Transmigrated Into an Ancient Famine Novel as a Scumbag Alpha (ABO, GL) - Chapter 20
Chapter 20
The little one cautiously hugged her sister’s leg. “Sister, is Sister Ye still mad?”
Jiang Jinhuang touched Yangyang’s small face, soothing her. “How could an adult be mad at you? But from now on, don’t provoke Ye Qing.”
“Okay.” The little one nodded obediently.
“Good. Come, I’ll wipe your face, and we’ll rest early.” Jiang Jinhuang was thinking about getting up early tomorrow, still worried Ye Qing might abandon them.
The little one, unaware of her sister’s thoughts, happily clapped her hands, tilting her face up for her sister to wipe.
Seeing her sister’s cute expression, Jiang Jinhuang’s eyes finally showed a hint of a smile.
Meanwhile, Ye Qing prepared a basin of water for herself, washed her face, and soaked her feet in hot water. They were leaving tomorrow, and she recalled seeing a wheelbarrow in a courtyard before. It had a single wheel in front, two wooden supports at the back, a flat board for carrying things, and long handles for pushing, saving a lot of effort.
Fleeing meant bringing luggage, and it had to be carried openly. Keeping everything in her space would be hard to explain, especially with Jiang Jinhuang’s low favorability—she wouldn’t believe any explanation.
Sighing, Ye Qing leaned back on the bed. The apocalypse had its challenges, and this world had its own. Both were tough.
After soaking her feet longer, she poured out the water, stoked the fire in the room to keep it warm, and lay down to sleep. The room was still drafty, and without a fire, it was too cold to sleep.
The next morning, Ye Qing woke early, lingered a bit, then got up.
Since they were leaving today, Ye Qing planned a hearty meal using the two pounds of lamb she’d redeemed, paired with rice porridge for energy on the road. She also wanted to find cloth to make gloves—pushing a cart in the cold would freeze her hands otherwise.
With that, Ye Qing went out to fetch water, washed her face, and rinsed her mouth with coarse salt before starting breakfast.
Only a bit of cabbage remained. She shredded it and took out the lamb, still fresh from her space, cutting it into small pieces.
She rinsed a bowl of rice, put it in a clay pot with spiritual spring water, and started cooking.
Once the porridge was set, she heated oil, stir-fried the lamb, and added the cabbage to cook off its moisture. With soy sauce, salt, and other seasonings, the lamb and cabbage dish was soon ready.
The noise from cooking—spatula hitting the pan—was loud, waking Jiang Jinhuang.
She quickly dressed, fearing Ye Qing was eating breakfast alone and leaving without them.
The little one poked her head out from the blankets, looking confused as her sister dressed. “Sister, where are you going?”
“Stay there. I’ll be right back,” Jiang Jinhuang said, too rushed to explain. She jogged out of the bedroom toward the kitchen.
“Ye Qing?” she called while walking.
“Here. The food’s ready. I was about to call you to get up,” Ye Qing said, turning with a smile.
Jiang Jinhuang looked at Ye Qing, not seeing the scheming she expected, but she remained cautious.
“Why didn’t you wake me earlier? I could’ve helped.”
“No need. It’s just breakfast. We’ll be busy packing until noon. Go wash up. I’ll serve the food when you’re done,” Ye Qing said, smiling. She’d slept well, so her mood was good. Living here, unlike the apocalypse, meant no zombies or hostile people to fear.
“Okay, I’ll dress Yangyang first.” Jiang Jinhuang left the kitchen, glancing back every few steps, afraid Ye Qing might run off. But she knew if Ye Qing wanted to leave, she couldn’t stop her.
She jogged back to the bedroom. Opening the door, she saw the little one sitting up, already wearing her top and struggling with her pants.
Amused by Yangyang’s effort, Jiang Jinhuang laughed. “Yangyang, let me help.”
She lifted the little one onto the bed and pulled up her pants.
Yangyang explained in her babyish voice, “Sister, I know how to dress. The skirt’s just too thick.”
Jiang Jinhuang’s lips curved, humoring her. “Yes, yes, our Yangyang is the smartest and can do anything.”
“Uh-huh!” The little one nodded proudly.
After dressing her, Jiang Jinhuang set her down. “Stay here. I’ll fetch water.”
“Okay.” Full from yesterday and rested after her cry, the little one was lively again.
Jiang Jinhuang got wash water. After she and Yangyang finished, Ye Qing, timing it right, brought the porridge.
Seeing Ye Qing with food, Yangyang called sweetly, “Morning, Sister Ye.”
“Morning, Yangyang.” Ye Qing smiled, glanced at Jiang Jinhuang, and returned to the kitchen.
Jiang Jinhuang poured out the basin water and went to help in the kitchen.
Seeing Ye Qing serving the dish, Jiang Jinhuang looked into the pan and was stunned. “Where did you get meat?”
“Don’t ask. It’s legitimate. Fresh lamb. We’re leaving today, so breakfast needs to be good. Take this to the table. I’ll bring the porridge,” Ye Qing said.
“Okay.” Jiang Jinhuang took the plate, still in disbelief. Linzhou City was nearly deserted—where did Ye Qing get lamb?
But she didn’t dwell on it. Eating enough was enough in times like these, and Ye Qing clearly didn’t want to explain.
Carrying the plate, Jiang Jinhuang walked out. Ye Qing followed with the porridge in one hand and chopsticks in the other, saying, “Jinhuang, pack your and Yangyang’s things later—only what’s useful. I’ll find a cart. We’re fleeing south, and we’ll need one.”
“You’re going out?” Jiang Jinhuang turned nervously.
Ye Qing nodded. “Yes, or the bedding and pots will be too heavy to carry. We need a cart.”
Jiang Jinhuang pursed her lips, nodding after a moment, fearing Ye Qing wouldn’t return.
Seeing her silence, Ye Qing asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Jiang Jinhuang shook her head, deciding to talk after breakfast to avoid upsetting Ye Qing and losing their meal.
They entered the room. The little one, smelling the lamb, happily hugged her sister’s leg. “Sister, what’s in the plate? It smells so good.”
“It’s lamb Sister Ye found,” Jiang Jinhuang said, placing the plate on the table and picking up Yangyang.
The little one’s eyes widened. She smiled at Ye Qing. “Wow, Sister Ye is amazing!”
As long as Sister Ye didn’t sell her, she was happy, she thought.
Ye Qing smiled. “Eat up. We’re leaving today.”
“Uh-huh.” The little one nodded obediently.
Jiang Jinhuang picked up chopsticks, seeing Ye Qing already eating lamb. She fed a piece to Yangyang, who ate it eagerly.
Swinging her little legs, Yangyang praised Ye Qing. “So yummy. Sister Ye is awesome.”
“Eat more if it’s good. You need strength to travel,” Ye Qing said, smiling.
Jiang Jinhuang’s favorability was hard to raise, so Ye Qing figured starting with the little one was a strategy. She’d noticed Jiang Jinhuang cared deeply for her sister, so bonding with Yangyang could help.
“Okay, I’ll eat lots,” the little one said obediently.
