- Chapter 36 - A Bet to Prove Innocence
Meng Chang’an stood still, and Xu Qiang tugged at him but found he couldn’t move him.
“Chang’an, you…”
Gu Pei turned around and saw the two of them standing out among the crowd.
On her fair face, her narrow eyes were full of impatience.
With her hands in her pockets, she walked past them coolly.
Meng Chang’an smelled the faint scent of pear blossoms getting closer, and his heart began to race.
At that moment, he opened his lips: “Sister Gu, I believe Mu Suru didn’t cheat!”
At the same time, Gu Pei stopped walking. Xu Qiang was frantically signaling with his eyes: “Are you crazy? Do you have a death wish?!”
Gu Pei, hearing that familiar voice, stopped for unknown reasons.
She turned around and looked at the young boy who was at least two heads shorter than her, with a delicate face.
Meng Chang’an nervously pressed his lips together, his neat eyebrows furrowing in thought.
Seeing this, Gu Pei’s mood improved: “You sure know how to talk, little brother!”
Meng Chang’an adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, and his shy eyes blinked: “Sister Gu, I really admire you!”
Xu Qiang: ?? You admire Gu Pei? Why didn’t I know this?!
Gu Pei pulled down the brim of her hat, her red lips forming the word, “Thanks.”
Then she walked away with long strides. Meng Chang’an watched her back, the smile in his eyes deepening.
“You little brat, you’ve really got some tricks, huh?”
Xu Qiang playfully punched him, trying to coax Meng Chang’an into admitting when he started admiring Gu Pei.
But unfortunately, his mouth was as tight as steel, and he even turned the tables, tickling Xu Qiang until he begged for mercy.

Office
Mu Wu was enthusiastically bragging to her colleague about her student: “You have no idea… Meng Chang’an may look a bit slow, but he’s always ranked third in the entire grade. He’s my favorite student!”
Suddenly, there was a loud bang as the door was pushed open. Li Zhi stormed in angrily and began scolding Mu Wu: “Mu Wu, this student is from your class, right? She actually cheated! But it’s not surprising, considering someone like you can only be the deputy head teacher of Class F!”
His unreasonable outburst brought tears to Mu Wu’s eyes, which were already red with anger.
The colleague suppressed his smug smile and comforted: “Mu Wu, this has nothing to do with you. Don’t take it to heart.”
How was that supposed to be comforting?
Mu Wu, just in her early twenties, was fresh out of college, her face still youthful.
Feeling deeply wronged, she looked at Mu Suru, who had just walked in. Connecting this with Li Zhi’s words, she quickly understood what was going on.
“Mu Suru! It’s one thing if you don’t study, but now you’ve caused such trouble with your cheating. How shameless can you be?!”
As if she were pouring out all her grievances, Mu Wu’s sharp tongue kept on blaming her.
“Teacher, shouldn’t you first ask what happened?” Mu Suru stood confidently, her imposing stance almost making Mu Wu choke.
“You…”
Li Zhi impatiently interrupted her: “I’m just here to inform you, the principal will be here soon.”
Mu Wu immediately fell silent and sat nervously in her chair.
Since Mu Suru was a student from her Class F, if the cheating incident was proven true, she would definitely be punished.
Not only would her still-unpaid salary for the month be withheld, but her year-end bonus too…
Principal Wang Gang arrived unhurriedly. His head full of silver hair, his sharp, hawk-like eyes radiating an unpleasant coldness.
He spoke sternly: “Mu Suru, you have seriously violated the school’s regulation number 130. You are hereby given a demerit and placed on probation!”
Wang Gang didn’t want this situation to blow up. It was best to quickly resolve this issue after all, she was just a poor student.
Mu Suru blinked innocently and asked, “Principal, why are you convicting me without properly investigating the matter?”
Wang Gang, feeling slightly uneasy, raised his voice: “I have investigated! I found out the camera in your exam room was destroyed. I have every reason to suspect you did it. Since the evidence is destroyed, no one will know you cheated!”
Mu Suru almost wanted to applaud. His ability to twist the truth was masterful!
She immediately made a call: “Big brother, it’s me.”
Mu Chen calmly took a sip of coffee, slightly puzzled: “Ru Tuan, what’s wrong?”
“Big brother, I’ve been falsely accused, and now the principal wants to punish me.”
He was startled and quickly asked, “Wait for me, ten minutes.”
She hung up, and the confidence in Mu Suru’s expression unsettled Wang Gang.
He knew Mu Suru was admitted to the school as a special case due to her poor background.
But seeing her calm demeanor now, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had underestimated something…
Ten minutes later, there was a punctual knock at the office door.
Wang Gang maintained his stern posture, waiting for three knocks before finally saying, “Come in.”
A pair of long legs entered first, followed by a tall, broad-shouldered figure with a sharp, handsome face, wearing an expression of urgency.
Wang Gang suddenly felt the blood freeze in his veins. Forcing a smile, he said, “Oh, it’s President Mu. What brings you here?”
Please, let it not be what he feared.
“Ru Tuan, did anyone bully you?”
Mu Chen ignored Wang Gang entirely and instead anxiously pinched Mu Suru’s cheeks.
“No.”
She calmly answered, then smiled mischievously at the uneasy Wang Gang: “Other students have accused me of cheating… I requested to review the surveillance footage, but it just so happened that the camera was conveniently broken.”
“Ridiculous! My little Ru Tuan has been a genius since she was young. How could she possibly cheat?”
Mu Chen was resolute, his gaze toward Wang Gang turning cold.
Wang Gang nervously wiped the nonexistent sweat from his forehead and spoke obsequiously: “Let’s discuss this matter calmly. I will ensure it is properly handled!”
The other teachers were all shocked at Wang Gang’s submissiveness.
Wang Gang, as the school principal, was notorious for his greed. Normally, he would act as though he were above everyone, his eyes looking down on others.
But this was the first time they had seen him act so humbly…
Mu Suru thought of a plan to prove her innocence: “How about this? Have each subject teacher create a test on the spot, and I will complete it in front of the entire school!
If I prove I didn’t cheat, all the teachers will have to apologize to me!”
Her words were so firm that they left the teachers’ hearts racing.
They blushed in anger afterward.
After all, they were all postgraduate graduates from prestigious schools, each an elite in their own field, with their own pride!
Chinese teacher Jian Zi couldn’t hold back: “Apologize? Impossible!”
The other teachers had similar thoughts but remained quiet. After all, the early bird catches the worm, and they decided to let Jian Zi test the waters first.
Mu Chen lifted his gaze and looked at her, but before he could say anything, the crisp sound of a slap echoed in the room, “Smack!”
Jian Zi, clutching her reddened face in pain, turned her teary eyes toward Wang Gang: “Principal… Why did you…”
