- Chapter 9 - Zhu Changxuan's Parents
By the time Zhu Changxuan’s parents learned that their daughter had been taken away by Han Xuejin, several days had already passed.
Mo Lingchuan had only met Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao a few times.
Yet their appearances were deeply imprinted in his memory.
Zhu Shijing, despite being older than the sect master, had a youthful and refined appearance, like a gentle and elegant nobleman. Chen Tao was mature and beautiful. Although she was an Omega, she carried herself with confidence and strength, giving off an overpowering Alpha-like presence.
Zhu Shijing and Chen Tao listened in disbelief as Mo Lingchuan reported what had happened, exaggerating certain parts for effect.
Mo Lingchuan put on a sorrowful expression. “Elders, we never expected Han Xuejin to fall into demonic ways. She took Junior Sister Changxuan while we were off guard. Fairy Furong has already gone to search for her with others, but there could be danger…”
Zhu Shijing remained silent, holding back his emotions. Chen Tao, however, refused to believe that Han Xuejin had truly turned to darkness.
The two exchanged a glance, and without another word, they flew off on their swords to search for Zhu Changxuan.
Mo Lingchuan wanted to say more, but the couple had already vanished from sight. He lowered his gaze and quickly returned to the sect.
With a troubled face, Zhu Shijing looked at his wife and asked, “A Tao, what do you think of all this?”
Chen Tao held a spiritual stone in her hand. Zhu Changxuan had a matching one in her storage pouch, and the pair of stones could sense each other’s location.
Chen Tao did not know what to say. She did not believe, and did not want to believe, that Han Xuejin had turned demonic.
She replied softly, “Finding Changxuan is the most important thing right now.”
Zhu Shijing nodded, still looking deeply worried.
Elsewhere, Han Xuejin was preparing to enter the Realm of Immortals and Demons once again.
This realm opened once every hundred years and remained accessible for three years. Only cultivators at the Nascent Soul stage or above could enter. It happened to be the third year now, and the gate was still open.
Before going, Han Xuejin asked Sui Sheng with a blank expression,
“The birthmark on my face… do you know how to remove it?”
Sui Sheng was confused. “Huh? Shouldn’t we be focused on getting to the realm right now?”
Han Xuejin looked in the direction of the realm, her mind drifting to a bitter memory from her past life.
Back then, she had received the inheritance of the original Demon Lord. She also had the opportunity to claim an immortal technique left behind by a celestial cultivator who had ascended during tribulation.
But that cultivator was someone who cared greatly about appearance.
Although she had the opportunity, and the last remaining trace of the celestial’s will was about to fade forever, the immortal still refused to pass down the technique to her because of the birthmark on her face.
Even if no one inherited it, and the technique was lost to the world forever, he still would not give it to her.
At the time, she had not cared much for the technique.
But now, when she thought of Zhu Changxuan…
Han Xuejin touched the dark birthmark on her face.
This time, I will become stronger. I want to be worthy of you. If we meet again in the underworld, I hope you will like me then. No… it is wrong of me to assume you are so shallow. Even as I am now, you would still accept me.
Han Xuejin smiled bitterly. Is it true that women try to look beautiful for the ones they love?
“I have my own reasons,” she said firmly.
Sui Sheng noticed the shift in Han Xuejin’s mood and sighed.
“Master, your birthmark is very special. I think it formed in the womb due to outside interference. The only possible way to remove it is during a breakthrough, by using a spirit pill made from the White Saint Demon Herb. Its power, combined with the surge of energy during advancement, might be enough to erase the mark.”
“Luckily, the White Saint Demon Herb exists in the Realm of Immortals and Demons. But it is extremely dangerous. Even cultivators at the Out-of-Body stage would not dare provoke it easily. Are you sure you want to try, Master?”
Han Xuejin answered calmly, “Yes. Let’s go.”
Sui Sheng sighed again. “Alright then.”
Meanwhile, Zhu Changxuan sat silently in a wagon, lost in thought.
It was an uncovered wagon meant for carrying goods.
They had come across an unlucky cart driver on the road. Si Chou did not feel like flying and insisted on riding in the wagon.
She forced the driver to dump his cargo and take them to Tianman City instead.
The book had mentioned Tianman City as the most prosperous place in this world. It was also conveniently close to Tianzhong Mountain.
The city had both regular people and cultivators from all regions.
The cart driver was just an ordinary man. Faced with an unreasonable cultivator like Si Chou, he dared not refuse.
In the end, Song Yidao could not bear it and gave the driver several spirit stones as compensation. He was overwhelmed with gratitude.
Although spirit stones could not help ordinary people cultivate, they could extend life and be traded for large sums of silver.
Now, Si Chou sat next to Zhu Changxuan, while Song Yidao sat across from them, watching closely.
Zhu Changxuan carefully observed Si Chou.
Si Chou noticed and turned to look at her.
Zhu Changxuan quickly lowered her head.
Si Chou stared at her for a while, then said,
“You are very beautiful. It’s hard to look away from you.”
Zhu Changxuan froze. No one had ever complimented her that directly before. Her face flushed, and she shyly replied,
“Um… thank you.”
Song Yidao sat coldly across from them, her expression flat. She looked at the two of them, clearly unimpressed.
Should I leave? she thought to herself.
Suddenly, Si Chou turned to her and smiled with narrowed eyes.
“But the one I really like is you, Song Yidao.”
Song Yidao’s face darkened immediately.
Si Chou laughed.
“Even when you’re angry, you are still so adorable. It’s making my bl00d boil.”
Song Yidao was furious and embarrassed.
“You… you… shameless.”
She puffed up with anger and turned away from Si Chou.
Si Chou only laughed harder.
Zhu Changxuan quietly stared. She truly could not figure Si Chou out.
After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “Why are we going to Tianman City?”
She regretted the question as soon as it left her lips, worried that Si Chou would be angry.
But Si Chou answered calmly, “There’s news that the Left Guardian ran away from home. I’m going to bring him back.”
Zhu Changxuan had no words.
Song Yidao also fell silent.
Just then, on the road ahead, they saw a group of fierce-looking men. In the center, a mother and her child knelt on the ground.
The cart driver glanced nervously at Si Chou. She said calmly, “Keep going.”
“Yes, immortal,” the driver replied quickly.
Song Yidao frowned as she looked at the scene ahead.
One of the thugs stepped in front of the cart.
“Stop right there.”
The driver had no choice but to halt the cart.
The bandit growled, “Hand over all your money.”
A few of the men came forward and looked inside the cart. When they saw the three people sitting inside, their leader’s eyes lit up with excitement. He gave a lecherous grin.
“Well, well. Such beautiful Omegas. And even the Alpha looks stunning. Forget the money. Just stay here with us.”
The others also stared at them with greedy eyes.
Zhu Changxuan felt deeply uncomfortable under their stares and nearly got goosebumps.
She glanced at Si Chou, who simply let out a quiet laugh. It sent a chill down her spine.
Zhu Changxuan silently lit a candle in her heart for these bandits. They had no idea they were trying to rob cultivators.
Nearby, the woman on the ground clutched her seven- or eight-year-old child and begged the bandits tearfully.
“Please, let my child go. You can take all my money.”
The child cried loudly in her arms.
One of the thugs replied coldly,
“Hmph. That little bit of money means nothing. If you cooperate, we might even sell your kid to a rich family where he can live in comfort.”
The woman wept and pleaded again.
“I beg you, please let my son go…”
Song Yidao originally had no intention of dealing with those bandits. She figured Si Chou would take care of it eventually.
But when she saw the mother and child in danger, her sense of justice flared. Without saying a word, she leapt off the cart.
With a flurry of punches and kicks, she took down the bandits before they could even react.
Then she dashed forward and knocked out the ones surrounding the mother and child as well.
In just moments, more than ten thugs were lying on the ground, groaning in pain.
“Ow… it hurts…”
Zhu Changxuan could not help but admire her. “Wow, amazing.”
Si Chou smirked. “Hmm, not bad for the Omega I took a liking to. So fierce. I like that.”
Zhu Changxuan was speechless.
Song Yidao glared at the bandits and shouted, “If you try this again, I will take your lives. Now get lost!”
The bandits scrambled away as fast as they could, limping and stumbling.
Si Chou watched them flee and shook her head.
“You actually let them go. Give it a bit of time, and they’ll be back to their old tricks. Don’t you agree, Pillar?”
Zhu Changxuan blinked. “Huh? You’re talking to me?”
Si Chou replied, “Yes. Not happy with the nickname?”
Zhu Changxuan forced a smile. She did not really mind being called that. She glanced at the backs of the fleeing bandits and sighed.
“You might be right.”
Si Chou watched her profile for a moment as if trying to read her thoughts, then smiled and looked away.
The mother and child were also heading to Tianman City. Song Yidao wanted to invite them to ride along but hesitated. She looked toward Si Chou.
Si Chou understood and said with a teasing smile, “They can ride with us, but Song Yidao, you have to give me a kiss.”
Zhu Changxuan’s eyes widened in shock.
Song Yidao’s face turned cold. She looked like she was ready to curse her out at any moment.
After a long pause, she leaned in and gave Si Chou a quick kiss on the cheek, then immediately pulled back. Her face was slightly red, whether from anger or embarrassment, it was hard to tell.
Si Chou had not expected her to actually go through with it. Her heart skipped a beat, though she kept a calm expression.
Zhu Changxuan looked at the two of them, wondering if their relationship was some kind of enemies-to-lovers story.
Once the mother and child got into the cart, the child had not yet calmed down and was still quietly crying.
Song Yidao was about to comfort him when Si Chou spoke.
“Crying won’t change anything, kid. If you want to get what you desire, if you want to protect the ones you care about, then you need to become stronger.”
The child sniffled and tried to hold back his tears.
His mother quickly apologized.
Song Yidao shot Si Chou a disapproving look, but deep down, she knew what she said was true. In a world where the strong prey on the weak, that was the reality.
Zhu Changxuan heard those words and lowered her head in quiet thought.
She was beginning to feel that Si Chou was not as cruel as the book had described. According to the text, Si Chou would never allow a mother and child to ride along. It was surprising that she had not harmed them. Maybe Si Chou’s real personality was not like the one written in the book after all.
When they finally arrived at Tianman City, Si Chou put on a mask that covered the upper half of her face. She handed similar masks to both Zhu Changxuan and Song Yidao.
The group got out of the cart and walked into the bustling city. The mother and child happened to be going the same way and followed along for now.
As they passed by a dried fruit shop, the little boy looked at the display with wide eyes full of longing.
Zhu Changxuan noticed his expression. She remembered she had plenty of spirit stones in her storage pouch and was actually quite wealthy.
She crouched down a bit and asked gently, “Would you like some? I can buy you a little.”
The child looked up at his mother, who frowned slightly. He quickly shook his head.
“Thank you, big sister, but I don’t like sweets.”
His mother also thanked Zhu Changxuan.
“You already saved us. We can’t ask for more. Thank you for your kindness, but he really doesn’t like sweets.”
Si Chou, standing nearby, suddenly said, “But I like them. Pillar, go buy me some.”
Zhu Changxuan sighed and pulled out a few spirit stones, then bought a large assortment of dried fruits.
Eventually, they reached an elegant and well-decorated inn. Si Chou intended to stay there for the night, but the mother and child needed to continue on their journey, so they parted ways.
Si Chou booked three adjacent premium rooms and told the other two to head upstairs first.
Zhu Changxuan admired how relaxed Si Chou seemed, not afraid at all that they might try to run away.
But then she remembered that Si Chou had marked both her and Song Yidao with a tracking spell. For three days, their location could be sensed at any time. With their current level of strength, there was no way to remove it.
The rooms were on the second floor. Zhu Changxuan quickly went up, eager to rest. Song Yidao followed quietly behind her.
As soon as they entered the room, Zhu Changxuan opened the window and saw the mother and child had not gone far. She also saw Si Chou.
Si Chou handed the dried fruit to the child, who looked surprised. After that, she turned and walked away.
Zhu Changxuan quickly closed the window and sat on the bed, stunned by what she had just seen.
“She…”
Then she remembered that Song Yidao was supposed to be the one who eventually killed Si Chou.
She rubbed her head in frustration.
She actually did not want Si Chou to die.
But she had no idea how Song Yidao had killed her. The book had never explained that part.
