- Chapter 14 - Fourteen
After bathing, Qiu Luo returned to Cheng Yu’s room. Though it was late autumn and the weather required warmer clothing than summer, she was only wearing a soft, white cotton inner robe that gently revealed the contours of her figure.
Cheng Yu immediately regretted her earlier curiosity. This kind of private, intimate setting made her uncomfortable—uncomfortable and nervous.
It felt as if someone had intruded into a world she had grown used to being alone in, occupying space she had always considered solely her own.
And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to dislike this person. On the contrary, her curiosity only deepened…
Seeing Cheng Yu silent, Qiu Luo studied her expression. “I can sleep in another room, if you’d prefer.”
“No need. This is fine,” Cheng Yu said with a faint shake of her head, brushing off her jumbled thoughts as she walked over to the table.
She casually picked up a book and began to read in silence.
Qiu Luo, taking the hint, didn’t disturb her. She climbed onto the bed quietly.
Cheng Yu’s head turned ever so slightly, and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Qiu Luo lying on the outer side of the bed. Her lips pressed together faintly.
As the guest, it made sense for Qiu Luo to sleep on the outside—just like Cheng Yu had done when they stayed at Qiu Luo’s place in Qiu Village.
So, the outer quilt was the one she normally used.
Unaware of all this, Qiu Luo had already slipped under it.
The moment she lay down, a faint fragrance drifted into her nose. Some kind of flower—she’d smelled it before, whenever she was near Cheng Yu. But she couldn’t pinpoint exactly which flower it was.
Does perfume exist in ancient times? she wondered. Or maybe it’s some kind of fragrant powder or scented sachet?
Whatever it was, the scent was subtle and quite pleasant.
Still, the more urgent matter was to fall asleep—preferably before Cheng Yu got into bed. It would save them both a lot of awkwardness.
Yes, she felt a little uncomfortable. Even though they were both women, they’d already shared such intimate moments…
Qiu Luo quickly shut her eyes and tried to summon sleep. She counted dumplings in her head—one tray after another—until finally, she drifted off.
At the table, Cheng Yu eventually stood up, carefully extinguished the candle, and made her way to the bed.
The moonlight poured in with a cold, silvery glow. Her eyes quickly adjusted to the dim room, and she quietly climbed over Qiu Luo to lie on the inside.
Seeing that the other person didn’t stir, she assumed she was already asleep.
For some reason, Cheng Yu let out a soft breath of relief. The tension in her heart eased a little.
But the next moment, Qiu Luo turned over—suddenly facing her.
Cheng Yu lightly bit her lower lip and turned away, now facing the wall.
Late into the night, perhaps due to the limited space or the cramped quilts, she unconsciously shifted positions and, without realizing it, wriggled her way into Qiu Luo’s arms.
Asleep, Qiu Luo didn’t find the presence of someone in her embrace at all strange. She instinctively tightened her hold, as if hugging the body pillow she used back in the modern world.
She even rubbed her chin against the top of Cheng Yu’s head, and the two of them slept peacefully.
At dawn, a little maid knocked on the door as usual, intending to wake her young mistress.
A voice responded from inside—one unfamiliar to the maid.
“Don’t disturb me.”
It was Qiu Luo, her tone laced with drowsy irritation, clearly upset at having her dream interrupted.
Xiao Miao paused with her hand still on the door, then silently turned around and walked away.
Well then, she thought, with the future daughter-in-law here, of course the young mistress will sleep in. I shouldn’t have come on time. Next time, I’ll wait till the sun is high before knocking.
Inside, Qiu Luo let out a soft grunt, instinctively hugging her “pillow” tighter and settling back into sleep.
Only, this time, that “pillow” was not an object—but Cheng Yu, who had just woken up.
Blinking in a daze, Cheng Yu froze. The scene felt all too familiar—exactly how she had woken up the previous morning.
Again, her quilt was gone, and again, she had somehow ended up in Qiu Luo’s arms.
Cheng Yu tilted her head slightly, gazing at Qiu Luo’s sleeping face, puzzled.
Is my sleeping posture really that bad? she wondered. Or is it just that I’m not used to having someone else in bed with me?
Just then, Qiu Luo’s eyes snapped open. Their gazes met, locking in a silent stare.
The moment stretched. Eventually, Cheng Yu averted her eyes and lowered her gaze, her cheek accidentally brushing against Qiu Luo’s collar.
She immediately stiffened.
That movement… definitely looked like she was snuggling.
Qiu Luo thought the same. The moment she woke and saw Cheng Yu staring at her, she’d panicked and instinctively pretended she was still half-asleep, opting to keep staring back.
You look at me? I’ll look at you.
You don’t talk? I won’t talk.
If the enemy doesn’t move, I won’t move. If the enemy does move… please don’t move so weirdly!
Why is she snuggling? Qiu Luo thought. I’m a perfectly upstanding gentlewoman! (Well, not really.)
The silence grew awkward. Qiu Luo slowly released her arms and stopped hugging the girl in her arms. “Um… I didn’t do that on purpose.”
Waking up like that was completely beyond her control. Clearly, the enemy had been the one to initiate.
Cheng Yu was tactful and gently replied, “It was probably me…”
Not entirely, though. She had no memory of doing it—it was likely her sleeping body simply sought comfort.
The awkwardness intensified.
Qiu Luo hadn’t expected Cheng Yu to be so honest and open. She felt a bit flustered. “It’s fine. We were asleep. It’s just, um… instinct. Haha.”
Instinct?
She wanted to slap her own mouth. Could she have picked a more suspicious phrase?
She’d only made things worse. At this point, she might as well die of embarrassment.
Desperate to change the subject, Qiu Luo joked, “No one would ever guess that Miss Cheng Yu sleeps like this.”
Always so aloof and hard to approach during the day… yet when she sleeps, she burrows into people’s arms. Honestly—
Adorably so.
Cheng Yu shifted slightly, now lying flat. Her eyes glimmered, and she said softly, “No one else will ever get the chance to know.”
That made Qiu Luo freeze. Wait… what?
No one else will ever get the chance?
Well, she had a point. Who else would ever share a bed with Cheng Yu—unless they were her future husband… or wife.
Qiu Luo wanted to turn her head and look at Cheng Yu’s face, to see what kind of expression accompanied those words. What kind of emotions lay behind them?
But it was as if her body refused to respond. Her thoughts raced, yet she couldn’t move or speak.
As if sensing Qiu Luo’s confusion, Cheng Yu let out a soft laugh. “Only when I marry someone will others have a chance to find out. For now, only you know about my poor sleeping habits—so don’t tell anyone, alright?”
Her words, tinged with laughter, seemed to ease the tension, even if it also sounded like she was hiding something more.
Qiu Luo, playing along, dropped the subject. “Of course. We’re contract partners and business associates, after all. Your secret is safe with me.”
She definitely wouldn’t tell a soul. Who would have the audacity to run around talking about the heroine’s… adorable sleeping habits?
“Let’s get up for breakfast,” Cheng Yu said. “I have studying to do afterward. I’ll ask Xiao Miao to see you out.”
