- Chapter 26 - Half the Candy for You, Half for Me
Given the commotion outside, Bai Yanxing was wide awake. She slowly put on her shoes.
Out of caution, Su Tang didn’t open the iron gate.
A crowd had gathered outside.
“What’s going on here?”
The group included Su Jianyu. After all, this was her daughter’s room, and when assigning quarters for the night, she had naturally chosen the lounge near Bai Yanxing’s isolation room.
In case of an emergency, she could grab her pistol and eliminate Bai Yanxing herself. With the man’s agility and reflexes, if infected, he’d undoubtedly become an elite zombie.
“Boss… this guy wasn’t delivering firewood. Miss Su shot him…”
The onlookers, clueless about the situation, could only speculate based on what they had witnessed.
Seeing her cheap old woman arrive, Su Tang opened the iron gate and stepped out, unafraid of a public confrontation.
“I shot her because she was trying to kill Yanxing.”
“Dad, I never imagined so many members of the Black Wolf Gang would disobey your orders.”
In the novel, the Black Wolf Gang was merely an early-stage villainous shelter, existing solely to provide experience points for the Female Lead.
Its internal unity was far from solid.
It’s no wonder so many people openly defied Su Jianyu’s orders.
Su Tang felt her words were dripping with sarcasm. She had to admit, this tactic of diverting blame was remarkably effective.
Su Jianyu’s gaze immediately shifted to the woman lying on the ground. Her friend had already helped her up and was wrapping her arm in a bandage to stop the bleeding.
A gunshot at such close range meant the woman would likely lose her hand without immediate medical attention. Worse, if the wound became infected, amputation would be necessary.
“Why did you want to kill Bai Yanxing?” Su Jianyu asked, her eyes filled with genuine curiosity as she approached.
The woman pressed her lips together, refusing to answer.
“Very well,” Su Jianyu said with a smile. “If you won’t speak, I have ways to make you talk. Men, tie her to the pillar and don’t give her any food.”
Faced with Su Jianyu’s command, no one dared to object. They nodded and carried out her orders.
Once the commotion had subsided, Su Jianyu turned to Bai Yanxing. She understood perfectly why these women had targeted him: fear.
They feared this newcomer might become her heir.
Su Jianyu had once favored Chen Bin, despite her lack of strength. But if her daughter liked him, that was all that mattered.
He had even been willing to groom Chen Bin as the Shelter’s second-in-command, but now…
With Chen Bin dead, it was indeed time to test a new successor.
Many might think it premature to consider succession now, but that wasn’t entirely true. In the Apocalypse, every second of survival was a matter of chance.
He needed a capable successor ready at any moment. Should Su Jianyu meet an untimely end, this successor could take over the Black Wolf Gang and care for Su Tang.
His gaze fell on Bai Yanxing, though she still harbored some reservations about the newcomer, who had only been at the Shelter for a few days.
But what could she do? Su Tang liked him.
As her father, she couldn’t play the role of the meddling father-in-law, trying to break them apart.
“Are you alright?” Su Jianyu asked tentatively.
“I’m fine…” Bai Yanxing shook her head slightly, though her complexion remained pale. “Thank you for your trouble.”
“No trouble at all. Once you’ve recovered, I have a task for you.”
With that, Su Jianyu turned her attention away from Bai Yanxing and rummaged through her pocket, pulling out a handful of fruit candies.
“Tangtang, these were found in the Dam’s office. They’re still dry. I tried one earlier—they haven’t gone bad.”
Su Tang gazed at the pile of candies in her palm: orange, strawberry, and grape flavors.
The wrappers remained vibrant, untouched by the Apocalypse. Though these candies had been produced four years ago and were technically past their expiration date, they hadn’t spoiled, likely due to the excessive preservatives.
Su Jianyu had meticulously prepared these for her daughter, a testament to her devotion as a father. It was only her misguided actions that had earned her the Female Lead’s relentless pursuit.
“Want to try one?”
Having been woken up, neither of them could fall back asleep.
Su Tang leaned against the bed, kicked off her shoes, and rested her white-socked feet on a small stool to warm them.
“Your dad gave these to you.”
Bai Yanxing blinked slowly. It had been ages since he’d last had candy. The last time was at school, when the class monitor had passed around a handful of sweets for her birthday.
Bai Yanxing remembered it clearly: White Rabbit creamy candies, their rich milky flavor lingering on her tongue.
Candy was a symbol of childhood innocence, something Bai Yanxing had long lost. But before she could say another word, Su Tang had already selected a grape-flavored candy. She tore open the wrapper, releasing a faint artificial grape scent into the air.
In the real world, this candy would likely be the target of scathing online reviews due to its artificial flavoring and excessive preservatives.
But…
In the Apocalypse, it was a treasure beyond measure.
“Open your mouth,” Su Tang said, holding the candy.
“I don’t want it. This is your dad’s…” Bai Yanxing’s refusal was cut short as Su Tang pressed the candy between her lips.
A faint sweetness spread, tinged with the tartness of purple grapes.
Before Bai Yanxing could swallow, Su Tang leaned closer, cupping her cheeks, and gently pressed her lips against the candy.
The scene was utterly captivating.
“Half for you, half for me. Fair enough?” Su Tang murmured softly.
It was indeed perfectly fair, but how could one divide a single candy?
As Bai Yanxing’s mind raced with these thoughts, Su Tang suddenly bit into the candy. It wasn’t a hard candy, but rather a soft gummy with a chewy center.
To Su Tang, it was merely a gummy that had expired four years ago. Having only recently transmigrated, she still needed to mentally prepare herself to eat expired food.
But after taking a bite, Su Tang found it wasn’t so bad after all. She had seen far uglier zombies.
Why would she be afraid of eating an expired candy?
Their lips brushed gently together, like an unconscious caress. The sweet grape flavor flooded her mouth, making her heart flutter.
How did Su Tang know I liked grape? Bai Yanxing wondered.
He guessed it must have been a random, lucky choice. Still, she accepted it gladly, never refusing Su Tang again.
Sharing the candy this way seemed like the perfect solution.
The sweetness lingered on her tongue.
Bai Yanxing couldn’t help but lightly press her lips together, savoring both the sweet taste and the soft touch of Su Tang’s lips.
After rinsing her mouth, Bai Yanxing drifted back to sleep, her mood lifted by the candy.
Even in her dreams, she felt like she was sleeping on a bed of grapes.
He completely forgot about the pain from her wounds.
When she woke again, the sky was fully bright. Su Jianyu had sent someone to check on Bai Yanxing and take her temperature.
Once it was confirmed she had no infection, Bai Yanxing retrieved her bow and arrows and pistol from the storage room where she had left them.
