- Chapter 6 - Embrace
The girl in the hospital gown looked up. Gu Li’s hand was wrapped around hers, warm and firm. The grip was a little tight, sending a clear message that Gu Li’s heart was far from calm.
Gu Li hadn’t noticed that the suppressant patch on the back of her neck had been removed during the earlier medical check. Her gland was now exposed to the air, and due to her nervous state, it had begun to release her pheromones.
It carried a faint, cool scent of lavender.
That gentle fragrance slowly filled the closed hospital room, quietly staking its claim. Under Gu Li’s subconscious, it drifted toward Jiang Nian as a subtle sign of affection.
But Gu Li couldn’t smell it. She didn’t realize she was unknowingly expressing her fondness to the girl in front of her.
Jiang Nian felt the full weight of Gu Li’s gaze. The cool air from the air conditioner carried the lavender scent to her, soft and intoxicating.
Gu Li finally spoke.
“Jiang Nian, do you remember when I bit you?”
Jiang Nian blinked, confused as to why she would bring that up now, and waited for her to go on.
“I have a rare condition that causes me to crave bl00d. So during your last period, whenever I caught your scent, I felt an overwhelming urge to bite you.”
As Gu Li spoke, she watched Jiang Nian’s face carefully. When she noticed a small shift in her expression, she decided not to say what she had originally planned—how Jiang Nian’s bl00d, specifically, held a dangerously strong attraction for her.
“If you want to be friends with me, it might be risky. I don’t know if I can fully control myself. I might hurt you.”
Her voice dimmed slightly. She had started to accept the idea that she was some kind of monster, but even so, opening up about it was still frightening.
Jiang Nian was probably scared too. Who wouldn’t be, facing someone unpredictable and potentially dangerous?
“So that day, when you ran away, it wasn’t because you hated me touching you? It wasn’t because you were angry that I covered your mouth, and that’s why you bit me?”
Jiang Nian’s voice was soft and uncertain. What mattered most to her was whether Gu Li had been avoiding her out of dislike.
“No. You’re a very good person, Jiang Nian. I don’t dislike you.”
Jiang Nian gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Her eyes curved into a smile, and a single dimple appeared on one cheek.
“You’re really good too, Gu Li. I like you.”
There had never been rejection. From the beginning, Gu Li had been trying to protect her. Jiang Nian had spoken so quickly that it took her a moment to realize what she had said.
“No, wait. I don’t mean that kind of like. I mean the kind of like between friends.”
She hurried to explain herself, cheeks turning slightly pink. Even though she tried to correct herself, she didn’t let go of Gu Li’s hand.
Even a fool could see that Jiang Nian wasn’t afraid of her condition anymore.
“Then let’s be good friends.”
Gu Li let out a breath. Her other palm was already soaked with cold sweat. She wiped it on her clothes, then pulled over a chair and sat down next to Jiang Nian’s bed.
“To make sure I never hurt you, let’s set three friendship rules. First, when your period is coming, you have to tell me. Second, if you’re ever injured, don’t hide it—let me know. Third, if you’re feeling unwell, you have to tell me in advance too. Is that okay?”
She made these three rules entirely out of fear. The scent of bl00d might overwhelm her, and she didn’t want to lose control.
But the way she said them sounded oddly personal, almost like something a couple would agree on. The thought of having to inform Gu Li about her period made Jiang Nian’s ears heat up.
“Is that okay?”
Gu Li leaned in slightly. The lavender scent grew stronger, carried by the cool air, gently circling around Jiang Nian. As if sensing her hesitation, Gu Li quickly added, “You can make three rules for me too.”
Betas weren’t supposed to be able to smell pheromones. But Jiang Nian didn’t know what was happening to her. That light, clean scent kept finding its way into her nose. Her neck, which hadn’t undergone differentiation yet, felt itchy.
She couldn’t think clearly. Her voice came out soft and sweet, with a hint of pleading.
“Can you hug me?”
“What?”
Gu Li was completely caught off guard by the request.
Jiang Nian’s eyes were slightly unfocused. She let go of Gu Li’s hand and reached out with both arms. When Gu Li didn’t respond right away, she looked at her with a hint of frustration. Her little hands opened and closed, as if she were a child begging to be picked up.
It was strangely adorable.
Gu Li felt her heartbeat quicken. She stood up slowly, leaned over, and gently lowered Jiang Nian’s outstretched arm. Then she wrapped one arm around her waist and the other behind her head. Pressing her cheek to the warmth of Jiang Nian’s face, she gave a soft, affectionate rub.
Her skin was smooth and soft, like the delicate cheek of a newborn. It was so tempting, Gu Li almost wanted to pinch it.
Jiang Nian wrapped her free arm around Gu Li’s back.
It felt like she had been transported into a vast field of lavender. The purple sea surrounded her, holding her gently. She closed her eyes. Gu Li’s hair brushed against her face, making the warmth of the cheek rub even more vivid.
She moved her nose slightly, drawn by the strongest source of the scent. Slowly, she buried her face into the curve of Gu Li’s neck.
The gland unique to an alpha was trembling slightly. All the emotion in the room flowed from it, and it was still releasing pheromones without restraint.
Jiang Nian licked her slightly dry lips without thinking. She didn’t know exactly what Gu Li’s craving for bl00d felt like, but right now, with that vulnerable gland exposed before her, she felt a strange pull as well.
She wanted to bite her.
That strange surge of possessiveness rose in Jiang Nian’s chest. Her little front teeth itched uncontrollably. Gu Li smelled so good. She wanted to take a bite.
Warm breath brushed against Gu Li’s neck, making her feel an unexpected tickle. She had no idea what the girl in her arms was doing.
“Are you feeling better?”
Gu Li’s hand moved from the back of Jiang Nian’s head to her back, gently patting her as if comforting a friend after a heartbreak. Jiang Nian hadn’t cried, but Gu Li felt like it was awkward just to stand there doing nothing. So she patted her back, just like she used to do with her college roommate after breakups.
She had done this often enough in her past life that it no longer felt strange. Any hint of intimacy had been softened by her natural instinct to offer comfort.
Her voice broke Jiang Nian’s daze. Jiang Nian pulled her head back slightly. Her lips brushed against Gu Li’s neck by accident, and both of them shivered from the unexpected touch.
Jiang Nian let go and slowly pulled away from her arms. Her voice was quiet as she said, “I’m okay now. Thank you.”
Gu Li withdrew her hands from Jiang Nian’s waist and back, then gently reached forward to feel her forehead.
“Why is your face so red? Did you catch a chill?”
“No,” Jiang Nian said quickly, avoiding her hand. She didn’t dare look at Gu Li. Somehow, she was becoming addicted to her scent.
She wanted to smell it again. She wanted to bite her.
“Good,” Gu Li said, drawing her hand back with a smile. “Have you thought of your three requests, Nian Nian?”
Now that they had opened up to each other, it felt more natural to speak freely.
“Hugs like earlier are allowed too. If you ever feel sad, just ask for one. A good hug can help us recharge.”
“Really?” Jiang Nian asked softly.
“Of course. If you ever feel upset, just open your arms like before. I’ll come running and give you a recharge.”
Gu Li saw nothing wrong with it. Girls hugging girls was normal. Even cheek kisses could be part of a deep friendship between close friends.
“Then I just want this one request. Is that okay, Gu Gu?”
Jiang Nian sweetly mimicked Gu Li’s earlier nickname for her, her tone playful like a child asking for a reward.
“Okay.”
Jiang Nian’s IV was nearly finished. Gu Li pressed the call button for the nurse. Outside, the sky had already turned dark. Jiang Nian was on the phone with her grandmother.
“Grandma, I’m fine. I’ll be able to come home in a couple of days. Your legs aren’t strong, so don’t worry about coming to see me. The meals here are really good. Make sure you’re eating well too. I miss you.”
Gu Li had already asked someone to check in on Grandma Jiang, but since the elderly woman and Jiang Nian had always relied on each other, she hadn’t been at ease until she heard her granddaughter’s voice herself. Once she knew Jiang Nian sounded strong, she felt reassured and stayed on the line, chatting and nagging lovingly from the other end.
Gu Li lay on her own hospital bed with a book, listening to Jiang Nian’s voice. She was already thinking ahead about arrangements for Grandma Jiang, just in case anything unexpected happened. She also needed to prepare for the upcoming legal education class at school. Now that she and Jiang Nian were officially friends, Gu Li knew she had to take responsibility, both for her condition and for their personal bond. Jiang Nian was her little medicine kit, after all.
“Okay, Grandma. Bye for now.”
Jiang Nian hung up and swiped through her phone. Suddenly remembering something, she turned to Gu Li.
“Gu Gu, we still haven’t added each other on WeChat.”
She held up her phone and shook it at her with a hopeful look. Her face was flushed, and the way she asked was so cute it was hard to refuse. Gu Li smiled and picked up her phone, opened her WeChat QR code, and let Jiang Nian scan it. Once they added each other, she saved Jiang Nian’s contact under her real name.
On the other end, Jiang Nian held her phone carefully. She stared at the confirmation that Gu Li had accepted her request. Gu Li’s profile picture was a little kid pouting. Her username was simply “Gu.” Jiang Nian deleted the default contact note and replaced it with three serious words: “My Light.”
She sneaked a glance at Gu Li’s expression, then quietly slid her phone under her pillow and lay down.
Gu Li had arrived, bringing with her the light that had slowly begun to illuminate Jiang Nian’s path forward.
Gu Li put down her book, stood up, and turned off the lights. As she walked past Jiang Nian’s bed, she looked at the sleeping girl and whispered softly.
“Goodnight, Nian Nian.”
