- Chapter 37 - I'll Never Let You Suffer Again
“You’re up so early?”
Su Tang, still drowsy, instantly snapped awake.
A faint blush tinted her cheeks, like a summer peach ripening on the branch. The uneven redness made her face resemble a peach that was soft and ripe on one side, yet crisp and just barely ripe on the other.
“It’s not early,” Bai Yanxing replied. “The kids are already outside having a snowball fight.”
These children, born around the time of the apocalypse, had known no fixed home. But now, they were able to reclaim a sliver of their childhood innocence, which was a blessing in itself.
“Let’s go. We have a mission today.”
Su Tang recalled Bai Yanxing’s drunken state the previous night. She seemed like a completely different person today. A docile, tipsy puppy was indeed worlds apart from a vigilant wolfhound.
She reached out and gently cupped her cheek.
“You’re not holding yesterday against me?”
Su Tang pressed their foreheads together, her voice brimming with affection.
Bai Yanxing’s mind froze for a moment. She had only drunk one glass of wine the night before, and her memory of the aftermath was hazy. Still, she remembered stumbling into the bathroom and clumsily undressing.
“What’s there to worry about? It was just my own wild speculation. I shouldn’t have dragged you into it.”
Bai Yanxing had already thrown back the covers and stood up.
With her head bowed, she held a black hair tie between her teeth as she tied her hair back. Most women these days kept their hair short for convenience—easier to wash and less likely to be grabbed by Lurker Zombies.
Hearing Bai Yanxing’s words, Su Tang’s heart skipped a beat. She really is the Female Lead, she thought, impressed by her thoughtfulness.
“If I made you unhappy, then I was wrong.”
Su Tang rose to her feet and wrapped her arms around Bai Yanxing from behind, pressing soft, warm kisses against her ear, neck, and the nape of her neck.
“I’m sorry… But from now on, I’ll keep my distance from other women.”
“A distance that makes you uncomfortable.”
Bai Yanxing’s skin trembled at the warm touch. She felt a mix of embarrassment and an overwhelming longing for the embrace.
In the end, she simply closed her eyes, suppressing the honey-sweet joy that welled up in her heart.
“Okay.”
“I believe you,” Bai Yanxing said, her voice brimming with barely suppressed joy. She turned around, no longer able to restrain herself.
Su Tang, momentarily losing her balance, leaned backward until her back pressed against the table. The carpenter-crafted furniture was meticulously planed, leaving no splinters; its surface felt smooth and slick to the touch.
Bai Yanxing leaned closer, the snow-white landscape outside the window blurring into a hazy backdrop.
Su Tang, still drowsy from her nap, looked slightly dazed. Bai Yanxing gently stroked the corner of her lips with her thumb.
“Tangtang, how could I not believe you when I love you so much?”
Bai Yanxing recalled the models she had seen in old posters. Though time had faded the advertisements, their lips remained vividly colored.
It was the color of lipstick, a shade now nearly impossible to find—and even if found, likely long decayed.
But even without lipstick…
Su Tang’s rosy lips were more than a match for those models.
Irresistibly tempting.
Bai Yanxing leaned down, recklessly claiming the emotional solace she had denied herself the day before.
His lips brushed lightly against hers.
Gu Mei stood in the freezing snow for a while. Today, she had received over twenty sniper rifle rounds and a rifle, filling her with elation.
But the Black Wolf Gang had also issued an order:
She was allowed to miss only three or four shots. Failure to comply would result in a reduction of her future ammunition allocation.
The Black Wolf Gang operated this way: every round of ammunition had to be used purposefully, not squandered recklessly.
Of course, Su Tang was the exception.
“Why hasn’t the Captain arrived yet? Is she always this slow?”
The other Black Wolf Gang members yawned, stomped their feet, and tried to keep warm.
However, they maintained a clear distance from Gu Mei and her group—the former elite operatives from Feather City.
“I don’t know…”
“He probably overslept. Let me tell you, Su Tang’s house is so warm! It has a fireplace that’s always burning with huge logs!”
Su Tang’s house was exquisitely beautiful, practically a standalone villa within the Black Wolf Gang’s Inner City. It stood in stark contrast to the makeshift shacks most members lived in—haphazardly cobbled together from scrap metal, resembling a refugee camp.
How could such a magnificent house not inspire envy?
Even before the apocalypse, most people would toil their entire lives for a home like that.
Amidst the murmur of conversation, a few coughs cut through the air, clearly intended to silence the idle chatter. The group turned to see Bai Yanxing and Su Tang approaching through the wind and snow.
Bai Yanxing looked as usual, her bowstring slung across her back, protective gear on her hands, and a holster at her waist. Su Tang carried a compound bow, its red and white colors striking against the snowy landscape. Their footsteps left a trail in the soft snow, quickly covered by the swirling flakes.
“Is everyone here?” Bai Yanxing asked slowly, pulling out her notebook to take roll call. Once she confirmed everyone was present, she tucked the notebook back into her backpack.
“Gu Mei, your group of six will be under extra scrutiny today. I hope you understand.”
The Black Wolf Gang didn’t trust outsiders easily, and this was a necessary test. However, Bai Yanxing never treated her fellow countrymen with unwarranted hostility, so she explained her reasons.
“I understand,” Gu Mei replied, wiping bloodstains from the butt of her sniper rifle. Clearly, she had used the weapon in close combat as well.
Bai Yanxing led the group to the pickup trucks. Their mission this time was more demanding: collecting medical supplies from the hospital.
As the number of people increased, so did the outbreaks of disease.
The hospital, however…
As the epicenter of the epidemic, one could only imagine the sheer number of monsters lurking within.
Su Jianyu joined the assault, breaching the hospital from the rear, while Bai Yanxing led the team entering through the parking garage.
Anticipating zombies similar to those encountered at the Hydroelectric Dam, Su Jianyu remained exceptionally vigilant, bringing a substantial supply of homemade explosives.
Numerous zombies roamed outside the hospital. Bai Yanxing took a deep breath, nocked an arrow, and released it. The arrow pierced the air, striking three or four ordinary zombies in quick succession.
Remembering she needed to prove herself, Gu Mei raised her rifle. The vehicle lurched violently over the rough terrain, making it nearly impossible to aim accurately.
But in the Apocalypse, she had honed her instincts. As the muzzle aligned, Gu Mei targeted a zombie leaping through the air.
The creature was massive, its body coiled with crimson vortex patterns like a colossal, sky-darkening bat.
Yet, with a single rifle shot, the zombie’s skull shattered instantly.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Feather City had made a colossal blunder by letting such a skilled fighter slip through their fingers.
