- Chapter 11 - Are You Starting to Care About Me?
When Chen Bin heard Su Tang mention getting Su Jianyu to authenticate the fingers, panic gripped her heart.
Only three of the ten fingers were ones she had cut off herself. The remaining seven were indeed dried zombie fingers she had scavenged from the streets.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to return so quickly. These zombies had evolved to become increasingly formidable, capable of detecting the scent of any living creature from nearly a hundred meters away.
Whether it was a rat or a cockroach, anything that moved would be devoured.
Unlike the stereotypical zombies in novels and dramas that only target humans, these creatures consumed anything that moved.
Therefore, Chen Bin had to be extremely cautious.
“No need,” Chen Bin said, though she carefully packed the zombie fingers back into her backpack.
“Since you’re not convinced, let’s have a competition.”
Chen Bin had earned Su Jianyu’s approval through genuine skill, though she had certainly taken shortcuts. She glanced at the woman defending Su Tang, her mind racing.
A mere woman? How could she possibly compete with me?
This time, she wouldn’t slack off. Instead, she would compete fairly against her in killing zombies.
Just killing one or two more should settle it. Meanwhile, this woman probably couldn’t kill even a single one.
Bai Yanxing had already realized that the woman before her was too guilty to verify the zombie finger, which was why she had proposed the competition. Yet she didn’t back down; instead, she resolutely stepped into her trap.
For some reason…
She didn’t want Su Tang to marry this man, who was full of lies.
“Fine,” she said, “but I’m not like you.”
“A cowardly, timid person who’s afraid to face those demons.”
Hearing Bai Yanxing stand up for her, Su Tang felt a small tremor in her heart. As expected, she thought, my plan to seduce the Female Lead has been a resounding success.
Because she would go to any lengths for her friends.
And even more so for her lover…
Risking life and limb.
Su Tang silently praised the Female Lead, forced to admit that she was practically the perfect partner. Thank goodness I made my move as soon as I transmigrated, she thought.
Otherwise, if the Female Lead—that holier-than-thou saint with her maxed-out halo of virtue—had managed to win her over, Bai Yanxing would have been utterly ruined.
Hearing about the competition, a large crowd from the Black Wolf Gang gathered to watch. As the gang’s membership continued to grow, their territory had been steadily expanding outward.
Just a few days prior, Su Jianyu had decided to reclaim an old urban district on the outskirts of the city to serve as a temporary rest area.
If a competition was to be held, this location would be ideal.
Su Jianyu had heard that Chen Bin had returned, but Su Tang refused to marry him. With Bai Yanxing’s support, the two women had clashed, leading to the competition.
“Daughter, didn’t you used to like her so much?”
Su Tang: ……
Dear Dad, I didn’t want this either! How was I supposed to know that one moment I’d be reading your Apocalypse novel, and the next I’d be transmigrated into it?
But she dared not voice these thoughts aloud.
“People change, Dad. I’m fine being alone now, and besides… I’m not ready for marriage.”
Su Tang followed Su Jianyu to the outer perimeter of the Black Wolf Gang’s territory.
“Tell your dad the truth. Do you have feelings for Bai Yanxing?”
“You two have been inseparable these past few days.”
Su Tang’s eyes darted around, her mind racing. No way…
Is my lesbian energy really that obvious?
“N-no,” she stammered, pressing her lips together. She didn’t notice Bai Yanxing, walking ahead, grip her bow tightly, as if she had overheard her.
But Su Tang, whose eyes were wandering restlessly, caught the subtle movement.
Is Bai Yanxing jealous? Or does she care?
After all, they had spent so many days together. The Female Lead’s attitude toward her had softened considerably, no longer as dismissive as before.
Losing interest in the conversation with her cheap dad, Su Tang patted her arm and, like a nimble sparrow, flitted over to Bai Yanxing’s side.
Bai Yanxing carried a black bow slung across her back.
His slender silhouette clearly revealed her feminine figure, making it impossible to mistake her for a man. In fact, the black bow had become the Female Lead’s signature weapon.
Indestructible, permanent bow and arrow.
“Yanxing, while I appreciate your help, I have to ask: do you care about me?”
Su Tang spoke almost directly into Bai Yanxing’s ear, the warm breath tickling her skin. Bai Yanxing found it hard to resist.
He shifted her feet slightly and looked up at the swirling snow.
His cheeks flushed a delicate pink, but she stubbornly maintained her denial.
“No, I don’t. I just don’t want you to be harassed by her because you’re my benefactor.”
With such a crimson face, who would believe such nonsense?
Su Tang didn’t voice her skepticism, merely smiled and nodded.
“You clearly do care about me.”
Amidst their playful bickering, they had already reached the area they were responsible for clearing. Many zombies roamed here, so everyone lowered their voices.
“Mm.”
“I care about you, so I don’t want you to marry someone who would force you.”
Bai Yanxing lowered her voice, her courage seemingly bolstered in this moment, no longer avoiding Su Tang as she had before. She leaned close and whispered into Su Tang’s ear.
The slightly cool press of her lips against Su Tang’s ear sent a shiver through her.
Su Tang instinctively covered her ear, feeling a little embarrassed.
Damn it!
I was the one who planned to seduce the Female Lead, so how did I end up being seduced instead?
Especially the sensation of those lips against her ear—she could almost feel a lingering warmth and dampness.
But after delivering those provocative words, Bai Yanxing had already positioned herself at the base of the building.
“Whoever kills the most zombies within ten minutes wins,” Su Jianyu announced, stopwatch in hand, wearing the smug expression of someone enjoying the show. Truth be told, she was rooting for Bai Yanxing.
Though she found the dynamic between her daughter and Bai Yanxing a bit odd, as long as Su Tang was happy, she wouldn’t interfere too much.
Bai Yanxing braced herself against the windowsill with one hand and vaulted through the window in a single motion. Nocking an arrow, she immediately shot down one zombie. Sensing her approach, the remaining zombies bared their fangs and lunged forward.
Bai Yanxing dodged to the side, then, as the zombie approached, she kicked its knee with brutal force. Su Tang could even hear the crack from where she stood.
In the next instant, the zombie collapsed. Bai Yanxing drew the small knife from her waist and plunged it into the central region at the back of the zombie’s brain.
“Tsk tsk…”
Su Jianyu stared in stunned silence.
“Tangtang, where did you pick up this war god?”
Su Tang didn’t respond to her cheap father, but inwardly she couldn’t help but scoff. Of course, it’s because I’ve read the novel. The Female Lead’s golden finger is absolutely massive!
Ten minutes passed quickly.
But then disaster struck. Seeing herself falling behind, Chen Bin recklessly charged into the zombie horde, hoping to kill a few more. Instead, she was surrounded.
“Damn it!”
“Chen Bin’s been surrounded!”
Su Jianyu raised her hand, signaling the women behind her to rush forward and rescue Chen Bin.
But it was too late. Chen Bin had already been completely overwhelmed and pinned to the ground. First, a zombie bit her thigh.
“Aaaah!”
His agonizing screams echoed through the house.
