbreak that still felt unbearable every time she thought about it.
Health was so precious. She used to have so many dreams, but during the last few years of her life, she had only ever wished for one thing.
To live safely and healthily.
Jiang Nian was also sent for a full physical exam, arranged by Gu Li. She still felt guilty for biting her and drinking so much of her bl00d. On top of that, Jiang Nian had been through a great deal of trauma, and her physical condition was concerning.
After undergoing a series of tests with Gu Wei, Gu Li received a new report showing that her health had improved. Jiang Nian’s bl00d was, without a doubt, the best medicine for her.
“The bl00d bank just received a sample that matches yours. But I think you already knew that.”
Dr. Ji closed her pen and smiled as she pushed up her glasses.
This line marked the beginning of a turning point in the original novel—when the vampire started taking Jiang Nian’s bl00d regularly.
According to the book:
When the vampire learned that matching bl00d existed, it was like she had found a lifeline. She acted with urgency, forcing her way into Jiang Nian’s life and coercing her into becoming her personal bl00d source.
Jiang Nian was her lifeline too. But Gu Li didn’t want to become that kind of monster. She was thinking of something else. The novel had mentioned many times that vampires did not need large quantities of bl00d for the symptoms to improve. The original Gu Li’s excessive demand had stemmed from both the innate greed of a vampire and the fear caused by witnessing her father’s painful death.
So how much bl00d did she really need to ease the illness?
Dr. Ji used the bl00d sample taken from Jiang Nian during her exam and ran a comparison test with Gu Li’s. She shared the result.
“For now, ten milliliters should be enough each time. That amount may decrease over time. We’ll continue monitoring both of your physical conditions and adjust the data accordingly.”
“Understood. Thank you, doctor.”
Gu Wei had arranged for Jiang Nian and Gu Li to share a high-end hospital room. Although Gu Li had asked her not to mention the need for Jiang Nian’s bl00d, Gu Wei still instinctively wanted to build a good relationship with the girl. After all, she was the key to treating her daughter.
Busy as always, President Gu didn’t have time to return to the room with them. One phone call was enough to pull her away. Now that they had a promising treatment and her daughter understood the demands of her work, Gu Wei left the hospital in a rush.
When Gu Li entered the room, Jiang Nian was lying back on the hospital bed, receiving an IV drip. She looked too thin, showing signs of both malnutrition and anemia.
Outside, the summer air was humid and stifling. Inside the two-person room, the air conditioner had cooled things down. The light chill in the room felt refreshing. Jiang Nian leaned quietly against the pillow, her eyelids drooping. She was about to fall asleep, and by the time Gu Li had closed the door, she was already sound asleep.
A nurse delivering the evening meals entered the room quietly. Seeing Gu Li pouring water nearby, the nurse smiled and handed her two trays of specially prepared hospital meals, then left the room without a word. These meals had been ordered by Gu Wei, who insisted on combining proper nutrition with medical treatment.
Gu Li carried the trays to Jiang Nian’s bedside. She set them on the nightstand, then carefully lifted the small tray table attached to the hospital bed and secured it in place.
Each meal tray had a name label.
She arranged Jiang Nian’s tray on the table. Jiang Nian remained fast asleep. Gu Li glanced at the IV drip. It was still mostly full and would take a while to finish. Her hand showed no sign of bl00d returning either. Only then did Gu Li return to her own seat and start eating.
Opening her tray, the familiar side dishes came into view. Organ meats, eggs, malt, soybeans, kelp, tomatoes, spinach—ingredients she had seen countless times before. Everything else was fine, but the organ meats turned her stomach. In her previous life, after being diagnosed with a bl00d disorder, she had eaten them every day. Now, just looking at them made her feel nauseous.
She deliberately moved her chopsticks away from the organ meats and picked up some of the other vegetables. Paired with rice, she had a comfortable dinner.
She didn’t want to waste food, but she truly couldn’t stomach the organ meats.
“Are you a picky eater, Gu Li?”
Jiang Nian had woken up at some point. Just as Gu Li was about to close the tray and pretend the organ meats didn’t exist, she spoke up.
Gu Li froze. She felt like a child caught red-handed by her mother, trying to throw away vegetables she didn’t want to eat. The amount of organ meat wasn’t much, and each portion of food had been carefully prepared in small servings, just enough to be filling without being too much.
“You’re awake. Eat up. I put your food right in front of you.”
Gu Li quickly changed the subject and pointed to the tray on the table in front of Jiang Nian.
Jiang Nian looked away and sat up. She leaned forward and opened her own tray. Thanks to the insulated container, the food inside was still warm.
Jiang Nian was left-handed, but the nurse hadn’t realized that. When placing the IV, she naturally assumed Jiang Nian was right-handed and inserted the needle into her left hand. As a result, Jiang Nian was now forced to use her less coordinated right hand to hold her chopsticks. No matter how many times she tried, she couldn’t manage to pick up any food. After struggling for a while, she finally gave in and picked up the chopsticks with her left hand again.
The moment the food entered her mouth, the IV in the back of her hand started to backflow.
Gu Li got out of bed and walked over. She picked up a spoon nearby and handed it to her, motioning for her to use it with her right hand. Whether Jiang Nian was doing it on purpose or not, she still couldn’t manage to scoop up any food. Embarrassed, she looked up and said, “My right hand is really clumsy.”
Jiang Nian’s menstrual period had passed, and Gu Li’s susceptibility period had ended more than a week ago. She looked at the backflowing IV line and didn’t smell anything that triggered her urges. There was no danger of losing control or feeling the desire to bite. So she calmly took the chopsticks from Jiang Nian’s left hand and gently placed her hand to the side, adjusting her position so the bl00d would stop flowing back.
Then she began to use the chopsticks to serve food onto the spoon. A bite of vegetables, then a bite of rice. She did it carefully, as if she were handling something very important.
Jiang Nian watched quietly. Gu Li’s actions felt like those of someone caring for a child. Jiang Nian had initially planned to stop her, but seeing how serious she looked while helping, she stayed silent. She obediently accepted each bite and fed herself.
“You’re not that clumsy. You still managed to get everything into your mouth just fine,” Gu Li said with a smile after she finished the last bite.
Jiang Nian glanced at the food tray near Gu Li’s bed and said, “What about yours?”
She remembered Gu Li hadn’t finished the portion with the organ meats.
Gu Li saw her looking and sighed. With no way to avoid it, she brought the tray over, picked up her chopsticks, and began to eat the organ meats all at once. As she chewed, she mumbled, “I’m eating them now. Nothing is going to waste.”
To her surprise, Jiang Nian reached out with her spoon, signaling for Gu Li to put the organ meats on it. Then she ate them herself. After setting the spoon down, her cheeks turned slightly red. She was still chewing when she said softly, “We shouldn’t waste food, but we also shouldn’t force someone to eat something they don’t like.”
She didn’t want to waste food, but she also didn’t want Gu Li to be uncomfortable. So she chose to eat it herself.
A bit of oil still clung to her lips, glistening slightly under the hospital lights. Gu Li reached into her pocket and pulled out a tissue, gently wiping her mouth.
“Thank you for what you did today, Gu Li. Can we be friends now?”
Jiang Nian looked at her with shining brown eyes. Her voice trembled slightly with nervousness.
Gu Li hadn’t rejected her today. In fact, she had even protected her in front of others. That meant she didn’t dislike her, right?
But there was something about her that was still intimidating. The memory of being bitten in the bathroom was hard to forget.
Gu Li seemed like someone from a good family, while her own father had been a completely different kind of person.
When Jiang Nian didn’t receive a reply right away, her mind began to fill with doubt. She clutched the blanket with her right hand, and her eyes slowly lost their brightness. She looked down, clearly disappointed.
Gu Li didn’t answer at first. After a long pause, she slowly knelt down in front of her. She reached out and placed her hand over Jiang Nian’s clenched fist. She applied a bit of pressure, both to reassure Jiang Nian and to gather courage for herself.
“Jiang Nian, there’s something I want to tell you. Please listen to me first. After that, you can decide whether or not you still want to be my friend.”
She had the right to know the truth before making that choice.
