- Chapter 27 - Our Relationship Doesn't Need Thanks
Half a month later.
The power grid had been connected to the high tower, and the entire Shelter had successfully upgraded to a Base. No longer lifeless, streetlights illuminated the night, and the curfew was pushed back.
Brilliant lights adorned the entrances of each tin-roofed house, creating a unique charm.
The mottled rust corroding the houses couldn’t dim these flickering lights.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Su Tang said, arms crossed, admiring the scene. With electricity, the trams could run again, and gasoline resources were no longer so critically scarce.
This proved that electricity was indeed a pivotal technology that allowed humanity to embrace civilization.
And it was the most indispensable resource.
“Mm,” Bai Yanxing replied.
The wound on her abdomen had healed, and the stitches had been removed a few days prior, leaving only a rather unsightly scar. But she didn’t mind; surviving was all that mattered. Whether there was a scar or not was insignificant.
“I’m going out tomorrow to take on a mission. Want to come?” Bai Yanxing asked Su Tang.
He couldn’t stay idle for long. The only reason he’d remained in the Base these past few days was to recover from her injury. Now that she was healed, she was eager to get back into action.
As for why?
The reason was simple enough.
Humans can’t remain idle forever. Prolonged periods without facing zombies easily lead to complacency.
Bai Yanxing had never wanted to be seen as weak, hiding behind the Shelter’s high walls and enjoying the fleeting peace bought with the lives of her comrades.
Since she could kill zombies, she would rush to the front lines.
“Of course I’ll come,” Su Tang replied.
Her marksmanship had improved significantly in recent days, and she was now quite confident in her abilities.
So what if they were zombies? They couldn’t escape the judgment of The Truth.
“Good. I’ll reserve a spot for you in my team.”
Bai Yanxing had recently been promoted. Su Jianyu had given her command of an entire squad, ostensibly to hone her leadership skills.
But anyone with a shred of intelligence could see that Su Jianyu was grooming Bai Yanxing as her successor.
Su Jianyu truly doted on her daughter. When Su Tang had been infatuated with Chen Bin, she had arranged for Chen Bin to become the leader of an elite squad.
Now that Chen Bin was dead, this coveted position had fallen to Bai Yanxing.
A newcomer who had only been at the Base for a few months? Ha, the irony was almost laughable!
The next day, dawn broke bright and clear.
Bai Yanxing watched a green-painted pickup truck pull up in front of him. The team leader usually sat in the passenger seat.
But she shook her head in refusal.
Instead, she joined the others in the back of the pickup, where two people could squeeze in.
Su Tang naturally slipped into the back seat through the other door, moving with the agility of a cat.
She closed the door.
“Yanxing, does your abdomen really not hurt anymore?” Su Tang leaned closer, her eyes still filled with concern. If her wound were to reopen during a zombie fight, bl00d would splatter everywhere—a gruesome scene she couldn’t bear to imagine.
“It’s been half a month already. Didn’t you check the wound a few days ago?”
The two didn’t bathe together every day. Though Su Tang cherished their intimate moments, everyone needed privacy, especially during menstruation.
“It’s healing well.”
“But you wouldn’t mind if I checked again, right?”
Bai Yanxing glanced at the driver, who was focused intently on the road ahead.
A blush bloomed on her cheeks, as pink as a lotus flower. She knew exactly what this little pervert wanted and was about to shake her head in refusal.
But Su Tang had already leaned in closer.
“Won’t you let me see?”
“I’m the one who stitched you up, you know. I want to see how my handiwork is holding up.”
Faced with Su Tang’s fervent enthusiasm, Bai Yanxing was momentarily at a loss for words. After some hesitation, she finally leaned in slowly.
She unzipped her down jacket, revealing a gray wool shirt underneath.
This wool shirt had been issued to her after she became a team leader. Woven from genuine wool, its craftsmanship was somewhat rough, but…
For the first time, Bai Yanxing experienced the benefits of the Black Wolf Gang’s pack-like hierarchy.
Su Tang glanced at the two figures intently focused on the road ahead. She lifted the hem of her shirt slightly, revealing a jagged scar that stood out against her fair skin.
But it had already faded considerably.
As Su Tang’s fingertip gently traced the scar, Bai Yanxing’s body trembled.
“It itches…” she murmured, lowering her voice. She pulled the wool shirt back down, the warmth covering the back of her hand.
Su Tang withdrew her hand.
“Looks like my stitching skills are still pretty good.”
She was quite pleased with the result. Fortunately, she had practiced sewing dolls in the past. During idle moments, she had even read a few wilderness survival manuals, learning how to make stitches look neater.
“Thank you,” Bai Yanxing said earnestly. “Without you, I could never have stitched it up so perfectly in that situation.”
“Don’t mention it,” Su Tang replied. “We don’t need such formalities between us now.”
Su Tang’s heart fluttered with sweetness, rising and falling with the car’s bumpy ride.
They were practically lovers now, even if no one else knew. As long as she knew it in her heart, that was enough.
But with her bond with the Female Lead growing stronger, it seemed like they were ready for the next step.
Only a union of spirit and soul, possessing each other’s bodies, would truly bind the Female Lead to her side forever.
Su Tang couldn’t help but think this.
At the same time, she began mentally formulating her next perfect plan.
Last time it was a book; this time it would be a DVD. She hoped she could still find one.
Su Tang silently prayed.
This was a plot point from the original novel, though when she’d read it, she’d wanted to complain: DVDs? Those things are practically extinct now!
They’re rarer than dodos!
But the author had declared it existed, so it existed.
There was no arguing with that.
The car re-entered the city, where many roads were impassable due to damage.
However, the Black Wolf Gang frequently entered and exited the city, so they had recently felled timber from the Hydroelectric Dam and transported it to build crude bridges, allowing pickup trucks to cross.
They entered the city unimpeded.
This time, their target was the underground warehouses of several shopping malls. The Black Wolf Gang’s scouts had already reconnoitered, discovering several locked areas within the warehouses that no one had opened.
Because it was a relatively hidden location, ordinary people wouldn’t be able to find it.
Bai Yanxing stepped out of the vehicle, feeling a lingering warmth on her abdomen. She couldn’t resist pressing her hand against it, then quickly withdrew her fingers.
Wait… what ridiculous thoughts have been occupying my mind all day?
He needed to focus on killing zombies.
During the outbreak, shopping malls would have been among the first places to be ravaged. The remaining zombie population inside was substantial. Otherwise, how could there still be untouched inventory?
Bai Yanxing’s current objective was to clear a path. Each member of her small team carried three homemade bombs. In the unfortunate event of being bitten, they could take the zombies down with them.
