- Chapter 33 - Playing the Fool
The Outer City’s high walls loomed even taller now, reinforced with electric grids, a truly imposing sight. Black Wolf Gang members patrolled the ramparts, black rifles slung across their shoulders, exuding an air of authority.
At this moment, they were on high alert, watching a large crowd gathered at the Outer City gates.
These people were dressed in tattered cotton-padded coats, patched and re-patched until they resembled the ragged clothing of famine victims in old photographs.
How could Su Tang see them?
The gates had already been opened, but to prevent the crowd from rushing in, Black Wolf Gang members were blocking the entrance with wooden barricades and electric grids.
Su Jianyu was naturally present at this scene, clad in a thick leather coat and gripping a black pistol.
“Speak,” she said coldly. “You defected from Feather City. Will they not pursue you?”
His voice was flat, but the ruthless glint in her eyes betrayed her true nature. She was no benevolent figure.
Even Su Tang had to admit she was intimidated by her gaze. After all, this woman had once been a villain, and could never be the kind, compassionate type.
“Alpha, Feather City can no longer afford to support people like us…”
The leader was a woman with graying temples.
Su Tang’s gaze swept over the group. Based on the novel’s descriptions, she could identify those who would later possess Divine Power—the future right-hand women and women of the Female Lead.
There were roughly five people: three women and two men.
Su Tang fell into a brief silence. Was this truly the pull of destiny?
Wherever the Female Lead went, they would follow.
Because Bai Yanxing hadn’t gone to Feather City, these future comrades, whom she would have met there, had all been expelled.
This was a clear deviation from the novel’s established lore.
According to the original setting, Feather City was supposed to be a benevolent force, dedicated to healing the wounded and protecting the weak.
“What kind of bullshit is this?” Su Jianyu snorted, her nostrils flaring as thick white plumes of vapor billowed from them. “Isn’t Feather City’s whole philosophy about caring for the vulnerable? The Feather City Lord even used to curse me daily, calling me a bastard born without a mother!”
The Black Wolf Gang and Feather City had been at odds for years, so Su Jianyu’s anger was understandable.
His parents had indeed died early, and her wife had also perished after their marriage. She had originally intended to find a stepmother to care for her daughter.
But after a fortune teller told her she was destined to be the Star of Solitude and Calamity, making her unsuitable for marriage, she abandoned the idea. She couldn’t bear to cause the death of another family member.
So she simply avoided romantic entanglements.
“This year’s snow is particularly heavy, and Feather City has taken in another group of young people. We’re running out of food…”
“That’s why we came here…”
The old woman knelt, her knees sinking deep into the snow.
“Alpha, if you’ll just give my family a bite to eat, I’ll do anything you ask!”
At that moment, a woman with naturally red hair stepped forward. A mixed-race beauty with striking features and an exceptionally vibrant presence.
Su Tang’s gaze locked onto the red-haired woman before her. She instinctively reached out and hugged Bai Yanxing, a sudden sense of danger washing over her.
If the Female Lead was merely a holy father figurehead,
Gu Mei was the Female Lead’s right-hand woman, a character with immense popularity in the original novel. Readers who disliked the Female Lead often shipped her with the Female Lead, lamenting that the two should have been a couple instead.
Su Tang had already successfully twisted Bai Yanxing into a mosquito coil, but what if someone else snatched that coil away and used it to repel zombies?
Su Tang’s heart ached terribly.
“What’s wrong?” Bai Yanxing asked, turning her head. She wasn’t particularly compassionate, though she felt a twinge of pity for the group of elderly, weak, and disabled people kneeling on the ground.
But she was merely the captain of the Black Wolf Gang’s elite squad, with no authority to decide whether to let so many people stay.
“Nothing,” Su Tang replied, shaking her head with a hint of guilt.
As Su Jianyu’s daughter, she wielded considerable power, her words carrying immense weight. She could easily influence her cheap old woman with a few whispers in her ear.
This meant she faced two clear choices:
- Accept these five future teammates, who would undoubtedly possess Divine Power later in the novel. This would significantly ease the Female Lead’s path to defeating the final boss.
- Reject them. This would ensure Bai Yanxing remained loyal to her, preventing Gu Mei—a character with a hint of romantic tension in the novel—from seducing her away.
Ugh, this is so annoying!
Without a system to guide her, Su Tang had no room for error. Every decision carried irreversible consequences.
Despite their already close relationship, Su Tang remained confident in her decision. After a brief internal struggle, she stepped forward.
The Black Wolf Gang members tensed, each wanting to stop her. But the moment they saw Su Tang’s fierce expression—especially her eyes, which bore a striking resemblance to Su Jianyu’s—they hesitated and retreated.
No one had ever doubted that Su Tang was Su Jianyu’s biological daughter.
“Su Tang, what if they’re hiding guns?” Bai Yanxing reached out to stop her.
Su Tang shook her head. “They wouldn’t dare fire. They still need my father’s help.”
“You want to help them?” Bai Yanxing recalled Su Tang saving her parents and couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “I know you’re kind-hearted…”
“But since you’ve made up your mind, I’ll support you.”
With that, she walked forward with her, approaching Su Jianyu.
“Dad, we still have some empty houses, right? They’re in the Outer City anyway, so they won’t take up much space. You recognize some of these people, don’t you? They’re all quite capable…”
Unlike before, Su Tang didn’t directly demand that Su Jianyu take them in. Instead, she gradually highlighted the benefits.
“Especially Gu Mei. She’s a sharpshooter who can snipe Jumping Zombies from long range. She might even be useful against that Undead Juggernaut we encountered last time.”
Having read the novel, Su Tang knew the skills of the main supporting characters inside and out.
Gu Mei was clearly shocked. While some members of the Black Wolf Gang knew she was a skilled marksman, how could Miss Su, a sheltered young lady who rarely left her estate, possibly know?
“Why are you all staring at me? Do you think I’m useless? I just don’t talk about it much, but I actually know quite a lot, you know.” Su Tang spread her hands, feigning innocent naivety.
This playful demeanor reminded everyone of Su Tang’s former self. Heads bowed, they couldn’t believe Miss Su had been playing the fool all along.
But only Su Tang knew the truth.
She was merely relying on her knowledge of the original novel’s plot, borrowing the tiger’s might to intimidate them.
“Gu Mei is indeed Feather City’s most formidable sharpshooter,” Su Jianyu nodded, not refuting Su Tang’s claim. Instead, she reached out and ruffled her hair, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes deepening as she smiled. This gesture seemed to remind everyone of her advancing age.
“Tangtang, Dad never expected you to be such a keen observer.”
“Alright, since you’ve come to seek refuge with me, I’m willing to accept you. However, you’ll need to undergo a few days of quarantine for observation. I need to investigate whether the Feather City Lord has sent any spies among you.”
Su Jianyu turned away, accepting her daughter’s proposal.
