- Chapter 1 - Smashing the Phone and Transmigrating
Su Tang’s expression was complex.
Why didn’t anyone tell me that staying up late would get me transmigrated?!
Transmigration was one thing, but why couldn’t she have been reborn into a position of power and influence, as a domineering villainess or a beloved protagonist with plot armor? Instead, she was stuck as a cannon fodder character.
Su Tang had transmigrated into a novel, a perfect fit for her sleep-deprived state, set in a post-apocalyptic world of revenge and survival.
In this world, after the apocalypse, the protagonist’s family had been brutally murdered by the villains, sacrificed as “living offerings” to their twisted rituals.
Driven by vengeance for her father, the protagonist had vowed to avenge them, slaughtering enemies and demons alike, becoming a legendary figure in the apocalyptic world.
But…
Su Tang’s lips twitched slightly.
She had transmigrated into the body of the character who would ultimately murder the protagonist’s family—the leader of the villainous gang.
To make matters worse, her character’s fate was utterly tragic. She would be brutally killed, her head smashed by the protagonist with a brick.
Su Tang: ……
Damn it! If I’d known staying up late would lead to this, I would have gone to bed earlier!
She suppressed the bitter resentment churning in her stomach. What was done was done, but from now on, she would do everything in her power to save the remaining members of the protagonist’s family.
The System reminded her that staying up all night had left her exhausted. Her fingers trembled as she tapped the screen, her nose stinging from the cold.
Now is the time, she thought, to save Yan Xing’s life and end this tragedy!
Â
Su Tang tentatively called out to the System:
“Hello, System Brother! System Sister!”
Â
Can you hear me?
She repeated the call, but only received the System’s standard binding notification. Suppressing her frustration, she sighed in resignation.
Why am I always so unlucky?
Not only had she transmigrated into a cannon fodder character, but she’d also ended up in a zombie apocalypse. And these weren’t your typical zombies—they treated humans like afternoon snacks, chewing them up and swallowing them whole.
Worse still, she lacked System Protection.
If she had transmigrated earlier with System Protection, she might have had a chance. But now, she could only take things one step at a time.
Su Tang took a deep breath, savoring the warmth and comfort of her room. Despite the apocalyptic winter raging outside, her room remained cozy thanks to the crackling fireplace. This sanctuary was her only refuge, a haven provided by the leader of the survivors.
Bundled in a thick cotton coat, Su Tang pushed open the door and stepped out into the biting cold, the frigid air stinging her nose.
Su Tang hurried forward, her boots crunching through the snow-stained mud. She pushed through the crowd, hoping she wasn’t too late.
She was certain Yanxing was here. Today was the day he was scheduled to be publicly executed. If she moved quickly enough, she might still be able to save him.
I have to escape this calamity!
But then she remembered the brick that had smashed against her head, the sickening crack of her skull, the bl00d splattering across her face.
On the execution platform, Yanxing stood bound by thick ropes, his face streaked with black mud and melting snow.
“He infiltrated our warehouse, stole precious medical supplies, and deserves to die!”
The executioner, a burly man standing on the platform, raised a heavy cleaver. Su Tang narrowed her eyes—this must be the same man who had been her father’s executioner.
The man stood nearly two meters tall, with a thick beard and a prominent scar across his face—a classic villain’s visage.
“Punish him!”
“The bandit deserves to be punished!”
The crowd roared its approval, pelting the platform with rotten eggs and wilted cabbage leaves—the meager ammunition of a starving populace.
Even a single, worm-eaten cabbage leaf was a treasure, a dream of sustenance for the desperate masses.
Su Tang took a deep breath and leaped onto the platform.
“Wait, Father,” she said.
“Yanxing is sick and needs medicine. We can’t punish him. Shouldn’t we uphold the rules of the shelter?”
Su Tang struggled to play the role of a transmigrated character. After all, Yanxing was just a cannon fodder character, and she was the pampered young lady of the family.
Yet, deep down, she was more romantic than she let on.
Su Tang carefully followed the script, scanning the crowd. Her gaze landed on Yanxing, who was hiding in a dark corner, his face flushed with fever.
Yanxing had broken into the warehouse to steal medicine for his illness, risking his life in the process.
In the post-apocalyptic world, medicine was as precious as gold.
Moreover, Yanxing refused to be bound by the shelter’s rules and had never sought its protection.
When Su Tang suddenly appeared on the platform, the crowd froze in stunned silence before slowly shaking their heads.
“Tangtang, you’re being too sentimental,” one man said. “We can’t let him off without punishment. What about the shelter’s rules?”
Su Tang watched as Yi’s father raised his knife.
The wind howled, carrying the stench of decay. The zombies surged forward, their rotting flesh scraping against the ground as they closed in.
She blocked the zombies’ path, determined not to let them harm her companions. The leader of the group had already fallen, his life extinguished by the swarm, leaving her feeling utterly hopeless.
But then, a thought struck her: If I can save these people, maybe I can change my fate.
Without hesitation, Yi’s father threw down his machete.
“Tangtang, are you willing to risk everything to save them?”
“Yes,” Su Tang replied firmly.
“Good. Since they’re here because of me, I should take responsibility.”
Su Tang felt a pang of fear. Though she no longer feared zombies, she knew that if she saved these people, they would inevitably be targeted by the System’s wrath. Sooner or later, she would be struck down by a brick.
“I promise, I won’t let them cause any trouble.”
Hearing Yi’s father’s words, Su Tang picked up the discarded machete and clumsily cut through the ropes binding the survivors.
“Thank you, young lady,” one of the survivors said gratefully.
“No need to thank me,” Su Tang replied, shaking her head. If I hadn’t protected you, the System would have struck me down with a brick anyway.
She let out a sigh of relief.
Although she didn’t understand the System’s workings, she knew that saving these people was the right thing to do. It was a gamble, but one she was willing to take.
Su Tang’s group had been formed to create a harmonious team, with happiness as its foundation and the ultimate goal of achieving a fulfilling life.
However, things didn’t go as planned, and the situation took an unexpected turn.
Su Tang had been relying on Yanxing for financial support, but Yanxing refused to engage in petty squabbles. Instead, he focused on securing resources for the group, leaving Su Tang responsible for maintaining appearances and handling social interactions. This arrangement left her feeling resentful.
Su Tang felt no shame in relying on Yanxing for financial support.
After all…
Relying on someone for financial support was a skill, and she was simply adapting to the circumstances.
Su Tang had always been meticulous about her personal space.
She was a hypocrite. Even with zombies separated by a layer of glass, she couldn’t sleep soundly.
Gradually, Su Tang’s attention shifted to Yanxing, and the emotions she had been suppressing began to surface on his face.
His brows were sharp and cold, yet his demeanor exuded a captivating allure. Thick eyebrows framed his face, his nose was straight and prominent, and his thin lips were a delicate shade of pink, like cherry blossoms. A faint blush tinged his cheeks, lending him an air of refined elegance.
Su Tang began plotting how to elevate her position as his financial dependent.
I’m sorry…
Â
Yanxing, I’m going to take full advantage of your generosity and make you regret ever offering me this comfortable life!
Though Yanxing’s iron will seemed unbreakable, Su Tang was determined to find a way to exploit his weaknesses.
