- Chapter 8 - The Rising Tide
During math class, the teacher presented a problem based on the material they had just covered the day before. The students lowered their heads and began calculating quietly. Gu Li found the answer, then capped her pen.
“Has anyone solved it yet?”
Mr. Gao adjusted his glasses and wrote the word “solution” in chalk beneath the problem on the board.
Only a few hands were raised. Gu Li sat upright, calmly waiting for someone else to answer.
“Oh, Jiang Nian also got it. Would you like to explain it to the class?”
Mr. Gao smiled as he called on her.
Over the past few days, Jiang Nian had been turning in highly accurate math assignments, and that was when he realized there was an outstanding math student in his class who had previously gone unnoticed.
“The answer should be the square root of ten,” Jiang Nian said after glancing at her scratch paper.
“That is correct. Would you mind coming up and sharing your method with the class?”
Mr. Gao’s smile grew warmer as he walked over to her desk.
Jiang Nian picked up her notebook and took the piece of chalk he handed her. On the board, she added two auxiliary lines to the cube diagram and then clearly copied her solution step-by-step.
Ever since she had spoken up in class two days earlier about her father, Jiang Nian had changed significantly. She used to avoid speaking during lessons, but now she stood confidently in front of the class. Gu Li thought it was a very good change.
As she listened to the teacher praise Jiang Nian, Gu Li smiled to herself and marked her own answer with a red check. Her eyes curved gently with satisfaction.
If she had to point out one thing that was different about this world compared to her original one, it was probably the fact that high schools here included dedicated physiology courses for the ABO system. These classes were meant to educate students on the dynamics and biology between alphas, betas, and omegas.
By the second year of high school, most students had already undergone their secondary gender differentiation. Some had become alphas, some omegas, and others had remained betas. Because of this, B High separated physiology classes. Alphas and omegas had their own specialized classes. Betas could either choose which to attend or stay in the classroom for self-study, since ABO-specific content wasn’t especially relevant to them.
Despite this, behind Gu Li, a certain little shadow was quietly following her.
Jiang Nian, with her slightly worn grey canvas backpack, trailed obediently behind Gu Li on her way to alpha physiology class.
“Nian Nian?” Gu Li turned around, half amused. “Are you planning to attend alpha physiology?”
Jiang Nian hadn’t differentiated yet, and even when she did, she would most likely become an omega. She should have been heading to the omega class.
“This is the last period of the day. I wanted to go home with you.”
Since that day when Jiang Nian had stood up and spoken about her father, the two of them had walked to the school gate together each afternoon. Gu Li, worried about her emotions, had held her hand the entire way.
What she didn’t expect was for this little kitten to treat that hand-holding as default. For several days now, Jiang Nian had neatly packed her bag early and waited at Gu Li’s desk to walk home together. She had not asked for another hug, but the hand-holding happened more and more often.
Since physiology class was in a different classroom, they ended up sitting side by side for the first time in a real classroom setting. Jiang Nian laid out her notebook and supplies, occasionally sneaking glances at Gu Li’s profile.
Surrounded by the scent of other alphas, Gu Li instinctively checked the suppressant patch on her neck to make sure it was still intact. She wanted to be sure she hadn’t accidentally released her pheromones, which could provoke a reaction. Her sensitivity to pheromones wasn’t particularly high, unless someone aggressively directed theirs at her like Zhang Nan had done previously. Most of the time, her vampire instincts dominated over typical alpha responses.
The physiology teacher was a woman in her forties, also an alpha. She smiled as she wrote her surname on the board.
“You can all call me Ms. Gu. I’ll be leading your physiology classes this term. Today, we’ll begin by talking about how alphas perform marking.”
She neatly wrote two characters on the board that spelled out “marking.”
A male alpha in the back laughed and called out, “Isn’t that just instinct, though? Who doesn’t know how to mark? Is there really anything to teach?”
Several others laughed in agreement.
Ms. Gu tapped the desk lightly to quiet the room. “Everything has levels. There’s doing it poorly, doing it adequately, and doing it well. Marking is no exception.”
Gu Li turned her pen between her fingers and thought about it. She wasn’t sure she had ever felt the urge to mark anyone. Her instinct seemed to be more about biting and drawing bl00d. Did that mean, technically, she didn’t count?
Ms. Gu opened the presentation and pointed to an image on the slide showing a set of sharp alpha canines.
“Most alphas have canines that range in length from one to two and a half centimeters. This length determines how deeply an alpha can enter an omega’s reproductive gland.”
Several students instinctively started comparing their own teeth, trying to estimate the length.
Ms. Gu knocked on the board.
“Longer does not mean better. Don’t start comparing. This class is meant to teach you how to mark safely and properly, not to hurt your omega or beta partners. If you can’t stop talking, I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
Jiang Nian stole a glance at Gu Li. She still remembered how deeply those teeth had sunk into her hand. Gu Li’s canines must have been very long.
As for Gu Li herself, who was being silently admired, she was completely unfazed. Those were fangs, not regular canines. They only extended when she was feeding. Normally, they were just like small molars, used for chewing food like any other teeth. Where were these strange facts even coming from?
Still, she quietly wrote down the average canine length in her notes and continued listening.
“Marking should never be done without preparation. The reproductive glands of omegas and betas are extremely delicate. They require gradual stimulation by pheromones to relax. Only after confirming they’re fully ready should marking begin. During the process, their physical movements must be gently restrained. There have been many cases where a partner moved too much during marking, causing the alpha to bite the wrong place, resulting in serious injuries.”
After firmly correcting the students who were still comparing their fang lengths, Ms. Gu switched to the next slide on the screen.
“Another important element is pheromones,” she said. “Learning how to properly use pheromones to guide your partner during heat is a crucial skill. This includes several important areas.”
Her tone remained calm and professional, even though the subject matter was becoming more detailed. Gu Li found herself a little overwhelmed. The world of ABO was surprisingly open about all of this.
Still, she figured it was useful. Even though she had no idea what kind of partner she might have in the future, she felt it was important to be responsible. As an alpha, she needed to learn how to care for her future companion.
Her pen moved quickly across her notebook. She didn’t miss a single important point. Sitting beside her, Jiang Nian occasionally glanced over. Watching Gu Li so focused made her feel warm inside.
“Alright,” said Ms. Gu, “now I’ll show you a demonstration of how to properly release pheromones to guide an omega into heat. This is not inappropriate. It’s an official instructional video with a solo demonstration for teaching purposes only.”
She emphasized that clearly. Every year, she had to explain it to energetic alphas who got too curious at this part of the lesson.
As the video played, Gu Li listened closely. But the first instruction completely confused her.
“Feel your own gland?” she thought. “How do you feel something like that? Isn’t it just part of your body?”
Then came the next step. “Try to release your pheromones.”
She tilted her head and gave it a try. Apparently, many of the other alphas in the room were doing the same thing. But because they were all wearing suppression patches, no pheromones were released.
Except for the beta sitting next to her.
Jiang Nian, cheeks flushed red, was also following along. She reached up and gently touched the back of her neck, even though she had not yet undergone gender differentiation.
Just as Gu Li started to wonder where the scent of milk tea was coming from, an alpha student nearby suddenly lunged toward Jiang Nian.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Gu Li moved quickly and pulled Jiang Nian into her arms, blocking the attack.
The student’s eyes were red, clearly showing signs of entering a sensitivity episode.
Ms. Gu immediately realized something was wrong. She reached into her bag and tossed a suppression patch over. “Put this on her neck. It looks like she’s entering pre-heat. It’s rare, but not unheard of, even for second-year students.”
Jiang Nian felt her body growing hotter. Gu Li’s cool hand gently touched the back of her neck and pressed the patch into place. The tingling sensation eased slightly.
“Good thing we noticed early. It only affected one student,” Ms. Gu said as she looked at the alpha boy who had been restrained by his classmates. His expression had calmed, and he seemed to have no memory of what just happened.
“But this is interesting,” she added while glancing at Gu Li. “You were sitting right next to her and didn’t react at all. Your pheromones must be completely incompatible.”
Her gaze lingered for a moment on Gu Li’s hand, which was still resting around Jiang Nian’s waist.
Gu Li quickly let go and scratched her head. “What exactly is pre-heat? Is there something special about it?”
“That’s a good question,” Ms. Gu said. “Let’s take this opportunity to explain it properly.”
She told everyone to sit down again and plugged a USB drive into the computer. A new video began to play, explaining what pre-heat is and why it occurs.
The narrator described that certain betas, those with the potential to develop marking abilities and high fertility, might go through pre-heat before fully differentiating. These individuals often became top-tier alphas or omegas, and they were unique in that they could choose which gender they would become before the end of pre-heat.
Gu Li was surprised. “So the heroine can even choose her gender? That’s kind of unfair.”
She didn’t recall this part being in the original novel. In the book, Jiang Nian had been forced to differentiate after being bitten by a vampire in the school restroom. Her omega pheromones had spread through the halls, drawing attention and finally allowing others to rescue her.
Jiang Nian quietly touched the suppression patch on the back of her neck. “So I really get to choose?”
After the class ended, Ms. Gu walked over with a business card and handed it to Jiang Nian. “Pre-heat needs to be monitored carefully to ensure healthy differentiation. This doctor is an expert in this area. You should go for a check-up. Also, the video didn’t mention this, but betas who undergo pre-heat retain their marking ability, whether they become alpha or omega.”
