- Chapter 13 - An Unexpected Encounter with a Zombie
Chen Tao looked in confusion at the unusually strange Han Xuejin. Despite her worry, what she wanted most in that moment was to hold her precious daughter.
Just as Chen Tao opened her arms to hug Zhu Changxuan, Han Xuejin suddenly pushed Changxuan aside and stepped forward herself. She wrapped her arms around Chen Tao’s slender waist and rested her head gently on her shoulder.
Zhu Changxuan stood there in silence.
Her heart felt like it was bleeding. She had finally built up the courage to confess her feelings, only for things to end up like this. The relationship had not even started, and she had already been dumped.
But what shocked her the most was that Han Xuejin liked her mother? How could the world fall into such chaos?
Zhu Changxuan stared at the two of them hugging, feeling utterly wronged.
“Xuejin, what’s going on with you?” Chen Tao asked with a puzzled expression.
Han Xuejin let go of her and looked up at her with sparkling eyes. “I just missed you so much.”
Chen Tao opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say. Then she noticed Zhu Changxuan’s aura and her eyes widened in surprise.
“Wait, why are you an omega now?”
She was not born that way. It had only been half a year since they last met. Had her gender changed?
Zhu Changxuan forced a small smile and tried to hold back her sadness. “It’s not permanent. I took a pill that altered my pheromones. It should wear off by tonight.”
Han Xuejin pouted and spoke in a soft, hurt tone. “Sister, why do you keep looking at her and not care about me?”
Zhu Changxuan’s face darkened even more.
Chen Tao felt a shiver run down her spine. “Are you possessed or something?”
Just then, Sui Sheng suddenly shouted.
“Ah, I remember now! It must have been that demonic cultivator from earlier. She gave our mistress a Love-binding Pill!”
Chen Tao’s eyes widened. “A Love-binding Pill?”
She thought back to Han Xuejin’s strange behavior and suddenly everything clicked. But then she glanced at Sui Sheng and hesitated.
“This chicken? Is it talking?”
Sui Sheng puffed up in anger. “How dare you! I am Master Sui Sheng, descendant of the ancient phoenix bloodline.”
Chen Tao blinked. “Is that so?” She still wasn’t sure if it was not just a chicken.
Zhu Changxuan, still confused, asked, “What is a Love-binding Pill?”
Sui Sheng proudly explained, “It is the core of a Fated-Beast. Whoever consumes it will fall deeply in love with the first person they see.”
So that was the reason. Han Xuejin did not actually love her mother. Most of the gloom in Zhu Changxuan’s heart faded.
“What do we do now? Is there a way to remove the effects?”
Sui Sheng looked troubled. “It’s difficult. You need a special antidote made using the bl00d essence of that same Fated-Beast. But the problem is, we don’t know if the person who gave her the pill ever collected that essence in the first place.”
Zhu Changxuan looked worried. “What if she didn’t? What then?”
Sui Sheng replied thoughtfully, “There is another method, or so the stories say.”
“What is it?” Zhu Changxuan asked quickly.
Sui Sheng lowered its voice awkwardly. “Hehe. I forgot.”
Zhu Changxuan stared blankly.
Seeing that Zhu Changxuan looked healthy and well, Chen Tao felt more at ease.
She and her husband had often been away and only knew that their daughter was usually distant and quiet. She never seemed cheerful unless they were around. But now, she looked so much livelier. It must be thanks to Han Xuejin. It seemed their decision to arrange the engagement had been the right one after all.
Chen Tao gently reassured her daughter. “Don’t worry. Your father went after that demonic cultivator. He will definitely catch her.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Zhu Shijing returned on his sword. “Sigh, she got away.”
Chen Tao twitched at the corners of her mouth. She silently wished he had stayed away instead.
Zhu Changxuan said nothing.
“Let me take a look at my precious daughter,” Zhu Shijing said excitedly. He stepped forward and grabbed Zhu Changxuan’s shoulders, carefully examining her.
“Wait, why are you an omega now?”
Zhu Changxuan sighed and repeated her explanation again.
“Haha, I see. As long as you’re alright, that’s what matters.”
After checking her condition, Zhu Shijing was pleasantly surprised.
“This is great. Xuan’er, since you’ve been out on your own, your health has improved a lot. What happened?”
Before anyone could answer, Sui Sheng leapt forward proudly, trying to gain attention.
Zhu Shijing turned to Han Xuejin with a pleased expression. “So it’s all thanks to you, Xuejin.”
Sui Sheng muttered to itself in frustration. “What about me…”
Han Xuejin gave Zhu Shijing a cold glance. “Hmm.”
Then she turned to Chen Tao with a bright smile. “Sister, are you hungry? Would you like to eat something and then rest together?”
Chen Tao was taken aback by her enthusiasm. She looked a little awkward. “Well…”
Resting together? Even though she now knew the reason behind Han Xuejin’s behavior, Zhu Changxuan still felt unhappy and pouted quietly.
When Zhu Shijing heard Han Xuejin calling his wife “Sister,” he was both surprised and amused.
“Hahaha, just half a year apart and Xuejin’s become so sweet with words. Does that mean I’ll be ‘Brother’ now too?”
Han Xuejin looked at him without expression. “Uncle, are you so hungry you’re talking nonsense? I really don’t understand what Sister ever saw in you.”
She then clung to Chen Tao’s arm and, in a delicate voice, asked, “Sister, when will you dump him?”
Zhu Shijing’s smile froze, and his face turned completely dark.
Zhu Changxuan stared at Han Xuejin with pleading eyes.
Chen Tao looked troubled while Sui Sheng could no longer hold in its laughter. Its wings trembled from laughing too hard.
After learning the truth behind everything, Zhu Shijing’s mood did not improve.
Someone was clinging to his wife right in front of him. He could not hit her. Yelling would only make him seem immature. It was incredibly frustrating. All he could do was wave his fan furiously to cool himself down.
Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao decided to track down the demonic cultivator first, find out whether she had the Fated-Beast’s bl00d, and then return to Xuantian Sect to report everything.
The whole family went to Tianman’s most famous inn. Chen Tao sat between Zhu Shijing and Han Xuejin, while Zhu Changxuan sat alone on the opposite side of the table.
Inside the private room, the waiter served the beautifully arranged dishes with a wide grin before politely leaving. He did not dare interrupt, though he was quietly curious about the group’s strange dynamic.
Originally, Zhu Shijing had planned to ask the girls what had happened while they were away, but…
“Sister, come on, say ah. Try this braised lion’s head meatball. The fatty part is rich but not greasy, and the lean part is tender and juicy.”
Chen Tao picked up a bowl to take the meatball Han Xuejin was trying to feed her.
She smiled helplessly and said, “I can feed myself, thank you.”
Zhu Shijing could no longer hold it in. He immediately leaned on Chen Tao’s arm and whined, “Darling, I want some too. Feed me, please.” He deliberately said “darling” with extra emphasis.
Chen Tao looked at him with affection and placed a meatball in his bowl. “Alright, here you go. Eat it yourself.”
Han Xuejin was clearly unhappy. She clung to Chen Tao’s other arm and said, “Sister, earlier when I gave you some meat, your husband didn’t get mad, did he? Unlike him, I only want to care for you.”
Zhu Shijing was so angry that he snapped his chopsticks in half.
Seeing this, Han Xuejin shrank back in fear. “Sister, your husband is really scary.”
Chen Tao was at a loss for words. She didn’t know how to deal with the situation.
Zhu Changxuan had already given up and was quietly focused on her food, pretending not to notice anything.
Later that evening, after a heated argument between Zhu Shijing and Han Xuejin, Chen Tao made a decision. She booked four rooms, one for each person. That would settle things.
Zhu Changxuan felt heavy-hearted. There were four people, yet she felt like she didn’t even exist.
Sui Sheng looked over at her and thought, “We are the same.”
In the middle of the night, Zhu Changxuan got up to use the restroom. As she walked near the latrine, she saw a familiar figure waving at her.
It was Fan Nimei.
Zhu Changxuan froze, and before she could react, Fan Nimei flew to her side in an instant.
Fan Nimei suddenly caught a whiff of Zhu Changxuan’s pheromones and stared at her in shock. “Why do you smell like an alpha?”
Zhu Changxuan was caught off guard and didn’t know how to respond. “Well, I… this…”
Fan Nimei’s eyes filled with tears and anger. “You lied to me.”
She realized that Zhu Changxuan was traveling with powerful cultivators, so she quickly cast a spell to knock her unconscious.
Fan Nimei then brought her to the forest outside the city. Once there, she woke her up.
When Zhu Changxuan opened her eyes, she saw Fan Nimei’s furious face looming over her.
She quickly explained, “I didn’t want to lie to you. It was Si Chou. She told me to do it.”
Fan Nimei’s rage flared. “So you and Si Chou worked together to deceive me? Then choose how you want to die. That is the kindest thing I can offer you.”
Zhu Changxuan gasped. “Wait…”
Before Fan Nimei could strike, a voice rang out from above.
“If you want her dead, you’ll have to go through me first.”
Si Chou landed in front of them.
Fan Nimei glared at her. “Then I’ll make sure you suffer first.”
She unleashed the full power of the Moji Jade and cast her strongest illusion spell.
Si Chou tried to resist it, but the spell still affected her. Her head became dizzy and her body started to sway.
Zhu Changxuan rushed forward and shouted, “Hey, Si Chou, don’t fall now.”
In that crucial moment, Si Chou created a protective barrier around the two of them and sat down to meditate and stabilize her energy.
Fan Nimei had cast the illusion on both of them, but for some reason, Zhu Changxuan was barely affected. Instead, she found herself entering Si Chou’s spiritual sea.
Inside the vision, she saw a small, rundown house. A young girl, about seven or eight years old, stood protectively in front of a collapsed woman.
A group of villagers in ragged clothes had surrounded them.
One man shouted loudly, “You little monster, die. Die. Die.”
The child cried but glared at them with anger in her eyes. Her violet pupils were so intense that the villagers stepped back in fear.
Realizing they were intimidated by a child, a few men rushed forward to grab her.
Another shouted, “Tie her up and throw her in the river.”
The girl looked desperately at her unconscious mother. Her head had been struck by a wooden stick. Bl00d pooled beneath her, and she was no longer breathing.
Zhu Changxuan tried to step in and stop them but realized that her body passed right through the child. No one could see her.
She looked down at her own transparent form, then at the girl’s violet eyes. Suddenly, she understood. This little girl was Si Chou.
Was this a memory from her childhood? Zhu Changxuan frowned deeply and clenched her fists in anger.
Suddenly, a strong wind blew through the crowd. The villagers were knocked over. A woman appeared out of nowhere and grabbed the girl.
“This child is mine now,” she said arrogantly, then flew away on her sword with the girl in her arms.
The vision shifted.
Now a black-robed girl stood in the village. It was Si Chou.
Her face was emotionless, but her eyes were filled with hatred as she stared at the familiar villagers.
“Seven years ago, you called me a monster and killed my mother. Today, I will take your lives.”
She raised her hand and cast a powerful spell. Flames erupted across the village.
Screams filled the night air. Zhu Changxuan shut her eyes.
When she opened them again, she saw Si Chou still sitting cross-legged on the ground, her brow tightly furrowed in pain. The barrier had not yet been broken.
Zhu Changxuan didn’t know what to do.
Outside the barrier, Fan Nimei looked at the two of them. Her rage had mostly faded. The backlash from using the Moji Jade so many times finally hit her. She clutched her chest in discomfort.
She looked at Zhu Changxuan and said quietly, “For the sake of the feelings I once had for you, I’ll let you go. But from now on, stay out of my sight.”
Zhu Changxuan had no response.
Fan Nimei did not undo the illusion spell cast on Si Chou. But even without her interference, Si Chou would probably be able to break through it before sunrise.
As Fan Nimei turned to leave, a strange thought crossed her mind.
Why had Zhu Changxuan woken up so quickly?
More than an hour had passed. Si Chou’s barrier had disappeared, but she still had not woken up. Although Zhu Changxuan was exhausted, she stayed wide awake, too nervous to sleep.
The forest at night was terrifying. Luckily, the moonlight was fairly bright. Suddenly, there was a rustling sound nearby.
Zhu Changxuan swallowed hard and looked carefully in that direction. To her horror, she saw a few staggering, zombie-like corpses with twisted, grotesque faces slowly approaching.
She screamed in fear, “Oh my god, zombies!”
She shook Si Chou with all her strength, but Si Chou didn’t wake up. Instead, her body fell limply to the ground.
In truth, Si Chou was already aware of the outside world. She was only one step away from breaking through the illusion and waking up.
She also knew what was happening outside, but no matter how anxious she felt, she couldn’t act yet.
She had heard rumors that someone had been experimenting with corpses recently in Tianman City, but she never expected to encounter them in this condition. Just her luck.
She figured Zhu Changxuan would probably run away on her own, though she would likely get bitten a few times first. Getting infected by corpse poison while unguarded would definitely harm her cultivation.
She never imagined that she, a dignified Right Protector of the Demon Lord, would fall to such a pathetic state.
But to her surprise, Zhu Changxuan, seeing how slowly the zombies moved, mustered every bit of strength she had to lift Si Chou into her arms and took off running.
As she ran, she kept complaining. “Wake up already! And why are you so heavy!” But no matter what, she didn’t leave Si Chou behind.
Si Chou froze for a moment. Other than her mother and the Demon Lord himself, no one had ever helped her like this without expecting something in return.
When she was born, the villagers had called her a monster because of her unusual eyes. Even her alpha parent had abandoned her. Only her mother had struggled to raise her, always saying her eyes were the most beautiful in the world.
Zhu Changxuan ran as fast as she could, panting heavily, almost out of breath. She felt like she was using every ounce of strength she had in her entire life.
Si Chou thought to herself, “Zhu Changxuan, you fool. If you just left me behind, you’d run much faster.”
Then, in a moment of distraction, Zhu Changxuan tripped and fell.
Si Chou tumbled along with her, rolling several times before her head hit the base of a tree with a heavy thud. The sound made Zhu Changxuan panic. She immediately crawled over, apologizing frantically.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. Are you okay?”
She turned her head and saw the zombies still approaching, their bodies twisting unnaturally as they moved closer.
“I can’t carry you anymore. I’ll have to drag you. It might be faster that way,” she said urgently.
Grabbing Si Chou by the ankles, she began dragging her across the ground at top speed.
As she fled, she still found time to mutter to Si Chou, trying to comfort her.
“Good thing you’re wearing black. It won’t look that dirty.”
Si Chou, still semi-conscious, thought silently, “Give me back the emotion I just felt. Ever since I met you, haven’t things just gotten worse for me?”
As dawn began to break, the zombies suddenly seemed to respond to a silent call from somewhere in the distance. They turned around and began walking away, eventually disappearing into the trees.
Zhu Changxuan watched as they vanished. She finally collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.
“We’re safe…”
Not long after, Si Chou finally woke up.
Zhu Changxuan immediately hugged her tightly, overcome with emotion.
“Thank goodness, you’re awake,” she said, her voice trembling. Then she looked at Si Chou, full of concern.
“About your childhood…”
“Enough. You don’t have to say anything,” Si Chou replied quietly as she brushed some dry leaves from her hair.
Zhu Changxuan didn’t know how to respond, so she simply hugged her tighter.
Si Chou was still weak from the illusion. She tried to push Zhu Changxuan away, but her arms had no strength.
“Hey, that’s enough already. Let me go.”
“No. I won’t let go.”
Si Chou fell silent.
The two of them kept struggling, tugging at each other. Their clothes were getting messier and more undone.
Suddenly, a voice shouted from nearby.
“I knew there was something going on between you two. And you said you didn’t like alphas anymore!”
It was Song Yidao. Her voice was loud and full of accusation.
Si Chou nearly rolled her eyes. “No, it’s not what it looks like. You misunderstood.”
Song Yidao looked furious. “Misunderstood? I only believe what I see with my own eyes.”
Zhu Changxuan and Si Chou looked at each other. Their clothes were a mess. They were still holding onto each other tightly.
Zhu Changxuan, especially, was wearing a thin, plain robe. After being dragged out by Fan Nimei and all the struggling just now, most of her pale shoulder was exposed. The sight was enough to make anyone imagine the wrong thing.
