- Chapter 16 - The Choice
After leaving the cave, Zhu Changxuan initially planned to go find Zhu Shijing and the others.
But Han Xuejin suddenly sensed a trace of dark energy in the air. It was the same as what she had felt on the zombies earlier.
Hua Yue sensed it as well and looked surprised.
“I can’t believe someone is still practicing corpse refinement. That kind of magic is forbidden.”
Then, with a spark of interest, she said eagerly, “Let’s go check it out.”
Zhu Changxuan hesitated. “Isn’t it dangerous?”
Hua Yue patted her shoulder confidently. “Don’t worry. I’m very strong.”
Zhu Changxuan looked skeptical. “Are you sure?”
Han Xuejin turned to her and said with calm certainty, “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Zhu Changxuan’s heart skipped a beat. Her cheeks flushed. That was too cool.
Seeing Zhu Changxuan’s expression, Hua Yue covered her mouth and giggled.
Han Xuejin shot her a sharp glare. Hua Yue immediately cleared her throat and straightened her posture.
“Let’s go.”
The three of them headed toward the source of the zombie aura.
But just as they approached, an alpha man appeared out of nowhere and launched a surprise attack on Hua Yue.
Several agile zombies also charged at Zhu Changxuan and Han Xuejin.
Han Xuejin quickly pulled Zhu Changxuan back and dodged the strike.
Hua Yue reacted just in time to block the man’s first blow.
However, his strength was far beyond what she expected. Hua Yue was sent flying and landed hard on the ground.
“Ouch! My backside.”
Though she wasn’t badly hurt, she got up quickly, hands on her hips, and shouted angrily, “You coward! Attacking out of nowhere! You must be the one behind all this corpse refining.”
Zhu Changxuan couldn’t help thinking it sounded more like cursing than fighting. She was starting to doubt Hua Yue’s reliability again.
The man, Lian Li, sneered at her with contempt.
“So what if I am? Now that you’ve found this place, none of you are leaving alive. I’ll use your bodies to craft even stronger zombies.”
Han Xuejin responded instantly with an ice spell, freezing several of the zombies in place.
She stared at them coldly. In her previous life, she had heard rumors that a zombie king had once appeared in Tianman City, slaughtering thousands. Its strength was said to rival even a cultivator in the Divided Spirit stage.
Whether the rumors were true or not, she never found out. She had died soon after, in a final battle with the so-called righteous sects.
If a zombie king really existed and was connected to this man, then he was more dangerous than she had imagined.
She narrowed her eyes and asked, “What are you doing with these zombies? Why make them jump off a cliff?”
Lian Li’s gaze darkened. These two were clearly not easy to deal with.
But he remained arrogant. “If I could turn every cultivator in this world into a zombie, strong and obedient to me, wouldn’t this entire cultivation realm belong to me?”
Then he muttered to himself in irritation. “Useless corpses. Wandering off again. Dead things never have brains.”
Han Xuejin felt like she had just wasted her breath asking.
Hua Yue burst into laughter.
Zhu Changxuan stood speechless. Zombies were not part of the original story at all.
Lian Li glared and suddenly flew forward to attack Hua Yue again.
To her surprise, the man fought her evenly. In fact, he was slightly overpowering her.
He then summoned more zombies to join the fight.
Han Xuejin couldn’t go all out because she was still protecting Zhu Changxuan.
What made things worse was that the zombies were hard to injure. Ordinary weapons were useless against them.
Even attacks from the Thousand Break Sword only caused superficial wounds. The zombies felt no pain, and even if their arms were sliced off, they continued to charge forward.
Unlike humans, zombies did not rely on qi or spiritual pressure. They were already dead and enhanced by forbidden spells, making normal magic ineffective.
The only thing that worked was Han Xuejin’s ice spell. She used it to freeze them, then followed with her Wujigong technique, infiltrating their bodies and shattering them from within.
Her eyes lit up. That method worked.
Lian Li noticed and was furious. He summoned even more zombies to overwhelm them.
Zhu Changxuan watched Han Xuejin defending her and felt a deep pain in her chest. She did not want to just stand behind her and be protected. She wanted to fight beside her.
She now felt an even stronger desire to train and become stronger.
Lian Li gritted his teeth. These two were much harder to deal with than he expected.
Suddenly, two figures descended from the sky.
It was Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao. They had felt the immense disturbance and rushed over.
Zhu Changxuan called out with joy, “Father! Mother!”
Lian Li’s expression darkened. He was already struggling with Han Xuejin and Hua Yue. Now, two more powerful cultivators had joined the battle. This was bad.
He quickly summoned more zombies to cover his retreat, then activated an air-escape talisman and vanished.
Before leaving, he gave the group one last hateful glare.
He would not forget this humiliation.
The others spent some time clearing out the remaining zombies.
When it was over, Han Xuejin stepped forward, bowed slightly, and said politely, “Elder Zhu. Elder Chen.”
Zhu Shijing’s face lit up when he heard how she addressed them. At last, he no longer had to deal with someone stealing his wife and being unable to fight back.
He smiled with deep satisfaction.
“Ah, you’re back to normal. That’s wonderful, Snowjin.”
Han Xuejin looked down slightly, remembering the foolish things she had done while affected by the pill. She felt a little embarrassed.
“Yes. Sorry for the trouble.”
Chen Tao then turned to Hua Yue and asked, “And who might this be?”
Before Han Xuejin could answer, Hua Yue stepped forward with a bright smile and said, “I’m your in-law, Hua Yue. You may have heard of me.”
Chen Tao stood still for a moment, confused. Then she turned to Han Xuejin with a questioning look in her eyes.
Han Xuejin could tell that Chen Tao did not quite believe it, so she calmly explained,
“I’m sorry to say, but it’s true. She really is my biological mother.”
Chen Tao paused, then replied flatly,
“I see.”
Zhu Shijing, however, smiled apologetically and said,
“Forgive us, in-law. My wife and I are often away handling… personal matters. We’ve never really paid attention to the affairs of the cultivation world. I must admit with some shame, we’ve never heard your name before. May I ask which sect you are affiliated with?”
Hua Yue froze for a moment.
“Um… well…”
Now she did not know how to answer.
Zhu Shijing continued,
“Still, why are you only appearing now? Is there some kind of reason?”
Hua Yue replied, clearly trying to redirect,
“I… well, I just realized I never asked where the two of you are from, or how I should address you.”
Zhu Shijing responded easily,
“I’m Zhu Shijing, an elder of the Xuantian Sect. This is my wife, Chen Tao, also an elder of the same sect.”
Hua Yue looked surprised.
So they were the Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao—cultivation legends, a couple whose names had once echoed even into the darker corners of the world. She had heard of them before, powerful but known to remain neutral in most conflicts.
She had never seen them during the time she was hunted by the righteous sects, which made sense now. And to think that Zhu Changxuan turned out to be such a catch.
Putting on her most serious tone, Hua Yue gave a rare polite smile.
“So you’re the famed elders of Xuantian Sect. A pleasure to finally meet you both.”
Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao nodded in acknowledgment.
Zhu Shijing then asked,
“By the way, Fellow Daoist Hua, you haven’t introduced yourself yet. Also, where is your partner? I would like to meet our other in-law as well.”
Hua Yue stiffened. She had almost forgotten—her partner was none other than the Demon Lord Han Ying.
She glanced quickly toward Han Xuejin and Zhu Changxuan, silently asking for help.
Han Xuejin knew there was no point in hiding it. She spoke up.
“My other mother is Han Ying… the Demon Lord.”
She looked directly at Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao, her expression firm.
“But even though one of my parents is from the demon realm, the two of you feel more like true family to me. And Zhu Changxuan is the most important person in my life.”
Hua Yue blinked. Hearing her daughter say something like that right in front of her stung a little, but she could not deny it. She felt ashamed.
Zhu Changxuan covered her mouth and looked at Han Xuejin, touched.
She thought, Seriously, how many times in one day can she make my heart flutter like this? I’m going to run out of feelings.
Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao were not the kind of cultivators who blindly hated demonkind.
In fact, they had deliberately stayed out of the endless battles between so-called righteous and demonic factions because they believed such conflict only bred more bloodshed and hatred.
Their philosophy had always been simple: if others did not cross them, they would not cause trouble in return.
Zhu Shijing nodded slowly.
“We understand. We don’t care whether you’re the daughter of the Demon Lord or not. What matters to us is how you feel about Changxuan. And since you’ve made that clear, we will support you.”
Chen Tao nodded in agreement.
Zhu Changxuan quietly thought to herself,
The original version of me really did have amazing parents.
Han Xuejin looked at them, her expression softening.
“Thank you.”
Zhu Shijing smiled.
“There’s no need to thank us. We’re family.”
Hua Yue beamed.
“Wonderful. Then why don’t Snowjin and Changxuan come with me to the demon realm? You can finally meet Han Ying.”
Zhu Shijing frowned slightly.
“I think it would be better for them to return to Xuantian Sect first. They have things to take care of, and it’s their home. Much better than the demon realm, and who knows how the Demon Lord might treat Changxuan…”
Hua Yue crossed her arms.
“What’s wrong with the demon realm? It could be their home too. Don’t judge Han Ying just because she’s a Demon Lord. She’s actually very reasonable.”
She conveniently forgot how she herself used to dislike the environment there.
What had just been a polite conversation now suddenly grew tense.
Han Xuejin remained silent.
Zhu Changxuan was equally frozen.
Chen Tao glanced between them, then calmly asked,
“Well then. What do you two think?”
Both sets of eyes turned toward Han Xuejin and Zhu Changxuan.
Han Xuejin looked gently at Zhu Changxuan.
“Where do you want to go?”
Zhu Shijing narrowed his eyes slightly.
He thought, are you seriously tossing this decision at her right now?
Zhu Changxuan looked between her parents and Han Xuejin, struggling under the weight of everyone’s expectations.
“I… um… how about we just don’t go… to either place?”
Zhu Shijing fell silent.
Hua Yue blinked in disbelief.
The silence that followed was loud.
