- Chapter 18 - The Villainous Father's Terror
Perhaps because they had confirmed their incredibly strange relationship today, both went to bed early. Su Tang added several large logs to the fireplace.
Once the room was nice and warm, she climbed into bed, wearing only a thin silk nightgown. Her delicate figure was faintly visible through the sheer fabric, revealing the gentle curves beneath.
Bai Yanxing closed her eyes, telling herself to act like a proper lady and not look at anything she shouldn’t. But her reddening ears betrayed her.
Clearly, she had seen something she shouldn’t have.
Su Tang, however, paid no mind. She turned completely toward Bai Yanxing and wrapped her arms around him.
“Don’t be so stiff,” she murmured, her soft lips brushing against her earlobe, leaving a damp warmth. “It’s freezing out here. We’ll stay warmer if we cuddle.”
“That’s what little animals do…”
Bai Yanxing’s heart pounded wildly as she turned her head.
“You just kissed me. I can’t just calmly accept that…”
“So, Su Tang, you have to allow me to react this way.”
No wonder her parents were university professors. Even without a college education, Bai Yanxing spoke with a refined, scholarly air, carrying the aura of a cultured family.
“Alright.”
Su Tang pressed her cheek against her shoulder. Bai Yanxing was lean, with a cool, bony frame—a rarity in the Apocalypse, where someone like the original owner, with her slightly plump, fleshy figure, was practically a rare SSR card.
“Good night.”
“Bai Yanxing.”
After saying this, Su Tang turned off the light and drifted into a deep sleep.
Bai Yanxing was left alone, her heart racing wildly, like a little rabbit hopping erratically in her chest.
So this is what it feels like to be moved…
He reached up to touch her thin lips, as if savoring the memory of that hot, tender, and wet kiss by the fireplace.
The weather was getting colder, a fact Su Tang could feel acutely. The reason she noticed was because she found herself holding the Female Lead tighter each day.
When she woke up this morning, she found her nose pressed against something soft. Lifting her head, her gaze landed on Bai Yanxing’s smooth chin.
His hair was loose, cascading over her shoulders.
Bai Yanxing kept her hair short because it was too much trouble to manage, especially in winter. Long hair took forever to dry after washing, and when fighting Zombies, it often became matted with viscous, bloody grime that had to be cleaned immediately.
So she kept it short, though not excessively so, reaching to her neck and usually half-tied up.
When she slept, she let it down, the strands draping over her cheeks and neck, making her look like a fluffy lion.
Feeling slightly guilty, Su Tang retreated a little. Had she really been buried in the Female Lead’s arms just now?
That was way too perverted.
She got out of bed and started dressing, but Bai Yanxing was always highly alert. The slightest rustle of fabric was enough to make her open her eyes.
A lingering warmth still hung in the air, indicating that the two large logs they’d thrown into the fire last night hadn’t completely burned out.
Bai Yanxing propped herself up on one arm and slowly sat up. He’d slept deeply, and last night’s dream had been particularly vivid and erotic.
He’d dreamt of pinning Su Tang down…
Bai Yanxing rubbed her temples. How can I keep having these fantasies every day? This is getting out of hand.
He got up, dressed, and after a quick wash, the two of them headed out. Su Tang planned to continue patrolling with the main group today.
Traveling with the larger group meant they wouldn’t have to fear even Jumping Zombies.
Even the most cunning Zombie can’t withstand a group beatdown, Su Tang thought cheerfully.
But as soon as they opened the door, they found five or six people kneeling in the snow-covered ground. Their bodies were blanketed in snowflakes, but that wasn’t the most horrifying part. The most terrifying thing was that each of them had faces swollen like pig’s heads, completely unrecognizable.
Still, their clothing offered faint clues to their identities. After all, few people changed clothes frequently in winter, even those with obsessive cleanliness wouldn’t waste resources like that.
Both water resources and thick winter clothing were scarce commodities.
These were the women who had given Su Tang those deeply unsettling glances yesterday.
And they had even fought with Bai Yanxing.
Su Tang instinctively wanted to close the door and reopen it, convinced she must have opened it wrong to witness such a bizarre scene.
But then another figure emerged from the snowy landscape.
“What are you standing there for? Apologize!”
“Both of you apologize!”
Only then did Su Tang notice the woman standing beside them, clad in a military-green overcoat and deerskin gloves. Tall and imposing, with sharp, hawk-like features, she was none other than Su Jianyu. With a single kick each, she had sent the women sprawling to the ground.
“We’re… we’re sorry…”
The other men, shivering from the cold, stammered their apologies.
“Su Tang… Bai Yanxing, we didn’t mean it yesterday.”
“Please forgive us…”
Their voices were tinged with desperation, on the verge of tears. Su Tang finally understood the truth about the woman before her: she was the villain from the novel’s opening chapters, the one who had brutally murdered Bai Yanxing’s parents.
His actions and methods were naturally far from benevolent.
“Who could even hear such a weak voice?”
“You think contributing to the Black Wolf Gang gives you the right to treat my daughter like an object?”
Su Jianyu’s tone grew increasingly fierce.
“Let me tell you this: I founded the Black Wolf Gang! I’ll punish you however I see fit!”
“Without me, you’d all be zombie fodder by now!”
With each roar, the women trembled even more violently.
No wonder she had established such authority within the Black Wolf Gang; her iron-fisted methods were undeniable.
“Alright, Dad, they’ve already apologized,” Su Tang said, still fearing someone might die. Though these women were vile, they were still members of the Black Wolf Gang and possessed some combat skills.
Su Jianyu finally stopped.
“If you’re not satisfied, you can leave. I don’t need you here anyway.”
Now that winter had arrived, the Black Wolf Gang’s Shelter was besieged daily by desperate refugees. During the summer and autumn, people could still manage to survive on their own.
But in the dead of winter, with all life withered, survival without proper means was nearly impossible.
Despite the Black Wolf Gang having stockpiled ample food supplies in advance, this winter still proved to be a harsh ordeal.
Four years into the Apocalypse, every salvageable location in the city had already been thoroughly scoured, leaving behind only crumbling ruins and heavy, immovable furniture.
New arrivals seeking refuge were required to spend several days in the Quarantine Zone for infection screening. Only those cleared were permitted to join the Black Wolf Gang.
Thus, Su Jianyu had no shortage of manpower.
What she lacked was loyalty.
Now…
With winter’s arrival, she needed to prepare for a grand plan.
As the Boss, she had to lead the way to a Hydroelectric Power Plant located several dozen kilometers away in the suburban outskirts.
Though small, it was sufficient to supply the entire Black Wolf Gang through the bitter winter.
All they needed was to restore power and repair the plant.
For this mission, she assembled a team of nearly fifty people, equipped with vehicles and horses. Bai Yanxing’s mother was also included, as she was one of the few in the Black Wolf Gang who understood the plant’s operational principles.
He needed to clear a route spanning over ten kilometers and establish patrol teams to eliminate Zombies.
The dam required constant vigilance; simply restoring the connection wouldn’t guarantee its security.
