- Chapter 30 - The Haunting Female Lead
Bai Yanxing cautioned her team members to be careful as they set down the television. The group froze, clearly stunned.
Having worked with Bai Yanxing on several missions, they knew her to be a woman of unwavering integrity, unlike other squad leaders who often smuggled personal items back to base. She was always scrupulously honest.
Why was this time different?
And it was just a useless television.
Even though it had power, there was no signal. Meaning, even if they brought it back, it could only play static—completely pointless.
Despite their confusion, no one dared to ask questions. They carefully placed the LCD TV on two soft bundles of cargo before finally exhaling in relief.
As Su Tang was about to board the vehicle, she noticed a woman approaching with a bow and arrows.
“Captain!” she called out, waving. Her handsome features drew frequent glances from both women and women, who lingered on her face.
“Hello,” Bai Yanxing nodded. She seemed to recognize him, though the impression was faint. How could she remember someone she’d only met once or twice months ago?
Probably just someone from the same base, she thought.
“Don’t you remember me?” Lin Shen stepped forward, her eyes filled with eager anticipation.
“No, I don’t.”
Su Tang: !
Dear Female Lead, even if you don’t remember, I do!
She couldn’t stand idly by any longer. Like a nimble little rabbit, she darted in front of Bai Yanxing, preventing any further contact between the two.
“You saved me last time, and I haven’t had a chance to thank you properly. I barely survived. If the Black Wolf Gang hadn’t taken me in, I’d probably have been bitten by zombies long ago.”
Lin Shen’s smile revealed her pearly white teeth. In the apocalypse, her greatest asset was her striking beauty.
“So it was you,” Bai Yanxing said. Her memory wasn’t particularly poor; a single reminder was enough. She gazed at the woman before her, recalling their first meeting during her initial mission.
“That’s right. I’m Lin Shen. I’d like to get to know you, Captain.” Lin Shen extended her hand.
But before she could grasp it, someone moved faster. Su Tang seized Bai Yanxing’s wrist, her possessive desire nearly overflowing from her eyes.
Lin Shen startled, feeling as if she were being stared down by a fierce little wolf guarding its prey, refusing to let anyone touch it.
“Miss Su… I just wanted to get to know Captain Bai. I didn’t mean anything by it.”
Lin Shen retreated a few steps, still wary of the notoriously cruel Su Tang. As the Chief’s daughter, she wielded unchecked authority within the Black Wolf Gang, able to punish anyone as she pleased.
“Well, you’ve already met him,” Su Tang retorted. “Surely you know Bai Yanxing’s name by now?”
Su Tang pursed her lips, her delicate features resembling those of a stubbornly aloof cat.
“Alright, that’s enough,” Bai Yanxing interrupted. “Let’s head back. If we linger any longer, the zombies will start wandering out.”
Bai Yanxing wrapped an arm around Su Tang’s waist and pulled her back to the pickup truck. She paid no attention to Lin Shen, despite the man’s handsome looks—the kind that would undoubtedly make her popular with women. But that was irrelevant to him.
Bai Yanxing still carried the ring in her pocket. How could she possibly develop feelings for anyone else?
As the couple’s figures receded into the distance, an indescribable ache began to spread through Lin Shen’s heart, like spilled vinegar stinging her chest.
He… she felt like she had lost something precious.
The car bumped along the rough road, but fortunately, they made it back to the Base before nightfall. Since getting electricity, the Black Wolf Gang had been able to use searchlights to scan the camp perimeter for wandering zombies.
Bai Yanxing stepped out of the car.
He was about to carry the television herself when someone eagerly carried it to her doorstep.
“Thank you for your help,” Bai Yanxing said politely.
“No trouble at all,” the team members grinned, pleased to show off in front of their Boss.
Bai Yanxing didn’t understand why Su Tang wanted a television, but even if she just wanted it as a decoration, she would gladly transport it for her.
Pushing the cardboard box, Bai Yanxing carried the television inside.
Turning around, she saw Su Tang standing before him, holding a DVD player.
“When did you get that?” Bai Yanxing asked, stunned. She reminded her of a busy magpie building its nest, always producing unexpected materials to decorate their home.
“When we split up, you were clearing out the first floor of the mall.”
Su Tang’s cheeks flushed slightly as she clutched the DVD, turning her head away in embarrassment, feeling like a thief.
“No wonder you wanted a TV,” Bai Yanxing finally realized. She found an outlet in the room, plugged in the TV, and waited for Su Tang to hand over the DVD.
“Tell me, what movie did you find?”
Bai Yanxing slipped off her heavy leather boots and put on slippers. With her long hair loosened, she lost some of the harshness of the Apocalypse, gaining a touch of cold elegance.
If she took a refreshing shower too, Su Tang thought, I might not be able to resist kissing her.
So, Su Tang guarded her backpack as fiercely as she would a birthday gift, determined not to let the Female Lead open it.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
“Let’s shower first!”
Members returning from missions always received special treatment, even when it came to showering. After all, it would be miserable to fight zombies all day, covered in grime, without even a hot shower.
Su Tang pushed Bai Yanxing into the bathroom.
Bai Yanxing didn’t resist, letting Su Tang strip off her clothes. But when Su Tang’s hand brushed against the bulge of the ring box at her waist, Bai Yanxing’s body stiffened.
Damn it!
Su Tang had forgotten she’d hidden the ring, making it easy for Yanxing’s keen-nosed cat to find it immediately.
“What’s this?”
“So, you’ve been hiding things from me behind my back?”
Su Tang’s tone was slightly fierce, but a closer listen revealed she was only teasing.
Still, her fingers clamped down on the black ring box. The smile froze on her face as she held it up to her eyes, stunned. She recognized what it was.
Though many who had survived the Apocalypse now associated the outside world with dilapidated buildings and streets reeking of rotting corpses, Su Tang was a transmigrator. Her memories of these jewelry items remained vivid.
“Open it. It’s for you.”
The bathroom’s soundproofing was excellent, allowing Su Tang to clearly hear Bai Yanxing’s slightly raised tone, which sounded exactly like an alluring older sister’s voice, utterly captivating.
Seeing Su Tang frozen like she’d been petrified by Medusa’s gaze, Bai Yanxing gently shook her head. She stepped forward, took Su Tang’s hand, and guided her to open the ring box.
Inside lay a delicate, pink cat paw, its platinum setting gleaming against the cold metal.
