- Chapter 32 - Gu Pei’s Worries
As these thoughts raced through her mind, an unexpected irritation surged within Gu Pei. Glancing sideways, she noticed the eager expression on the young girl’s face.
Without hesitation, she handed the beautifully made crystal cake to Mu Suru.
“I bought this on a whim. If you like it, it’s all yours.”
Mu Suru beamed a big, sweet smile, her eyes curving like crescent moons.
“Sister Gu, let’s split it and share!”
She broke one of the two pieces of crystal cake in half and handed a portion back to Gu Pei. The crystal-clear cake lay quietly in Mu Suru’s pale, jade-like palm.
Gu Pei carefully picked up the piece and took a small bite under Mu Suru’s expectant gaze.
The sweet flavor spread through her mouth, and though she typically disliked sweets, she found it surprisingly pleasant.
Perhaps it was because she had met someone she wanted to protect…
Mu Suru took small bites of the crystal-clear cake, inwardly relieved that she had pulled Gu Pei away just in time. If not, she would’ve been the one getting scolded.
Since it wasn’t an important plot point, Mu Suru could forcefully intervene without issue.
She led Gu Pei to a quiet fountain.
They watched the graceful, delicate streams of water cascade down, the glittering droplets vanishing into the radiant moonlight. The shimmering coins at the bottom of the pool looked like silver stars strewn across the heavens.
“Sister Gu, this is the famous wishing fountain in the Amusement Street. They say if you throw a coin into the mouth of the lion statue with sincere wishes, they will come true!”
Mu Suru smiled playfully, her blue dress as pure and beautiful as the sky itself.
The lion statue stood majestically, its mouth wide open, as if waiting for prey.
Gu Pei hesitated slightly, then laughed softly. “Alright.”
She weighed the coin in her hand and flicked it effortlessly into the lion’s mouth.
Mu Suru’s face lit up with surprise. “Wow, Sister Gu, you’re amazing! What did you wish for?”
Gu Pei playfully tousled her hair and gave a mysterious smile. “If I tell you, it won’t come true, little girl.”
Her amber eyes shimmered with warmth and amusement as she looked at Mu Suru.
May you find happiness and peace, with no regrets in this lifetime.
Mu Suru pouted but then giggled, tugging Gu Pei down to sit by the fountain.
“Sister Gu, I know you have worries. My big brother says that once you cry it all out, everything will feel better. You can lean on my shoulder, okay?”
Mu Suru’s innocent words hit Gu Pei hard. In an instant, her tall, strong posture seemed to crumble under the weight she had been carrying for so long.
Without any regard for appearances, Gu Pei buried her face in Mu Suru’s small shoulder and began to cry loudly. “Wahhh…”
Her cries were so intense that it attracted curious looks from passing couples.
Mu Suru never expected the usually bold and fierce Gu Pei to cry so… beautifully!
Yes, beautiful!
Gu Pei sobbed until she could barely breathe, occasionally pounding Mu Suru’s chest with her small fists.
Great… another big hit!
Her father’s mistrust and accusations, her half-sister’s constant flaunting. All these burdens Gu Pei had been carrying were far too heavy for someone her age.
Now that she had let it all out, she felt an immense sense of relief, though her eyes were swollen and sore.
Gu Pei rubbed her eyes, wanting to express her heartfelt thanks to Mu Suru.
But when she looked up, she saw Mu Suru’s pained expression, as if she were on the verge of fainting.
???
“Suru, are you alright?”
Mu Suru felt bitter inside. Truly… I should never comfort a tough girl like her again!
“I’m fine…” she muttered.
But it seemed she had forgotten something…
In the dark corner of the alley, Ren Zai huddled, his small figure curled up. His pitch-black eyes gleamed with a strange light.
Sister, you’ve abandoned me again~

Under the dim lights, Mu Chen’s sharply defined, handsome face flickered between shadows, his jawline appearing even more chiseled.
Hua Shaoyi stood beside him, staring dreamily at this man.
He had shed the immaturity of his high school days and now radiated a calm, mature aura.
Distracted, Hua Shaoyi tripped over a stone, her high heels wobbling as she fell forward.
In a panic, she covered her face, thinking only one thing: I can’t let my beautiful face get scratched!
But before she hit the ground, a pair of strong arms caught her by the waist.
She opened her eyes and found herself gazing into Mu Chen’s dark, obsidian-like eyes.
In that moment, it felt as if the entire world faded away, leaving only the two of them. The noise and commotion of the surrounding streets disappeared, replaced by the sound of an ever-louder heartbeat.
Mu Chen looked at Hua Shaoyi’s small, delicate face, her lips slightly parted in surprise, as if waiting for someone to claim them.
His throat went dry, and he swallowed hard.
Just as the atmosphere became increasingly charged, a child’s voice interrupted.
“Mom, what are they doing?”
A young mother stopped beside them, holding a little boy by the hand. The boy’s innocent face was full of confusion, then suddenly he clapped his hands and exclaimed loudly, “I get it! They’re being lovey-dovey, just like Mommy and Daddy!”
The mother’s face turned red as she quickly covered the boy’s mouth and gave an apologetic smile before hurrying away.
Hua Shaoyi finally snapped out of the moment, realizing their intimate position. She immediately pulled away, her flawless face flushed, her eyes tinged with embarrassment. “Thank you, Mu Chen.”
Mu Chen, feeling the absence of her warmth, experienced a sense of loss.
“It’s nothing.”
He slipped his hands into his pockets, as if the tenderness in his eyes moments ago had been an illusion.
Buzz Buzz. The phone was vibrating and Mu Chen pressed the answer button.
Mu Suru’s cheerful voice came through. “Big brother, I ran into a friend from school, so I’m with her. Don’t worry about me…”
Mu Chen rubbed his forehead and spoke with a trace of sternness. “Ru Tuan, this better not happen again.”
“I understand, big brother…” Mu Suru’s sweet, pleading tone softened his anger. “I’ll meet you both in two hours at the Tianmu House.”
“Got it.”
Relieved that he no longer had to worry about his sister, Mu Chen turned his attention back to Hua Shaoyi, ready to continue their evening.
Hua Shaoyi smiled coyly, a thought crossing her mind: This little sister sure is a great wingman!
As they walked side by side, unsure of what to say, the sound of a growling stomach broke the silence.
Mu Chen paused, puzzled. “What was that noise?”
After a moment of silence, he turned and saw Hua Shaoyi tightly clutching her flat stomach, her eyes darting everywhere but at him.
A look of slight confusion mixed with realization crossed Mu Chen’s face. “Hua Shaoyi, did you skip eating?”
Hua Shaoyi nodded shyly. She had been so eager to meet him that there was no way she could focus on eating!
A faint smile tugged at Mu Chen’s lips. Just like in high school, when she would skip meals just to see me…
He spotted a well-known wonton shop nearby. “Let’s go eat.”
Hua Shaoyi’s eyes sparkled with delight. “Okay!”
