- Chapter 34 - The Female Supporting Character Arrives
Gu Mei grinned, seemingly surprised at how easily things had gone. After all, the Alpha of the Black Wolf Gang was notoriously cautious and difficult to deal with.
But with the Alpha’s cub speaking on her behalf, things had indeed become much easier.
“Thank you,” Gu Mei said, smiling and bowing deeply. She then helped the kneeling elder to her feet and led the group of old, weak, and disabled into the Black Wolf Gang’s territory.
It was only at this moment that Bai Yanxing sensed something was amiss. She turned her refined gaze toward Su Tang.
“Why have you been staring at her?”
Red-haired women were indeed rare. This wasn’t the era before society’s collapse, when colorful hair dyes were commonplace.
But now, such things were impossible.
No one had the inclination to dye their hair, nor were the services available.
Everyone either had pitch-black hair or, due to chronic malnutrition, dry, tangled locks that resembled straw.
Gu Mei, however, was different. Her vibrant red hair was natural, making her stand out in any crowd.
“Really?” Su Tang asked, a little embarrassed. But this reaction only made Bai Yanxing feel even worse.
Could it be that Su Tang already has a soft spot for that woman?
Gu Mei was undeniably attractive, with a striking appearance and a captivating figure. But Su Tang shouldn’t be…
Bai Yanxing couldn’t shake off the suspicion in her heart.
However, with so many people around, she couldn’t ask directly. She lowered her voice and inquired, “Her red hair is just too beautiful…”
Though Su Tang remained wary of Gu Mei, fearing she might steal the Female Lead who belonged to her, she couldn’t deny that Gu Mei had plenty of shining moments in the novel.
She was the kind of woman who made it difficult to dislike her.
“You like red hair?” Bai Yanxing asked, twirling a strand of her short hair around her finger. She couldn’t imagine herself with red hair. Even if she liked it, her parents would probably be furious.
Both her parents were university professors with strict values. They disapproved of her getting involved in such frivolous things.
Even in the Apocalypse, dyeing her hair a flashy red would be practically begging for someone to shoot her in the head.
“I don’t like it,” Su Tang said.
Sensing a hint of bitterness in her words, Su Tang turned and gently cupped Bai Yanxing’s cheeks, rubbing them softly.
“I like your hair,” she said.
Bai Yanxing often wore a small braid at the back of her head. It felt soft and smooth to the touch, making it irresistible to stroke.
It was like petting a well-behaved, large dog.
Strands of silky hair lingered between her fingers, and Su Tang’s petting grew more enthusiastic. However, she quickly pulled back, mindful of the public setting and the many eyes watching them. She needed to maintain some semblance of propriety.
Even so, their intimate display drew frequent glances from the crowd.
The Black Wolf Gang members slowly closed the main gate, removing the electric nets and wooden spikes that had blocked the way.
Everything returned to calm, as if nothing had ever happened.
Bai Yanxing’s heart fluttered like a startled deer after Su Tang’s teasing. A faint smile curved her lips.
Maybe Su Tang only glanced at Gu Mei’s red hair because it was so eye-catching, she reassured herself.
Su Tang reached out and took Gu Mei’s hand, following her to the Outer City.
The Black Wolf Gang’s Outer City was far from pleasant, a chaotic mix of pigsties, cattle pens, sheepfolds, and other livestock enclosures.
The stench was truly overpowering.
Only a few dilapidated houses stood unoccupied, reserved for temporary residents.
Gu Mei frowned slightly but said nothing. After all…
Even living among livestock was better than being bitten by zombies outside, constantly living in fear.
“Thank you for speaking up for me, Miss Su,” Gu Mei said, handing her sniper rifle—which she had been carrying on her back—to the Black Wolf Gang member collecting weapons. Though she cherished this old companion, she had little ammunition left, and carrying it now served only as a deterrent.
“Don’t mention it. Now that you’ve joined the Black Wolf Gang, you’re one of us.”
“We have a mission the day after tomorrow. You can go with Yanxing.”
Su Tang’s sole motivation had always been Bai Yanxing, so she made sure to credit her in her words.
“This is your chance to prove yourself.”
With that, Su Tang finished speaking.
Gu Mei nodded earnestly, seemingly agreeing with Su Tang’s words.
“Alright, but remember to allocate extra ammunition for me. If we run out, I can use a bow and arrows too.”
In the Apocalypse, possessing a Weapon of Truth was undoubtedly thrilling, but the scarcity of ammunition was a constant concern. Once a magazine of bullets was spent, it was gone.
Therefore, those who wielded firearms either had incredible luck finding them or possessed exceptional marksmanship skills.
Most people relied on bows and arrows.
Gu Mei had naturally learned archery. If she got lucky and found a crossbow, that would be even better.
“I will,” Su Tang nodded. She then instructed the Black Wolf Gang members to bring supplies to the newcomers. Watching them wrap themselves in blankets and bask in the warmth of the portable heaters, Su Tang finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Today, however, Su Tang noticed that Bai Yanxing seemed unusually gloomy.
The Black Wolf Gang’s elite teams, responsible for fighting zombies and scavenging supplies, received a daily ration of one cup of alcohol.
The lowest-grade liquor was baogushao, distilled from homegrown corn. Even this inferior brew was limited to a single cup per day.
But Bai Yanxing, as a team leader, had the privilege of choosing different types of alcohol.
Though still limited to one cup daily, the city’s alcohol reserves remained surprisingly abundant, given that the Apocalypse had only struck four years prior.
The Black Wolf Gang collected these premium liquors to reward their combat personnel.
Bai Yanxing used to abstain from drinking.
He often exchanged her daily ration for candy or chocolate, amassing a small box of sweets. She planned to give it to Su Tang on her birthday.
But today…
Bai Yanxing’s resolve wavered slightly. She stared at the ice cubes in her glass, unable to comprehend why, even in the apocalypse, even with life hanging by a thread, people still craved cigarettes, alcohol, and sweets.
Yet, in this moment, she began to understand.
Humans are emotional creatures.
They need something to soothe the wounds of the heart.
Bai Yanxing didn’t know if Su Tang was particularly drawn to strength, but she had seen women and women who would fawn over others simply because they were more powerful, even becoming infatuated with them.
But…
I might not be inferior to Gu Mei!
Although she had never practiced with a sniper rifle, Bai Yanxing refused to believe it was something impossible to learn.
She raised her glass and took a small sip. The strong liquor burned her throat, the heat rushing to her brain in a dizzying haze.
