- Chapter 5 - Pretty Boy
The first rays of morning sunlight slipped through the narrow, shadowy cave entrance.
Sui Sheng shook out her wings and stood up.
Han Xuejin was still meditating.
The moment Sui Sheng woke up, she couldn’t help clucking nonstop. Every morning, her first task was to warm up her voice.
Just as Han Xuejin was about to tell her to quiet down, she noticed something unexpected. The person lying beside her was starting to move.
Zhu Changxuan stirred with effort, feeling as though she had slept for a long time.
“Mmm…”
She pushed herself up with her hands, glanced around the unfamiliar cave, and blinked.
“Eh? I’m not dead?”
She even felt better than the day before. The pain in her chest had disappeared.
When her eyes finally landed on the person sitting nearby, she realized it was the female lead.
Zhu Changxuan immediately guessed that Han Xuejin must have saved her and brought her to safety.
“You saved me!” Zhu Changxuan’s eyes sparkled with gratitude as she looked at Han Xuejin.
Han Xuejin was slightly unsettled as she looked at that mesmerizing face. Those delicate features could charm anyone, and this person was her nominal fiancée after all.
Before she could say anything, Sui Sheng jumped in loudly.
“Pretty boy, it was thanks to the thousand-year spirit pill I produced that you survived. You should be properly thanking me and my master.”
Han Xuejin’s expression darkened slightly when she heard Sui Sheng call Zhu Changxuan a pretty boy.
But Zhu Changxuan didn’t seem offended. In fact, her eyes lit up as she stared in amazement at the chicken.
“You… the chicken can talk?”
She grabbed Han Xuejin’s arm excitedly and shook it.
“A chicken! It talks!”
Sui Sheng was speechless.
Han Xuejin had nothing to say either.
Zhu Changxuan quickly got up, ran over to Sui Sheng, squatted down, cupped her plump belly with one hand, and gently stroked her back with the other.
She smiled brightly.
“So cute!”
Sui Sheng was about to peck those disrespectful hands, but when she heard the compliment, her pride flared up. She lifted her head smugly and forgave the offense.
Zhu Changxuan could not resist. She scooped up the fat little hen and began cuddling her affectionately.
“What an adorable little chubby chicken. I love these so-ugly-it’s-cute kinds of creatures the most.”
Sui Sheng was instantly enraged. Her crest turned a deeper red from fury.
She flailed her claws, struggling in her arms.
“You pretty boy, calling me a chicken and ugly over and over. Do you think someone like you, living off your omega’s resources, has any right to insult me? I am furious. Let me go. I said let me go!”
Since Sui Sheng was struggling so much, Zhu Changxuan had no choice but to release her, looking disappointed.
“Alright, alright. I’ll let you go.”
Han Xuejin kept a straight face, unsure what to say. Cute? Was she really talking about this dirt-colored chicken?
After thinking for a moment, she finally asked,
“How are you feeling now?”
Zhu Changxuan turned to face the woman, her voice clear and pleasant. She smiled warmly.
“I feel much better. Thank you.”
Sunlight fell across her back, casting a soft glow around her. It was the first time Han Xuejin had seen Zhu Changxuan smile like that. The lightness in her expression made Han Xuejin’s ears redden slightly.
She looked away awkwardly, avoiding Zhu Changxuan’s gaze, and mumbled,
“You’re welcome.”
Suddenly, Zhu Changxuan seemed to recall something. With some hesitation, she asked,
“This chicken… is it Sui Sheng, the sparrow?”
Han Xuejin glanced at Sui Sheng and gave a faint nod.
Sui Sheng stomped her feet in frustration but didn’t dare fly over to peck the alpha.
“You called me a chicken again!”
Zhu Changxuan ignored the outburst and lowered her head slightly.
She knew from the novel that it was because of Sui Sheng that Han Xuejin obtained the precious thousand-year-old spirit pill, which greatly boosted her cultivation. It was the turning point that awakened her demon bloodline.
Later, she would gain the qualifications to enter the Celestial-Demon Spiritual Domain, a place only those above the Nascent Soul stage could access.
While fleeing her enemies, she would also face many trials and eventually receive the inheritance of the first Demon Lord. That would lead her into the Demon Realm, where she would finally reunite with the current Demon Lord.
But now that spirit pill had been given to her.
What would happen to the female lead?
Han Xuejin had always suffered despite being such a good person. And now she had given up the spirit pill for her.
Would she be unable to enter the Celestial-Demon Spiritual Domain?
Could it be that before she even had the chance, she would be killed by those disgusting hypocrites?
Zhu Changxuan looked apologetic as she said,
“I’m sorry. That thousand-year spirit pill… you could have used it yourself, but you gave it to me instead.”
Han Xuejin paused, then shook her head calmly.
“I was simply repaying the kindness your parents once showed me.”
Zhu Changxuan nodded slightly at her cool response and smiled sincerely.
“Still, thank you.”
Seeing that genuine smile, Han Xuejin pursed her lips slightly.
“This place is not safe. We need to head to Tianzhong Mountain.”
“For what?” Zhu Changxuan asked in confusion. She did not recall this part from the novel. Did she skip a chapter?
Sui Sheng stretched her neck lazily.
“Obviously, it’s for you.”
“For me?”
“To find Dragonbone Grass and heal your frail body.”
Otherwise, when my master wants to have a good time with you, things might not be so enjoyable.
Of course, Sui Sheng wisely kept that last part to herself.
Zhu Changxuan was once again moved. She stepped forward and gently held Han Xuejin’s wrists.
Han Xuejin’s eyes widened.
“You’re really so kind.”
Sui Sheng rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Cluck cluck. I can’t watch this. I really can’t.”
Since arriving in this A-B-O world, Zhu Changxuan still had not fully adapted to the distinctions between alphas and omegas. She often forgot she was now Han Xuejin’s fiancée, especially since in the original novel the character barely appeared and her death had been mentioned only in passing.
Though she held the title of the female lead’s fiancée, she had no real presence. Her role had been vague and forgettable. If the character had not shared her name, Zhu Changxuan might not have remembered it at all.
Han Xuejin, for her part, had no idea how to handle her fiancée.
In the previous life, they had barely interacted. She had intentionally kept her distance, and Zhu Changxuan had died early. Han Xuejin had assumed she was cold and reserved.
But now she realized that was not the case at all.
Even with a second chance at life, Han Xuejin had never experienced love or affection. She did not know how to deal with these emotions.
A soft blush rose to her cheeks, but she did not pull her hands away from Zhu Changxuan.
In the end, the two women and the chicken stood together on Han Xuejin’s enlarged sword, Qianpo, as they set off for Tianzhong Mountain.
As Zhu Changxuan stepped onto the sword, she glanced at Han Xuejin’s calm expression and suddenly remembered the A-B-O dynamics of this world. Considering their relationship as fiancées, she hesitated, then asked shyly,
“Um… is it alright if I hold onto your shoulder? I’m a little scared.”
Han Xuejin replied softly,
“Alright.”
“Thank you!”
Sui Sheng stared at Zhu Changxuan with distaste and muttered to herself. This pretty boy was even weaker than a chicken like her. Absolutely pathetic.
At that very moment, in another corner of the gloomy Youming Valley, Lian Huazi and her group were far less fortunate.
Using the Eight Meridian Compass, they had just managed to trace the general direction of Han Xuejin and Zhu Changxuan.
Unfortunately for them, they were now caught in a fierce battle with a fearsome Seven-Star Flood Serpent.
