- Chapter 9 - Visiting Jiang Nian’s Home
The two of them, who were supposed to part ways at the school gate, ended up getting into the car driven by the Gu family’s chauffeur.
“To the hospital,” Gu Li said. The hospital listed on the card just happened to be the one owned by her family.
Jiang Nian sat nervously in the back seat. She squeezed Gu Li’s hand, which was still holding hers.
“I can go on my own this weekend. There’s no need for you to come with me.”
“It’s fine. I go there every day to pick up my medication anyway. I’ll just take you there on the way.”
Gu Li replied casually, but when she noticed the driver glancing at them curiously, she subtly pulled her hand away.
“What medication?” Jiang Nian asked, distracted by this sudden change of topic.
“Hmm? The one I told you about before. To help control the craving for bl00d.”
Gu Li had recently started cooperating with her doctor’s treatment. She knew she couldn’t rely on Jiang Nian’s bl00d forever. The physical symptoms could be eased over time, but the addiction had to be dealt with through her own willpower and medication.
Jiang Nian fell silent. She kept feeling like something Gu Li had told her in the hospital room that day was left unsaid.
She had hidden something.
“Pre-heat?” The doctor looked surprised after examining the card. He glanced at the girl in front of him. She didn’t look like she was at the usual age for pre-heat. For a beta to experience pre-heat at her age was extremely rare.
“Have you recently been exposed to anyone’s pheromones at close range?” the doctor asked as he picked up the stethoscope hanging around his neck.
Gu Li had gone to consult with Specialist Ji and wasn’t in the room anymore.
“Yes, it was an alpha’s pheromones,” Jiang Nian answered honestly.
“Is that person your partner? How old are you? Are you two an A-B couple? Has she ever bitten your gland?” The doctor’s questions came rapidly, making Jiang Nian flustered and unsure how to respond.
Seeing her discomfort, the doctor decided to listen to her lungs first to check for any irregularities and to rule out disease as a cause of her symptoms.
“Don’t worry, I’m just asking for the record. I specialize in this field, so I tend to be curious about all the possible causes.” The doctor gave her a kind smile and patted her shoulder gently, encouraging her to relax.
“No, we’re not partners. We were just in the same room when she accidentally released her pheromones and I smelled them. She didn’t bite my gland, but she did bite my hand. I’m a second-year high school student.”
“Biting your hand? Is that some new trend among young couples?” The doctor scribbled rapidly in his notes. Before Jiang Nian could say anything, he added, “Do her pheromones attract you?”
Jiang Nian didn’t know how to answer. She really did like Gu Li’s pheromones. It made her want to bite her, to devour her. But Gu Li was an alpha. Wasn’t she supposed to be the one marking someone? Were they both alphas?
“Don’t be shy. This is just a natural instinct,” the doctor said softly after giving her a moment.
“Yes,” Jiang Nian nodded.
“It’s likely your body had a stress response caused by a high pheromone compatibility between the two of you. Bring her in next time so we can test both your pheromone sequences and compare them with your pre-heat signals. I’ll write you a prescription for now. Just remember to take the meds regularly.” The doctor tapped his pen against the desk and began typing quickly on the computer.
At that moment, Gu Li knocked on the door.
“Are you done, Nian Nian?”
“Yes, I’m done!” Jiang Nian jumped up, grabbed the prescription slip, and rushed out. She glanced sideways at Gu Li and asked, “When did you get here?”
Did she overhear anything? Especially the part about being drawn to her pheromones?
“I just got here. I finished with my doctor and came to check if you were ready. We can pick up the meds and head home together,” Gu Li said naturally. She reached for Jiang Nian’s hand and held it as they walked outside. “Was everything okay? Did the doctor say anything serious?”
Her voice was warm and gentle. She took Jiang Nian’s health card and paid at the self-service machine without hesitation.
“Nothing serious,” Jiang Nian replied, accepting the receipt. She couldn’t bring herself to ask Gu Li to take a pheromone compatibility test with her. It felt too much like a premarital checkup.
The car was already heading in the direction of Jiang Nian’s home, but she didn’t notice. Her mind was still preoccupied with how to talk to Gu Li about the compatibility issue.
“Nian Nian? We’re here.” Gu Li gently tapped her shoulder.
Here? Where?
Jiang Nian looked up in confusion and saw the small shop her family owned. Even from inside the car, she could clearly see the red paint on the wall outside. Her grandmother was walking toward them with a medicine bag in hand. She quickly opened the door and got out.
But Gu Li had already stepped out before her and walked over to support Grandma Jiang.
“Please be careful, ma’am.”
“Grandma!” Jiang Nian finally stepped out of the car. She looked at Gu Li, then back at her grandmother.
“Are you Nian Nian’s friend?” Grandma Jiang asked. It had been over a year since she’d seen her granddaughter come home with anyone. And this girl came in a private car. She looked like she came from a wealthy family.
“Yes, I’m her good friend,” Gu Li replied with a polite smile. “I have some health issues and Nian Nian accompanied me to the hospital, so I brought her back afterward.”
She had caught the hint in Jiang Nian’s eyes and didn’t mention anything about the pre-heat.
Grandma Jiang had lived a long time and could see through their subtle exchange. Still, Jiang Nian’s instinctive closeness to the girl was genuine. It wasn’t something she could fake. This girl must truly be close to her granddaughter. Had she finally made a new friend at school?
“It’s getting late. Would you like to stay for dinner?” Grandma Jiang asked gently, holding Gu Li’s hand.
Jiang Nian looked at Gu Li. She must be able to see the red paint on the shop’s wall. Would she be willing to stay and have dinner with her family?
“Is it alright?” Gu Li looked at Jiang Nian. Her face was filled with uncertainty, but also with a strong desire to stay.
Those bl00d-red eyes looked directly at her.
The Gu family’s dining room was spacious but always cold and empty. The only people in that villa were Gu Li and the butler. Most of the time, the butler stood beside her silently while she ate. The table was always full of food, but only one person ever picked up chopsticks.
Since coming into this world, it had been a very long time since she had eaten a simple home-cooked meal with someone else.
The girl in front of her beamed and tugged her toward the house.
“Of course you can.”
The house was small. Most of the space outside had been turned into a convenience store. A few shelves lined the narrow walkway, making the path a bit cramped. As Jiang Nian and her grandmother led Gu Li inside, she took a careful look around at the layout of the little shop, silently committing a few details to memory.
They passed through a door that led into the family’s private living area. Inside was a small square dining table. On it sat a few simple homemade dishes: shredded spicy potatoes, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and a bowl of seaweed soup. These weren’t the kind of elegant meals Gu Li was used to eating at home, but they were the same familiar dishes she had loved most in her previous life.
Grandma Jiang brought out an extra bowl of rice and invited her to sit and eat. Throughout dinner, she kept asking about how they were doing at school. For a moment, Gu Li felt like she had gone back to her own high school days, eating dinner while a parent nagged her about grades and homework.
But this time, the feeling was different. She didn’t want it to end. She wanted to hear more.
The driver had already returned to the Gu residence. Gu Li had told him to come pick her up just before bedtime. In the extra time she had, she followed Jiang Nian into her bedroom.
It was a small room, with only a single bed and a desk. There was a bit of extra space where an easel stood.
As evening approached, the only light in the room came from the setting sun. The lamp hadn’t been turned on. The window had a perfect view, facing the distant hills. The golden rays of sunset streamed through the open window and spilled across the floor. The room wasn’t big, but it held a certain quiet charm.
On the easel stood a painting. The brushes and art supplies were scattered nearby. The brush in Jiang Nian’s hand hovered over the canvas, frozen mid-stroke. What was strange was that the painting showed a sunrise, not a sunset, and the colors she used were completely different from what was outside the window.
Anyone who looked closely would realize the truth.
She had used the sunset as a reference to paint a sunrise.
It was that very painting. The one Jiang Nian had painted during one of her darkest times, using the sunset as a guide to create a picture of hope. She had always been a strong girl. Even if Gu Li hadn’t come into her life, she would have eventually found her way back. She lived in the dark, yet always longed for the light. That was the kind of person she was.
All Gu Li had done was bring her that light a little earlier. She was no savior. At best, she was just an ordinary person who had befriended her out of sympathy and her own selfishness.
Jiang Nian came in with two cups of hot water. She separated her own medicine from Gu Li’s and handed her the correct one. She sat down on the bed, squinting slightly as she watched Gu Li tilt her head back to swallow the pills. She also noticed the way Gu Li stared at the painting, and scratched the back of her neck where it had started to itch.
She had already started using pheromone suppressants. She could feel it. Her nape was beginning to show signs of transformation, especially when she was alone with Gu Li.
Bring her in next time to test her pheromone sequence and compare it to your pre-heat signals.
The doctor’s voice from earlier that afternoon still echoed in her mind.
Would this become another bond between them?
“There’s going to be a national high school art competition soon in B City,” Gu Li said as she pulled her gaze away from the painting and walked slowly over.
It was the competition Jiang Nian had missed in the original story because of an injury caused by local bullies. This time, she had a chance to participate. In fact, the male lead of the book would also be in the competition. It could be the perfect moment for them to meet.
Gu Li had already removed the “villainous vampire” plotline from the story. Now, she just needed to create a new opportunity for them to come together.
Besides, Jiang Nian loved painting. That competition was what she had always dreamed of. If things had gone differently, she would probably be shining much more brightly by now.
Gu Li held her cup of hot water and looked at Jiang Nian’s eyes, which lit up with excitement. She couldn’t help but smile quietly to herself.
