- Chapter 21 - Unlucky Transmigrator
It was too late to close the door. The others opened fire first, the deafening gunshots nearly shattering Su Tang’s eardrums. She raised her Browning and fired.
She hit two zombies. One took a headshot and collapsed instantly, while the other only had its shoulder mangled. In the heat of the moment, even Su Tang, a skilled gamer, couldn’t guarantee perfect accuracy.
And this was reality, not a game. The sight of these horrifying zombies and the overwhelming stench of decay was enough to make anyone want to vomit.
Bai Yanxing reached for her feathered arrows, repelling the two zombies that charged first. But her gaze remained fixed on the colossal Giant Zombie, which continued to leisurely chew its meal, seemingly impervious to the bullets striking its body.
Crimson bl00d streamed down its skin, revealing an unusually dense network of dark red swirling patterns that resembled coiled centipedes.
This was clearly a zombie of exceptionally high rank.
Bai Yanxing had never encountered such a creature before. Her previous encounters had been limited to zombies slightly larger than Jumping Zombies. But she couldn’t afford to retreat now.
Drawing her pistol, Bai Yanxing fired two shots at the zombie’s head. The creature nimbly dodged both shots, then tossed aside its zombie snack and lunged forward.
“Get out of the way!”
Bai Yanxing shouted, braced one hand on the railing, and vaulted over the side. Even landing in the midst of the zombie horde didn’t faze him; most had already been taken down. The main challenge was the Giant Zombie, proving stubbornly difficult to defeat.
Su Tang descended the stairs. The remaining survivors continued firing, but one was swatted to the ground by the Giant Zombie’s claw, her intestines spilling from the gash in her abdomen.
Bai Yanxing noticed a barred iron door in the room. She kicked it open and scanned the interior. The room was clean, save for swirling dust motes, and devoid of zombies.
He shoved Su Tang inside.
“Help me through the gap in the door,” she ordered.
Before Su Tang could protest or react, the iron door slammed shut with a heavy clang that drew the zombies’ attention.
Bai Yanxing fired several more shots, but the Giant Zombie’s skull seemed forged from steel, impervious to bullets. She switched to her bow and arrow, aiming for the creature’s chest.
Several arrows sank deep into the flesh, yet the Giant Zombie showed no reaction.
Su Tang’s fingers trembled. What’s the difference between this and fighting a villain boss with no visible health bar?
The person outside panicked but, after a moment’s hesitation, slammed the door shut and fled on shaky legs to find reinforcements.
“How could they lock the door?!” Su Tang bit her lip, her anger palpable. She understood the man’s fear of the zombies escaping and spreading the infection, but she and Bai Yanxing were still trapped inside!
“It’s alright,” Bai Yanxing said, watching the massive figure slowly turn and approach him.
The surroundings were in ruins, all other zombies having been eliminated. Bai Yanxing slowly climbed to the top of the highest shelf.
During this time, the Giant Zombie continued to close in at lightning speed. If Su Tang hadn’t fired several shots at its legs, Bai Yanxing would have been caught around the waist and snapped in two like a panda breaking bamboo.
At this close range, if she couldn’t penetrate its skull…
Then…
It would mean this type of zombie was beyond human control.
Bai Yanxing gripped her pistol tightly and fired two more shots.
The Giant Zombie nimbly dodged them and began climbing the shelf itself. Bai Yanxing gave it no chance, repeating her previous tactic.
He pulled out her bowstring, looped it around the zombie’s neck, and braced her feet on its shoulders.
His eyes hardened as she pressed the muzzle of her pistol against the Giant Zombie’s brainstem. Her index finger tightened on the trigger.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The creature finally collapsed, but because it had been climbing the shelves, Bai Yanxing fell with it. Though she managed to roll away, parts from the shelves crashed down on her, including a sharp saw that sliced her abdomen.
“Ugh…”
Bai Yanxing winced in pain, pressing a hand to the wound. If it had just been the saw falling, it wouldn’t have been so bad, but a heavy crate filled with thick metal parts had landed on top of it.
Injured by these freak accidents, not by the zombies themselves.
What rotten luck.
At least the saw wasn’t rusty, or she might have died from tetanus.
Bai Yanxing chuckled bitterly. Before she could even sit up, Su Tang burst through the door.
“Are you okay?”
Su Tang’s eyebrows trembled. Though she knew the Female Lead had an “immortality plot armor,” witnessing this scene still filled her with fear.
So much bl00d… a normal person would have collapsed from bl00d loss by now.
Bai Yanxing’s face was deathly pale.
“I’m fine. There are bandages and sutures in my bag. Can you get them for me?”
As soon as Bai Yanxing finished speaking, she felt a tremor behind her, accompanied by a low, zombie-like growl.
Su Tang finally noticed that the zombie whose head had been blown apart wasn’t dead, and its wound was rapidly healing.
Su Tang: !
Having read the novel, she immediately recognized this type of zombie, which appeared only in the later chapters and was widely criticized by readers as a contrived addition by the author. The author had simply kept strengthening the zombies to artificially extend the plot by several hundred chapters.
Looks like I’ve really hit the jackpot, Su Tang thought. Encountering such a rare boss monster right from the start.
Dragging Bai Yanxing, who was leaving a trail of bl00d across the floor, Su Tang knew the Female Lead, who hadn’t yet obtained her divine powers, stood no chance against this colossal zombie.
Bai Yanxing pressed hard on her wound, biting her lip so fiercely it drew bl00d, as she slowly retreated with Su Tang into the room behind the iron gate.
Just as Su Tang was about to close the gate, the giant zombie lunged forward. Fortunately, she managed to lock the gate a split second before the impact.
The zombie’s collision with the gate sent a deafening crash echoing through the room, causing plaster to crumble from the walls.
Without a moment to spare, Su Tang pushed a nearby metal cabinet toward the gate. Her strength was pitifully inadequate; sweat beaded on her forehead as she barely managed to wedge it into the gap.
At that moment, Bai Yanxing, her body weakened from bl00d loss, dragged herself over to help. The trail of bl00d she left behind was gruesome.
Finally, the cabinet was wedged into place. Su Tang immediately began pushing other cabinets against the gate, her legs and feet trembling with exhaustion. Only then did they manage to barricade the gate against the zombie’s relentless attempts to break through.
Just then, Su Tang turned around. Bai Yanxing’s face was already pale, and her brown cotton jacket was now soaked in bl00d, the hem stained crimson and black.
Su Tang saw Bai Yanxing struggling to take off her backpack, her hands trembling. Remembering her earlier mention of emergency medical supplies in the bag, she reached for the zipper and rummaged through it, pulling out the medical kit.
“Those bastards…”
“When I get out of here, I’m going to make them pay!”
“They just slammed the door shut and ran off!”
As Su Tang muttered, she lifted Bai Yanxing’s shirt. Her once-fair abdomen was now covered in bl00d. She pressed down on the wound, but it was useless; the bleeding wouldn’t stop. Su Tang knew the medicinal powder in the kit was ineffective.
It needed stitches.
“Su Tang… don’t worry… your father will send help.”
Despite her weakness, Bai Yanxing tried to reassure Su Tang, urging her not to panic.
Su Tang wiped her hands and the needle with alcohol, taking a deep breath.
“I’ll stitch you up… Yanxing, don’t mind if it’s ugly. I’ve only ever stitched dolls before…”
At that moment, Su Tang desperately wished she had a system.
But alas, she wasn’t the Female Lead of a 爽文 (satisfying novel); she was just a hapless transmigrator.
