- Transmigrating as a Cannon Fodder in the Apocalypse, Seducing the Mad Female Lead
- Chapter 25 - Protecting the Female Lead is Our Inescapable Duty!
In the deep, still night, only the campfire crackled, its orange-red flames casting harsh shadows across the men’s faces, revealing a ruthless edge.
“The Boss executed Old Zhang,” one of them said, drawing on a crude, pungent cigarette that stung her throat but kept her alert.
In the Apocalypse, arable land was a precious commodity. Allocating a plot for tobacco cultivation was a rare luxury. Those who possessed tobacco had earned it through significant contributions, as the exchange points required to obtain it were exorbitant.
“All she did was close a door! She even saw Su Tang hide in the other room before she shut it! How could the Boss do this?” The woman slammed her fist into the concrete floor in fury.
“Just because she failed to protect Bai Yanxing?”
“She’s just a greenhorn! How can killing a few Jumping Zombies make her a revered general?”
The others remained silent.
“Chen Bin is dead. Su Tang clearly has feelings for Bai Yanxing. If this continues, what if the Boss falls one day? The Black Wolf Gang will become this woman’s inheritance!”
“Then we’ll all have to take orders from her.”
The words sparked defiant expressions on the men’s faces.
While they might not be able to defeat the Jumping Zombies, they absolutely refused to accept a woman younger than themselves as their Chief!
“So, what do you suggest we do?” one of them asked.
“I have a plan. Every few hours, someone from our group goes to deliver charcoal to Su Tang, right?”
“We’ll use that opportunity to cut her with a knife smeared with Zombie bl00d. Even if she doesn’t get infected, she’ll turn into a Zombie anyway… and we’ll get rid of that b1tch Su Tang in the process. Two birds with one stone, wouldn’t you say?”
One of the women stood up and stomped her foot.
“You’re insane!”
“If you kill Su Tang, Su Jianyu will come after us with everything he’s got!”
Clearly, everyone in the Black Wolf Gang feared Su Jianyu. After all, she had built the Shelter from the ground up, and they were all just her subordinates.
“If you’re too scared, then keep your opinions to yourself. When this works, just keep your mouth shut and you’ll be doing us a favor.”
The woman rose and strode toward the young woman tending the charcoal, a ruthless glint in her eyes.
Making charcoal was a tedious process, so the charcoal they delivered to Su Tang was freshly raked from the bonfire.
Every few hours, the charcoal would turn into white ash, so…
It needed to be replenished regularly.
Even late at night, Su Tang kept a kerosene lamp lit for convenience. The dim, flickering flame cast their shadows dancing on the wall.
Bai Yanxing slept soundly.
Perhaps because of her injuries, she needed deep sleep to recover. Su Tang held her by the waist, her nose pressed against her neck.
Having thoroughly cleaned him, Bai Yanxing no longer carried the scent of bl00d, instead smelling refreshingly clean.
Truly the Female Lead, Su Tang couldn’t help but think. Even at a time like this, her body still carries a faint, lingering fragrance. I wonder if it’s her natural scent.
Just as Su Tang was drifting off to sleep, a soft knock echoed from the iron gate—one tap, then another.
“Who is it…?” Su Tang asked, a hint of impatience in her voice.
“Charcoal delivery. Please open the gate.”
The man’s voice was unfamiliar, not the same as the previous deliveryman. But Su Tang didn’t dwell on it.
The Black Wolf Gang had too many members for her to remember them all.
“Just pass it through the small iron gate,” Su Tang said, rising to her feet. She draped a thin coat over her shoulders and handed the nearly extinguished brazier to the man.
Without the warmth from this small brazier, the night would have been even more unbearable.
As Su Tang reached out to pass the brazier through the gate, a pair of rough, calloused hands suddenly seized her wrist.
“Miss Su, open the door.”
The man’s deep voice sent shivers down Su Tang’s spine. Her instincts screamed that this couldn’t be good.
“What do you want?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. She wasn’t about to open the door without knowing why.
I have to protect the Female Lead’s safety!
“Bai Yanxing is likely infected. The Boss ordered us to quietly execute her tonight and announce he’s still in quarantine. The Boss doesn’t want to upset her mother and slow down the turbine repairs.”
The woman clearly knew the inner workings of the Black Wolf Gang, making her story sound convincing.
Someone less shrewd might easily fall for it.
Su Tang: …
While this might seem like a strategic move for the greater good, knowing Su Jianyu, she doubted she would send assassins after providing such a secure quarantine room.
Su Tang kept her gun close at all times. As she got out of bed, her hand already gripped the weapon.
Now, she flicked off the safety and pressed the cold barrel against the man’s arm.
“I don’t care if you were sent by my father. If you try to harm Bai Yanxing, you’ll regret it!”
Before the woman could react, Su Tang fired.
If she hesitated any longer, she would try to seize her gun.
The bullet tore through the man’s arm, forcing a pained groan through her clenched teeth.
The bloodcurdling scream jolted everyone awake. Black Wolf Gang members outside the corridor rushed over, carrying kerosene lamps. The power plant hadn’t been repaired yet, so electricity remained cut off.
At night, the area was pitch-black. Without kerosene lamps and flashlights, visibility was virtually zero.
Bai Yanxing woke up instantly and was about to sit up when Su Tang turned around.
“Don’t get up. Just lie back down.”
“Are there zombies outside?” Bai Yanxing asked, her eyes filled with concern as she scanned Su Tang in the dim lamplight, thinking there might be undiscovered zombies. Seeing her fair skin without a trace of injury, she finally exhaled in relief.
“No zombies, but someone wants to kill you,” Su Tang said bluntly. The imposter’s disguise had been convincing enough; the original owner of this body would have let her in without a second thought.
But Su Tang was not the original owner, and her every action revolved around protecting the Female Lead. This made it easy to see through the lies.
“He grabbed my hand, so I shot him.”
Bai Yanxing nodded, but the sudden movement of getting up had strained her wound, causing her to wince and clutch her side.
“You got up too quickly,” Su Tang said with a gentle smile, tapping the tip of her nose.
“I was worried about you,” Bai Yanxing said, lowering her head, a hint of embarrassment coloring her cheeks.
“It’s okay,” Su Tang reassured him, patting her chest. “You can sleep soundly. I’m here. They won’t hurt you.”
She vowed to kill every zombie that came her way—one by one, or two by two. If they were human, she’d aim for their hands.
It was undeniable: the apocalypse forced rapid growth.
Su Tang had gone from trembling as she fired her gun to acting without hesitation, all after just a few harrowing experiences of being chased and nearly bitten by zombies.
