- Chapter 32 - Stealing a Kiss
Time passed unnoticed. Outside, snow must have begun to fall, as the howling wind roared in Bai Yanxing’s ears.
Bai Yanxing watched until the end credits rolled, the names of the film’s crew slowly appearing against the black screen.
As the gentle music faded, the producer’s credits reached the bottom, and the screen went dark, ending the film.
Just as Bai Yanxing was about to stand up, she felt a weight on her shoulder. She realized Su Tang had fallen asleep long ago, her arm draped around him, her breathing deep and even.
The fact that Su Tang had chosen these particular films from among the thousands at the DVD store showed how much she loved them.
Could it be that she’s seen them so many times before that they’ve lost their novelty and excitement, causing her to fall asleep? Bai Yanxing wondered inwardly.
Regardless of her speculation, she gently took Su Tang’s slender wrist and slowly, carefully removed her hand from her arm.
Then, she tiptoed to the television, ejected the DVD, and placed it back in its case. The neatly stacked discs were arranged beneath the TV cabinet.
Though called a TV cabinet, it was actually a small wooden desk.
Su Jianyu hadn’t brought any particularly large or elaborate furniture back to the Base, as it would have been a waste of manpower and resources. Most of the furniture was made on-site to save time.
Bai Yanxing returned to the edge of the bed.
Looking at Su Tang’s disheveled sleeping posture, she sighed helplessly.
He reached out, wrapping one arm around her waist and the other around the bend of her knees.
He carried her to the other side of the bed and gently set her down. But in that instant, the scene from the disc flashed through her mind.
That kissing position had been so bold and unrestrained.
Gazing at the sleeping woman before him, Bai Yanxing suddenly felt the urge to try it herself.
He lowered her head, her hair brushing against Su Tang’s soft cheek. For a moment, she felt a pang of guilt and quickly brushed the stray strands aside, tucking them behind her ear.
He leaned down, pressing greedy kisses against her plump lips, but refrained from crossing any boundaries.
I’m not a clever woman, she thought. I can’t lure my prey into the abyss. I can only clumsily try to please someone.
Even when doing these things, she only dared to act furtively.
Bai Yanxing was about to leave when Su Tang’s arm suddenly wrapped around her neck. Her ink-black eyes opened, gleaming like a starry night sky.
The warm yellow lamplight reflected in Su Tang’s eyes.
“You just stole a kiss from me…”
A smug glint shone in her eyes. Such a rare sight—the Female Lead losing control and overstepping boundaries.
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t resist for a moment…”
Bai Yanxing’s breath quickened, her ears flushing crimson with embarrassment. It felt like being caught red-handed, a gun pointed at her for stealing food.
“There’s nothing shameful about this.”
Su Tang’s eyes sparkled with amusement as she reached out to hook her arm around Bai Yanxing’s slender neck. Tilting her head back, she returned the kiss.
Her lips were warm and soft, bolder and more reckless than Bai Yanxing’s hesitant touches.
Irresistible.
“Su Tang…”
Bai Yanxing’s words slurred, her breathing ragged. Yet she couldn’t bear to pull away, surrendering to this intoxicating desire.
The weather grew colder by the day. Since Bai Yanxing didn’t have a mission today, she woke up to a bright morning.
Outside, a vast expanse of snow stretched as far as the eye could see, and the windows were covered in intricate frost patterns, each pane connected to the next like a cluster of blooming white snow lotuses.
“You’re awake?” Su Tang sat in a chair, having brought back breakfast from the cafeteria. Today’s meal was particularly lavish, featuring fish soup and a small piece of roasted pork sprinkled with chili powder.
Bai Yanxing’s shoulder-length hair was disheveled, sticking out in all directions like a bundle of tied straw.
“Why are you up so early today?” she asked, standing up. She hadn’t slept this deeply and peacefully in ages. Her mind felt fully rested, unlike before, when she had to keep her hand on her bowstring even in her sleep, ready to draw an arrow at any moment to fend off lurking zombies.
“Because I don’t have to go out of the Base today,” Su Tang replied truthfully. “I wanted to practice horseback riding.” She felt her relationship with the Female Lead was close enough for now, so she could focus on maxing out her survival skills.
“Alright, I’ll come with you,” Bai Yanxing said after washing up. She sat down at the table, and Su Tang forked a piece of pork over to him.
“Try this. It’s a new recipe the chef’s been working on.”
Food resources had always been scarce in the Black Wolf Gang, so there were no private kitchens, not even for Su Tang, the Chief’s daughter.
However, those who went out on patrols or faced zombies were allowed an extra portion of meat.
This applied to breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Bai Yanxing handed over her bowl, only to see Su Tang gently shake her head. Her meaning was clear: she wanted to feed her herself.
Bai Yanxing: ……
Though somewhat speechless, she leaned in and opened her mouth to take a bite of the pork chop. The meat was roasted to a crispy perfection, still steaming hot and utterly delicious.
Watching Bai Yanxing being so obedient, Su Tang felt a surge of satisfaction. She suddenly realized that even if the Female Lead appeared, she wouldn’t pose a fatal threat to her anymore.
She loved the feeling of feeding Bai Yanxing.
He always seemed like a well-behaved kitten munching on treats. No wonder humans were so captivated by animals—the act of feeding them truly evoked a subtle mix of tenderness and secret delight.
After finishing their meal, Bai Yanxing took the plates to wash.
“Why are you being so proactive today?” Su Tang asked.
She had wanted to help with the dishes, but Bai Yanxing’s speed was unmatched. Before she could even reach for a plate, she had already finished washing everything.
“You got the food, so of course I’ll do the dishes,” Bai Yanxing replied with a smile.
After tidying up, they prepared to head out. Though learning to ride a horse in snowy weather wasn’t ideal, in the Apocalypse, every skill acquired increased one’s chances of survival.
As soon as Bai Yanxing pushed open the door, she noticed members of the Black Wolf Gang, bundled in thick cotton-padded coats, hurrying toward the Outer City.
“Hey, have you heard?”
“A huge crowd of people from Feather City is heading this way.”
“Ah, could they be planning to attack us?”
Many Black Wolf Gang members were still talking as they walked.
“No way. But Feather City’s been getting tougher lately. I heard a lot of people have escaped.”
“Probably trying to join our Black Wolf Gang.”
Bai Yanxing, with her keen hearing, stood in the wind and snow for a moment, quickly piecing together the situation.
Su Tang, following closely behind, naturally overheard some of the conversation. She couldn’t help but think:
Feather City in the novel is the protagonist’s faction, extensively depicted with many supporting characters.
It’s full of ruthless individuals, many of whom survive well into the late Apocalypse. Some even unlock Divine Power.
Su Tang hadn’t originally intended to get involved. In the Apocalypse, simply taking care of herself was already a major success.
Recruiting talent should be her cheap old man’s concern, but… if she could recruit some Divine Power allies for the Female Lead, it would undoubtedly prove immensely useful later on.
In an instant, Su Tang changed her mind.
She decided to go watch the commotion.
Learning to ride a horse could wait.
