- Transmigrating as a Cannon Fodder in the Apocalypse, Seducing the Mad Female Lead
- Chapter 20 - The Evolution of Zombies
Sunlight streamed through the towering forest, casting dappled patches of light like scattered gold leaf. Su Tang had finally learned to coordinate with her black horse.
She was overjoyed, turning her head to catch a glimpse of the Female Lead’s serene profile.
“Yanxing, I can ride a horse now!” Su Tang exclaimed, her voice brimming with excitement. She had always thought herself hopelessly inept, but it turned out she wasn’t as hopeless as she’d feared. At least, she could pick up skills like marksmanship and horseback riding with minimal practice.
“Mm,” Bai Yanxing nodded with a smile. “You’re improving quickly.”
Occasionally, clumps of snow would shake loose from the pine needles. As they passed beneath a low-hanging branch, a flurry of snowflakes cascaded down, dusting Su Tang’s hair with white.
Bai Yanxing reached out to brush the snow away, but Su Tang immediately returned the gesture, wiping the snow from Bai Yanxing’s hair as well. Their intimate exchange drew frequent glances from those around them.
“Boss, do you think Miss Su might be interested in Bai Yanxing…?”
Though four years had passed since the Apocalypse, and much of modern civilization’s order had collapsed, most of the adults here had still attended school and retained some knowledge of the past.
“Hmm…”
Su Jianyu fell into deep thought, feeling as if her daughter had been “snatched by a pig.” But considering Bai Yanxing’s combat prowess, she couldn’t exactly be called a pig.
At the very least, she was a ferocious tiger.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Su Jianyu warned.
He didn’t intend to meddle too much in her daughter’s personal affairs, but Bai Yanxing certainly deserved closer observation. The woman was ruthless and cunning.
Perhaps she could be groomed as a successor.
The subordinate immediately fell silent, daring not to speak further.
After bypassing a dense jungle, they reached the hydroelectric dam. Many of the railings were rusted, and only a few scattered zombies roamed the area.
A few arrows quickly dispatched the zombies, but the smoother things went, the more uneasy Su Tang felt. She couldn’t shake the worry that calm always precedes a major battle, whether in novels or games.
Still, the Female Lead always had an invincible aura—a fact she could take comfort in.
Smiles bloomed on everyone’s faces. The dam’s condition was better than expected. The truck drove right up to the main gate, which was tightly locked, as if it had been sealed when the pandemic first erupted.
As a result, no zombies were found within the dam.
The dam’s walls towered high, and without the preparations they had made beforehand, it would have been impossible to breach them.
Using bolt cutters, they severed the rusted chains securing the power plant. The discarded lock was replaced with a new one at Su Jianyu’s command.
Several members eagerly grabbed spray paint and emblazoned the dam with black wolf heads, marking their claim to the dam’s usage rights ahead of Feather City.
Bai Yanxing brought the convoy to a halt. She dismounted first, landing gracefully on one foot—a move that looked effortlessly cool, likely due to her long legs.
Su Tang wanted to try the same, but her foot couldn’t reach the ground, creating an awkward moment.
“Don’t rush, just jump down,” Bai Yanxing said, extending a hand without intending to catch her. Riding a horse required learning to dismount independently for improvement.
Su Tang leaped down, but her foot landed on slippery moss, nearly sending her sliding forward. She gripped the reins tightly, bracing for a muddy fall.
Instead, she landed in a warm embrace.
“Watch your step when dismounting,” Bai Yanxing said, her voice tinged with amusement. “You stepped on moss.”
Plants possess remarkable vitality. Without regular maintenance and clearing by humans, a once-scenic mountain peak could be completely overgrown within just a few months.
Thus, the moss thrived on the weathered concrete surfaces of the abandoned power plant.
How could moss grow on concrete?
The answer lay in the thick layer of fallen leaves that carpeted the concrete. Untouched by human hands or vehicle tires, nature had reclaimed its domain, erasing all traces of human presence.
These landscapes were sights Su Tang might never have witnessed in her lifetime—only the dilapidated hydroelectric dam stood amidst the forested riverbanks, the rushing water cascading down with a thunderous roar.
Only when Bai Yanxing’s arm tightened around her waist did Su Tang realize she was standing on a soft, mossy carpet.
“Thank you…” she breathed, relief washing over her.
“Don’t mention it. No need for thanks,” Bai Yanxing replied, turning her head slightly. If she really wants to thank me, she thought, a kiss would be the perfect reward.
But the thought remained unspoken, lacking the courage to voice it in front of so many people.
The main gate swung open, and vehicles began streaming back inside, leaving only a dozen guards outside to patrol the dam’s perimeter for any potential hazards.
The remaining members entered the dam to begin clearing operations.
Bai Yanxing, concerned for her mother, naturally went inside as well. Many of the iron doors were rusted, but…
As a municipal-level engineering project, the steel structures deeper inside remained remarkably intact, with only a layer of dust.
“We’ll check the turbine room,” Su Jianyu instructed her team, looking down at them. “You guys search the other rooms. If you find any usable clothes, books, or anything else, bring it all back.”
Before she could assign her daughter to a separate task, she saw her trailing obediently behind Bai Yanxing like an affectionate kitten.
His meticulously cultivated flower, stolen away, pot and soil included!
Su Jianyu was momentarily speechless with frustration.
But this was her daughter’s choice. She couldn’t stop her, so she could only grit her teeth silently, nearly grinding them to dust.
Bai Yanxing’s mission was to search the various rooms. Her exceptional combat skills meant she was assigned the more dangerous tasks.
To paraphrase Spider-Man’s famous line: with great power comes great responsibility.
“Following me will be very dangerous,” Bai Yanxing said, turning to gaze intently at Su Tang. She didn’t want to expose her to unnecessary risks, especially in these unknown areas where elite zombies might lurk.
“I’m not afraid,” Su Tang said, shaking her head. She hadn’t been slacking off these past few days, practicing everything she needed to. She couldn’t keep hiding behind the Female Lead forever.
While her initial plan had been to cling to the Female Lead’s coattails, being a constant burden wouldn’t do. Even the strongest Female Lead could get injured.
Besides…
Su Tang’s mindset had already shifted. She no longer wanted to be a mere liability. If she wanted to protect the people she loved, she needed to become stronger herself.
“Alright,” Bai Yanxing agreed.
The search party consisted of three or four people.
They systematically opened each room, inspecting the supplies inside.
After four years, even if there was any food left, it wouldn’t be much.
However, the dam had never been breached before, so there likely weren’t many zombies inside.
But thinking that…
Seemed a bit too optimistic.
Finally, when Bai Yanxing opened one of the rooms, she discovered a group of zombies confined in a storage room. The zombies were packed tightly together, their clothes tattered and worn.
It was clear they weren’t dam workers but rather survivors who had sought refuge here.
Among them was a towering zombie, nearly two meters tall and powerfully built. She was clutching a severed zombie corpse in her hand, chewing voraciously.
Su Tang felt bile rise in her throat.
