- Chapter 22 - Warming Each Other in the Embrace
Su Tang tried her best to keep her hands from trembling. She had grown rapidly during her days in the Apocalypse, but she wasn’t a medical student, and performing sutures was still a daunting task.
After a moment’s thought, Su Tang pulled out a thick coat from her bag.
“Bite on this,” she said earnestly. “It’ll prevent you from biting your tongue when the pain gets too intense.”
Bai Yanxing nodded slightly, opened her mouth, and took the sleeve between her teeth.
Su Tang carefully inserted the slender, crescent-shaped needle into her skin, slowly stitching the wound closed.
With each stitch, Bai Yanxing’s body shuddered. Fine beads of sweat glistened at her temples, and low groans escaped her lips.
The sound pained Su Tang’s heart.
Fortunately, the wound wasn’t too large. After about fifteen minutes, she finished the sutures, cleaned the area with iodine, and wrapped it in gauze.
By now, the banging outside had stopped. But when Su Tang looked up, she noticed the storeroom was overgrown with weeds.
A section of the ceiling had collapsed. The problem was…
The building had a high-vaulted ceiling, making it impossible to climb up. Moreover, since the dam was built in the river, water constantly seeped through the walls.
Drip… drip… The sound echoed in her ears.
Bai Yanxing had already lost consciousness. Su Tang rummaged through her backpack and found some dried meat and a few cold, hard steamed buns.
Even in the Apocalypse, this was considered decent food—carbohydrates and protein.
But feeding this to Bai Yanxing in her condition would be practically torturing a sick person.
Su Tang pulled out a lighter and found a dilapidated chair in the storeroom. The chair was brittle and snapped easily with a light tug.
Using the chair as fuel, she started a fire. Then, she retrieved a small porcelain cup from Bai Yanxing’s bag, likely used for tea.
She placed the cup over the flames to boil water, silently muttering to herself…
Female Lead, don’t blame me for blackening your cup. I’m just trying to make meat porridge for you.
Next, she added the steamed buns and dried meat to the boiling water.
As for the water itself, Su Tang dared not use the cold water trickling down the walls and instead used bottled water from her backpack.
Outside, there was no sign of movement. Su Tang occasionally heard gunshots, indicating that zombies were still active in other areas.
From the outside, the Hydroelectric Dam appeared deserted, suggesting someone had staged this illusion.
It was likely many refugees had fled here. After all, power outages in the Apocalypse were typically localized. Living directly in the Hydroelectric Dam would indeed eliminate the risk of power loss.
Bai Yanxing’s body temperature was plummeting rapidly. Su Tang had already burned every flammable chair in the room, and the cabinets were off-limits—they served as a barrier against the monstrous zombie.
She reached out to stroke Bai Yanxing’s cheek. Her hypothermia symptoms were unmistakable, especially now that night had fallen and snow was drifting through the gaping hole in the ceiling, forming a thin layer on the floor.
Many mountaineers had lost their lives instantly to hypothermia, making it a truly terrifying condition.
Su Tang knew she couldn’t let this continue. She took a deep breath and slowly unbuttoned her thick winter coat, then her padded jacket. Next…
It was Bai Yanxing’s turn.
She couldn’t allow her to be endangered by hypothermia, no matter what.
So, Su Tang removed her clothes, leaving them both in nothing but thin underwear—practically naked.
She then layered the padded jackets over them both, covering them completely. This way, she could use her own body heat to warm Bai Yanxing.
Even though the apocalypse had struck four years ago, the original owner of Su Tang’s body had eaten well enough to maintain some body fat, giving her a slightly fleshy feel when touched.
It was precisely because of this layer of fat that Su Tang was able to maintain her body temperature, continuously warming Bai Yanxing’s rapidly cooling skin back to a feverish heat.
Their delicate skin pressed together, each could hear the other’s heartbeat—one fast, one slow.
Su Tang had never done anything like this before, having only seen similar scenes in movies. She wasn’t sure if this was the most rational approach.
But without firewood, this was the best course of action and decision she could make.
Bai Yanxing felt as if she were trapped in a dream. She dreamed she was trudging through a frozen wasteland, her fingers numb with cold, yet her body felt neither hot nor cold—a sign of her body’s temperature regulation failing, a precursor to hypothermia.
Then, suddenly, she seemed to fall into a soft embrace. Someone held her tightly, banishing the cold and dispelling the stiffness and weakness in her limbs.
He had heard that hypothermia patients eventually feel unbearably hot, leading them to strip off their clothes and die exposed in the wilderness.
Was she experiencing these symptoms now?
No! Absolutely not.
Aside from her parents who still needed her support, the most important thing was that there were people she wanted to protect still in the world, people she wanted to cherish by her side.
Bai Yanxing’s eyes snapped open. The first thing she saw was a mass of soft, dark hair. In that moment, her mind was clear, and her senses were sharp.
Someone was holding her.
Slender arms encircled her waist, clinging tightly. Soft, tender skin radiated faint warmth, desperately trying to maintain her body temperature.
Even the slightest movement of her abdomen sent sharp pain through her. She pressed her hand against it, no longer feeling the warm flow of bl00d. It seemed the bleeding had stopped.
If it had continued, she likely would have already been a cold corpse. The massive bl00d loss had plunged her into hypothermia.
Bl00d was the most vital substance for sustaining life. Even a small loss could be fatal.
Bai Yanxing slowly leaned closer, wincing with each movement. Despite the pain, she wrapped her arms around the person in her embrace.
She could clearly feel the delicate, warm sensation of their skin pressed together, as smooth and supple as touching fine silk.
Though they often slept together, they usually wore thin pajamas, never quite like this…
Completely bare.
Bai Yanxing rested her chin against Su Tang’s forehead, gently nuzzling her. Then, as if taking advantage of her sleep, she made a bold decision.
His slightly dry, cold lips brushed against the tip of Su Tang’s nose.
This wasn’t gratitude…
This was genuine affection and greed.
Sneaking around like this… I’m such a pervert, Bai Yanxing thought, pressing her lips together and silently scolding herself.
His slender fingertips danced across Su Tang’s smooth back, as if by doing so, she could absorb more of her warmth.
Su Tang was so soft; holding her felt like cradling a doll.
But this warmth couldn’t be indulged indefinitely. Once her body had recovered somewhat, Bai Yanxing slowly propped herself up.
He wrapped another layer of bandages around her abdomen before finally managing to stand.
The movement startled Su Tang awake.
“Get dressed. We can’t stay here forever.”
Su Jianyu was fiercely protective of her daughter. If she hadn’t arrived by now, it could only mean she was facing trouble herself.
As expected, taking the power plant wouldn’t be easy.
