- Transmigrating as a Cannon Fodder in the Apocalypse, Seducing the Mad Female Lead
- Chapter 29 - Her Favoritism
The DVD cover was a vast expanse of green, the kind that brought peace to the soul. But that wasn’t the most important part.
Printed at the center of the plastic case were two women. Su Tang had seen this movie in her previous life—it was incredibly provocative.
For a film to depict women breaking free from the shackles and constraints of that era and pursuing their own desires for love was already remarkable.
Without hesitation, Su Tang slipped the DVD into her backpack, also grabbing a couple of horror movies for good measure.
Even though there were no ghosts in this world, there were zombies.
Finally, her gaze landed on the DVD player, her heart filled with anticipation. Once she got it home, all she’d need was a TV.
In the novel’s plot, the Female Lead repeatedly deceived Bai Yanxing, making her clear out shopping malls filled with DVDs and TVs.
His sole purpose was to prepare a romantic date—without lifting a finger herself.
It was the Female Lead who fought the zombies while she simply picked up the loot behind her.
At least Su Tang had gotten Bai Yanxing to bring an entire squad with him, a far cry from the Female Lead’s hidden saintly-bitchy behavior.
The DVD player felt heavy in Su Tang’s bag, and she worried about it getting damaged if she dropped it. She returned to the ground and carefully placed it on her car seat, finally letting out a satisfied sigh. She patted the slightly worn DVD player.
“Darling, I’m counting on you to boost the Female Lead’s favorability! You’ve got to pull through for me!”
With that, she closed the car door.
After reminding the guards outside to be careful not to sit on her DVD player, Su Tang finally headed back into the mall.
The first floor was mostly empty. After four years since the zombie outbreak, anything worth scavenging had long been taken.
However, the Black Wolf Gang had recently restored power to the area, making some appliances usable again. Refrigerators, microwaves, and rice cookers could all be brought back.
Bai Yanxing knew there wasn’t much left on the upper floors of the mall. Their primary target this time was the underground warehouse.
Taking a deep breath, she said, “Put on your gas masks. The warehouse has no ventilation. If the zombie corpses have decayed, they might release Red Mist.”
Inhaling Red Mist could cause near-instant mutation.
Everyone nodded, donned their gas masks, and Bai Yanxing led the way down the stairs. The scouting team had previously drawn a rough map of the area.
The main gate had been pried open, and with a gentle push, they could access the underground levels.
Su Tang hurried to put on her gas mask and rushed after Bai Yanxing.
Speaking through the gas masks was difficult, producing only muffled sounds.
Su Tang silently followed the Female Lead, determined to play her support role well. However, the entire underground mall was eerily quiet. Bai Yanxing followed the map’s indicators, advancing steadily.
She encountered no zombies.
This was too strange.
Even so, Bai Yanxing ordered her team to remain vigilant. She raised her hand and pulled open the warehouse’s iron bolt. Inside, they found rows upon rows of supplies.
Though slightly dusty, the goods were still brand new. Bai Yanxing sighed in relief, but just then, a Jumping Zombie hidden among the cardboard boxes sprang out.
“Fire!”
The Vice Captain beside Bai Yanxing shouted, but an arrow moved faster, piercing the Jumping Zombie’s neck.
The zombie collapsed awkwardly to the ground. Bai Yanxing raised her hand to stop her team members from firing.
She strode forward, planted her foot on the zombie’s head, drew her dagger, and swiftly finished it off.
“Don’t fire indiscriminately,” she warned. “It could attract all the zombies in the mall.”
Bai Yanxing turned to reward the archer, but her eyes widened as she saw Su Tang holding a compound bow, a radiant smile dancing in her eyes.
As if to say, “Darling, I’m waiting for my reward.”
Bai Yanxing hadn’t expected Su Tang to use the compound bow to correct the zombie’s trajectory. She retrieved the arrow from the creature’s body, wiped it clean with a cloth tied to her waist, and handed it to Su Tang. Bai Yanxing’s voice, muffled by her gas mask, sounded like two smooth chess pieces clinking together.
“Next time, aim a little higher. That way, you’ll hit the brain.”
Su Tang took the arrow and slid it back into the quiver on her back.
“Thank you for the guidance, Teacher Bai. But… what kind of reward are you planning to give me?”
Su Tang’s eyes were large and bright, like those of an innocent fawn in the forest. Who would guess she had just taken down a Jumping Zombie?
“What kind of reward do you want?” Bai Yanxing asked, crossing her arms. Her cold, elegant face was mostly hidden by the gas mask, but her expressive eyes and delicate brows remained visible.
Su Tang pursed her lips and stood on tiptoe.
“You’ll find out when we get back.”
Su Tang’s voice wasn’t quiet; after all, speaking softly through a gas mask was impossible.
Yet an unspoken intimacy flowed between them, drawing the attention of the entire team, who couldn’t help but glance sideways.
“I understand… Don’t get so close. Everyone’s watching,” Bai Yanxing said, visibly embarrassed.
“What’s there to be afraid of? Everyone knows about us,” Su Tang teased, though she had already toned down her actions considerably. After all, flaunting affection in front of zombies was practically begging to be eaten—a classic death flag in novels.
Having learned from their experience opening the warehouse, Bai Yanxing grew more cautious. However, the remaining warehouses also turned out to be zombie-free.
Though strange, Bai Yanxing didn’t hesitate. She signaled the others to load the collected goods onto the carts.
“I have something I’d like you to help me transport back. Would you mind?” Su Tang asked, sidling up to Bai Yanxing as she watched the team members efficiently move the cargo with handcarts. She reached out and hooked her fingers around her deerskin-gloved hand.
Even through the thick gloves, their clasped hands still conveyed each other’s warmth.
“What is it?”
“A television.”
After finally getting her hands on a DVD, Su Tang naturally wanted to pair it with a 4K high-definition TV. Her heart fluttered with excitement, her hands rubbing together like a fly.
Now she could watch the romance and horror DVDs she had been preparing for so long with the Female Lead.
Though they couldn’t go to a movie theater—something that would have been the simplest thing for ordinary couples before the Apocalypse—she could at least try to make up for it.
“Alright…”
“If you want, Su Tang.”
Bai Yanxing had never been one for fairness or impartiality. Since she had successfully completed the mission, bringing back a few small items for her beloved to the Base was only natural.
This was her bias, a unique favoritism reserved for the one she loved.
The TV wasn’t in the warehouse but in a shop on the first floor. Returning to the shop, Su Tang chose a foreign brand that could connect to a DVD player.
Most Chinese people no longer used DVDs, so she had to opt for a foreign brand. Still, she was quite satisfied with the 4K display.
Finally, she could snuggle up with the Female Lead in their small room and watch TV.
Even in the Apocalypse, life could still be pretty good.
