- Chapter 6 - The Black Spider Queen
Han Xuejin had set up a protective barrier around them while flying, shielding them from the harsh wind but still allowing a gentle breeze to pass through.
Zhu Changxuan stood behind her, watching as Han Xuejin’s smooth, dark hair fluttered softly in the wind. A light and pleasant fragrance drifted over.
“You smell really nice,” Zhu Changxuan said suddenly.
She had noticed before that Han Xuejin carried a scent she found especially appealing. She assumed it was some kind of high-quality perfume or incense. For a while, she had wanted to ask, since she wanted to use it too, but never found the right moment.
Now, she finally blurted out the question.
Han Xuejin nearly lost control of the flight. The sword trembled slightly beneath them.
Startled, Zhu Changxuan instantly wrapped her arms tightly around Han Xuejin from behind.
The sudden embrace, combined with those direct words, made Han Xuejin’s face flush slightly. That scent… she could not be serious.
That was her pheromone.
In this world, complimenting someone’s pheromone so openly was no different from a confession.
While Han Xuejin tried to regain her balance, unsure of how to respond, Zhu Changxuan leaned in closer and breathed warm air near her ear.
“As I thought, the scent on you is really amazing. I want to use it too…”
Before she could finish, Han Xuejin interrupted, flustered and angry.
“Zhu Changxuan! Be quiet!”
Han Xuejin was starting to question whether Zhu Changxuan had ever truly been cold and distant in the Lingcang Sect. Or maybe she had just misunderstood her due to their lack of interaction?
How could she be so bold now? Even though they had a marriage agreement, they had barely spent any time together. And yet she was saying things like that…
Not to mention her face.
Zhu Changxuan was considered the most beautiful woman in the sect, while Han Xuejin had always carried a birthmark on her cheek.
For the first time, Han Xuejin felt a pang of self-consciousness and wondered if she should get rid of that mark.
In her previous life, she had never cared about appearances. Even when Sui Sheng had mentioned having a way to remove it, she showed no interest.
But now…
Zhu Changxuan heard the irritation in Han Xuejin’s voice and noticed her sudden silence. Feeling anxious and unsure, she hesitated to speak.
Maybe it was the hug.
She had forgotten that, in this world, she was an alpha now and technically engaged to Han Xuejin.
Most people hated arranged marriages, especially forced ones. Han Xuejin likely disliked the engagement too. And though none of it was her choice, it still must have felt uncomfortable.
Zhu Changxuan quickly let go of her.
“Sorry,” she said, voice soft and full of guilt.
Han Xuejin felt a pang of guilt in return as she heard the apology.
Sui Sheng quietly watched them from the side.
Oh? So this is the kind of dynamic they like? Interesting.
Suddenly, dense silver threads shot up from the forest below.
Han Xuejin immediately formed a hand seal, reinforcing the barrier.
But the threads quickly wrapped around the protective field, tangling them in shimmering silk.
“What’s going on?” Zhu Changxuan turned toward the direction the threads had come from.
Sui Sheng flapped her wings in a panic, too alarmed to even speak properly.
“Cluck cluck, cluck cluck!”
When Zhu Changxuan saw what was approaching, her pupils dilated. Her mouth hung open in fear.
“Spiders! So many spiders down there!”
Terrifying. Disgusting. She hated bugs more than anything.
The massive creature leading them was a Black Spider Queen, nearly two meters tall, surrounded by a swarm of palm-sized black spiders.
Zhu Changxuan instinctively moved closer to Han Xuejin.
She was trembling slightly, her body pressed close behind Han Xuejin’s, unable to fly properly because of the binding spider silk.
Han Xuejin had no choice but to land on a clear patch of ground.
She released a cold wave of spiritual energy through a spell, causing her sword, Qianpo, to shrink and return to her hand.
The silver threads began to freeze on contact with the frigid energy. The ice rapidly spread to the Black Spider Queen that had released them.
Sensing danger, the spider queen quickly severed the threads.
Han Xuejin followed up with another technique, the Thousand Cold Strike, aimed at the frozen silk.
The barrier shattered, and the frozen strands of spider silk fell to the ground, shattering like glass.
Sui Sheng was terrified. She knew just how dangerous the Black Spider Queen was. Most who were unlucky enough to cross paths with her ran away as quietly as possible.
Now the queen and her swarm had surrounded them.
Han Xuejin had faced the Black Spider Queen once before in her past life, during her early Nascent Soul stage. Back then, it had been a grueling battle.
Now her strength had improved, but she still had to protect Zhu Changxuan and Sui Sheng. She could not recklessly charge into battle.
Sui Sheng dared not get too close to Han Xuejin, afraid she might interfere with her master’s attacks. She clung to Zhu Changxuan’s feet instead.
Zhu Changxuan picked her up quickly. Her pale face turned even whiter from fright.
She suddenly remembered something from the book. The battle between Han Xuejin and the Black Spider Queen had been brutal.
But Sui Sheng had helped by using her invisibility ability, which ultimately led to their victory.
Zhu Changxuan turned to her and said quickly,
“Yellow Huang, use your invisibility now!”
Sui Sheng groaned.
“What is ‘Yellow Huang’? What are you even calling me?”
She sighed miserably.
“My invisibility only works once every three days, for half an hour each time. The day before I met you two, I had to use it to escape a Seven-Star Flood Serpent. It won’t be available again until tomorrow.”
Zhu Changxuan muttered under her breath,
“Then what’s the use of you?”
Han Xuejin remained silent.
Ah, that was right. In her past life, she had barely won against the Black Spider Queen in her early Nascent Soul stage, and that was only with Sui Sheng’s help using her invisibility. But now, she no longer needed it.
Zhu Changxuan spoke anxiously,
“Then what should we do?”
Han Xuejin replied calmly, her voice soft and steady.
“Do not be afraid. I am here.”
Zhu Changxuan looked at her with sparkling eyes. As expected of the female lead.
Sui Sheng trembled all over. At this point, all it could do was hope its powerful master would work a miracle.
“Master, you can do it!”
Zhu Changxuan was speechless.
The Black Spider Queen let out a fierce screech as a horde of black spiders swarmed toward them.
She herself fired a thick, blinding wave of webs overhead.
The spider silk was highly poisonous. Just a touch could cause bl00d vessels to rupture. The black spiders, too, were venomous. Even a graze or bite could be deadly.
Han Xuejin had no time to set up another barrier for Zhu Changxuan.
She summoned frigid energy in her left hand and waved it around her, freezing the incoming spiders instantly. Their bodies turned to brittle ice sculptures.
She then directed her frost toward Qianpo, her sword. Cold energy clung to the blade, and with a few precise swings, she sliced through the oncoming webs, releasing a powerful surge of ice.
The web strands froze on contact and shattered into small icy fragments.
Han Xuejin then focused her energy, controlling the shards and launching them like darts toward the spider swarm.
The black spiders were torn apart. Some died instantly, others were maimed.
But the attacks had no effect on the Black Spider Queen’s thick exoskeleton.
Han Xuejin knew from her past life that the queen’s outer shell was extremely tough, but the abdomen was vulnerable.
However, they were still too far away. She needed to get closer to land a fatal blow, but she also had to protect Zhu Changxuan behind her.
After a moment of thought, Han Xuejin raised her voice and provoked the enemy.
“What is it? Are you so cowardly that you send your underlings to die for you?”
Zhu Changxuan and Sui Sheng stared at her, stunned by the unusually bold tone.
As expected, the Black Spider Queen was enraged. With a roar, she charged forward and spat out a stream of acidic venom.
Han Xuejin’s eyes darkened. She combined her attack with the Wuji technique, enhancing the power of her Thousand Cold Strike.
The acidic fluid evaporated instantly under the force of her spiritual energy.
The Black Spider Queen pressed closer, raising two razor-sharp forelegs to strike.
Zhu Changxuan was frozen in fear, unable to speak.
Sui Sheng, on the other hand, was shrieking nonstop.
Han Xuejin took her chance and swung Qianpo. At her command, sharp ice spikes erupted from the ground, rising with deadly precision and piercing the queen’s vulnerable abdomen.
Before she could even react, the queen was impaled by dozens of spears of ice. Her roar of rage was cut short as her body went limp and the light in her eyes faded.
The swarm of black spiders, seeing their queen fall, scattered in every direction.
Sui Sheng jumped out of Zhu Changxuan’s arms and began hopping excitedly.
“Master is amazing! Master is unstoppable!”
Zhu Changxuan looked at Han Xuejin in pure admiration. As expected of the female lead. Absolutely incredible.
“Xuejin, you’re really amazing.”
Hearing her own name spoken with such warmth and awe, Han Xuejin grew slightly flustered.
She turned away and said coldly,
“It’s nothing. We should leave.”
“Yes, yes.”
Zhu Changxuan thought to herself that sticking close to the female lead was the only way she might survive in this dangerous world.
At the same time, she felt a quiet unease in her heart. Han Xuejin had saved her so many times, and yet she had nothing to offer in return.
Such a good person… and yet the ending she remembered from the novel had been so cruel.
She didn’t want things to turn out that way.
