Transmigrated Into an Ancient Famine Novel as a Scumbag Alpha (ABO, GL) - Chapter 63
Chapter 63
Jiang Jinhuang chased Ye Qing and threw snowballs at her.
Ye Qing dodged nimbly and occasionally grabbed snow to throw back. She also remembered to include the little one, throwing a few snowballs at her now and then. The little one got hit repeatedly by Ye Qing’s snowballs, fell on her bottom, and sat happily in the snow.
“Yangyang, Sister will help you hit her,” Jiang Jinhuang said. She bent down and picked up two snowballs. Before she could throw them at Ye Qing, Ye Qing’s two snowballs hit Jiang Jinhuang’s chest and neck. A chill shot up Jiang Jinhuang’s neck.
Ye Qing hit her and ran. Seeing she had struck Jiang Jinhuang, she scooped up the little one and dashed off. “No more playing. Let’s go warm up by the fire!”
“Hehe, yay! Warm up!” the little one cheered, raising her hands. She had already forgotten Ye Qing hitting her with snowballs.
Jiang Jinhuang, annoyed, threw two snowballs at Ye Qing from behind. One missed, but the other hit Ye Qing’s back.
Ye Qing turned and grinned at her, then happily carried the little one back to the temple.
Jiang Jinhuang brushed the snow off herself and muttered, “Childish.”
Though she called it childish, her lips curved slightly upward. Back in the capital, she often saw snowy days. As the daughter of the Minister of Rites, she always had to mind her manners. She had never been as carefree as today.
In past years, she admired snow while sipping tea with other noble ladies from the capital. She had never played recklessly in the snow like today. If her family saw this, they wouldn’t believe she could do such things.
Jiang Jinhuang shook her head, chuckling. Though she still missed home, she felt this life wasn’t so bad either.
After thinking for a moment, Jiang Jinhuang bent down and formed a small snowball in her right hand. She walked slowly back to the temple, closing the door behind her. Seeing Ye Qing had brushed the snow off the little one, Yangyang’s eyes curved happily.
Jiang Jinhuang walked to them and glared at Ye Qing. Then, she listed their faults. “Yangyang, didn’t I tell you to behave? Why are you covered in snow?”
“Hehe, it’s fun!” the little one said, acting cute with Jiang Jinhuang.
Jiang Jinhuang looked at Ye Qing. “Didn’t I say to play with Yangyang for a bit and come back? Why did you start playing too?”
“I was just keeping Yangyang company. Besides, didn’t you play too?” Ye Qing muttered softly.
The little one nodded in agreement. “Yeah, Sister, you played too.”
Jiang Jinhuang pinched the little one’s face and teased, “Little rascal, you’re siding with Ye Qing now, not me.”
“Hehe, I side with whoever plays with me!” the little one declared boldly.
Ye Qing burst out laughing beside them. She gave the little one a thumbs-up. Jiang Jinhuang glared at her. Taking advantage of Ye Qing’s lack of guard, she stuffed the small snowball down Ye Qing’s neck with her left hand.
“Hiss, a sneak attack?” Ye Qing shivered from the cold and quickly shook the snow off her neck. She looked at Jiang Jinhuang, feeling wronged.
Jiang Jinhuang smiled politely at her but spoke less politely. “Serves you right for messing around with Yangyang.”
“Tch, you had fun too, didn’t you?” Ye Qing muttered quietly.
“What did you say?” Jiang Jinhuang looked at the muttering Ye Qing and raised an eyebrow.
Ye Qing gave her an awkward laugh. “Nothing, hehe. I’m taking Yangyang to dry her clothes.”
Ye Qing led the little one to sit by the fire to dry her clothes. The little one, fresh from playing in the snow, bounced around excitedly beside Ye Qing.
Jiang Jinhuang finally looked away, satisfied. She found it amusing. She now dared to talk to Ye Qing like this. Once, she and Yangyang feared Ye Qing. Were these two completely different Ye Qings really the same person?
Jiang Jinhuang didn’t dare think further. Ye Qing had too many secrets. She feared knowing too much would cross a line. So, when Ye Qing took things out, she usually pretended not to notice. If Ye Qing didn’t want to reveal it, she wouldn’t expose her.
Jiang Jinhuang stopped thinking and walked to Ye Qing and the little one. They sat together by the fire to warm up.
Since they ate heartily in the morning and weren’t traveling today, they weren’t hungry. Ye Qing decided to skip lunch and prepare dinner when the sun was about to set.
She thought for a moment and looked at Jiang Jinhuang. “You didn’t sleep much last night. Go rest. I’ll watch Yangyang.”
Jiang Jinhuang was indeed tired. She didn’t refuse and instructed, “The snow’s getting heavier. You two don’t go out to play, got it?”
Ye Qing nodded. “Don’t worry.”
The little one nodded innocently too, then snuggled up to Ye Qing, acting cute.
Jiang Jinhuang looked at the big and small pair helplessly and lay down to sleep.
The little one stayed quietly by Ye Qing’s side for a while. Seeing her sister asleep, she tugged Ye Qing’s arm and acted cute. “Sister Ye, you’re the best. Take me out to play.”
Ye Qing smiled and shook her head playfully. “No way. Your sister just said you can’t go out.”
“But I want to. Sister Ye, you’re the best and the greatest. Sister and I like you the most!” the little one said.
When the little one flattered, she included her sister. Ye Qing burst out laughing.
Seeing Ye Qing laugh, the little one pressed on. “Sister Ye, can I go play now?”
“No, or you’ll really get sick. The snow’s getting heavier,” Ye Qing refused.
The little one looked at Ye Qing, pouting. Her little face scrunched up like a bitter melon.
Ye Qing laughed at the little one’s expression. She wouldn’t let Yangyang go out, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t play with snow.
Ye Qing pinched Yangyang’s face. “Wait. We can play with snow without going out.”
The little one’s eyes lit up. She sat obediently, waiting for Ye Qing.
Ye Qing took a wooden basin from the side. She went to the temple door, filled the basin with snow, and quickly closed the door.
She brought the snow to a spot not too far or close to the fire. The little one couldn’t wait. She ran over, saw the basin of snow, and got thrilled.
“Sister Ye is so awesome!” the little one said. She started playing with the snow in her hands.
Ye Qing instructed, “Only play for a bit, or your hands will get too cold, got it?”
The little one nodded immediately. “Got it.”
She played happily, shaping small animals with the snow one moment and tossing it around the next.
When she felt cold, she returned to the fire to warm up.
When Jiang Jinhuang woke up, she saw the big and small pair warming by the fire, looking very well-behaved.
Her gaze landed on them, finally settling on Ye Qing. “You go sleep too. We can’t leave for a few days. Rest up and regain your energy.”
She then looked at the little one. “Yangyang, want to sleep too?”
The little one nodded obediently. She had played most of the day and was indeed tired.
Ye Qing took the little one to sleep in the quilts. Soon, both fell asleep. Jiang Jinhuang watched the fire. With the fire, the temple was much warmer than outside.
Midway, Song Zhao woke once. Jiang Jinhuang saw her awake and walked over. “Want some water?”
“Thank you, Madam,” Song Zhao said. She was indeed thirsty but felt it was too bold to have her Master’s wife feed her water. She added, “Just pour me a bowl. I’ll drink it myself.”
Jiang Jinhuang felt awkward being called Madam and said, “Call me by my name, Jiang Jinhuang.”
“How can that be? You’re Master’s wife. I can’t call you by your name,” Song Zhao said, feeling it was improper.
“It doesn’t matter. Ye Qing and I don’t care about such things. Drink first, and don’t move. You might reopen your wounds,” Jiang Jinhuang said. She fed Song Zhao water with a porcelain spoon.
Song Zhao was truly thirsty. She drank most of the bowl before stopping. Since Jiang Jinhuang didn’t like being called Madam, she changed her address. “Thank you, Miss Jiang, for helping me.”
“It’s no big deal. Keep resting,” Jiang Jinhuang said. Seeing Song Zhao had no other needs, she returned to the fire.
When the sun was nearly setting, Ye Qing woke up. She stretched and looked outside. Seeing the sky had darkened, she got up quickly. “I slept this late?”
“No harm. We’re not traveling. Sleeping more is fine,” Jiang Jinhuang said, looking at Ye Qing.
“True. Let me think about what to eat tonight,” Ye Qing said. She moved to the fire to warm up and mentally checked the food in her space.
Before, they had too little food to eat freely. Now, they had so much she didn’t know where to start.
Ye Qing found herself amusing. She scanned her space mentally. The chickens could lay eggs, and she didn’t want to kill them yet. The two cows were the same. She had the most horses. Besides the one they used, she had 34 left. The horses in the space needed soybeans and grass to eat. Since they weren’t leaving for a few days, Ye Qing thought about killing a horse and storing the meat in the space to eat slowly.
But it was too late now. Ye Qing decided to do it tomorrow morning. She planned a lighter dinner: stir-fried potato strips and cabbage-egg noodle soup.
Thinking this, Ye Qing stood up to get the ingredients. Jiang Jinhuang didn’t bother asking. When Ye Qing brought the ingredients, Jiang Jinhuang asked, “What are we making tonight?”
“Stir-fry some potato strips and make cabbage-egg noodle soup,” Ye Qing explained.
Jiang Jinhuang nodded. “Alright, let’s split the work.”
“Good,” Ye Qing nodded too.
So, Jiang Jinhuang stir-fried potato strips in the iron pot. Ye Qing used the clay pot to make cabbage-egg noodle soup. Since the eggs in the soup would break apart, Ye Qing used only two eggs, scrambled them, added noodle pieces, seasoned with spices, and then added cabbage to cook together. This would balance nutrition.
Jiang Jinhuang found it remarkable. While others struggled to eat, they were stir-frying vegetables and making noodle pieces. But this life was possible because of Ye Qing.
Thinking this, Jiang Jinhuang looked at Ye Qing. Her lips curved slightly, and she smiled faintly.
