- Chapter 38 - Jealousy Spreads
As if showing off her skills, Gu Mei deliberately targeted Jumping Zombies with each shot, delivering precise headshots without wasting a single bullet. Her accuracy surpassed even many of the Black Wolf Gang’s elite snipers.
Su Tang stared in awe, her composite bow raised but her arrow remaining unreleased for a long moment.
This is incredible!
No wonder she’s been the Female Lead’s right-hand woman throughout the novel. Her abilities are only slightly weaker than the Female Lead’s own.
Yes!
I finally made the right choice! Su Tang felt a surge of satisfaction.
Though Gu Mei’s presence had stirred a hint of jealousy between them, the sweetness of reconciliation felt all the more precious after the initial sourness.
Isn’t this a kind of good fortune?
The pickup truck finally broke through the zombie horde and reached the hospital parking lot. Much of the hospital grounds had been fortified with iron netting during the initial outbreak, but the barriers had fallen into disrepair after the hospital was overrun.
Now, these nets had been hastily repaired to hold back the slowly gathering zombie swarm, drawn by the Black Wolf Gang’s commotion.
The Black Wolf Gang had mobilized a substantial force to secure medical supplies. They couldn’t linger in the city center; prolonged exposure would attract hordes of zombies, necessitating nearly half their members to participate in the operation.
“Everyone, put on your gas masks! Prepare to enter the parking garage!” Bai Yanxing shouted, donning her own mask. Most of these masks had been scavenged from corpses.
When news spread that the Red Mist intensified the infection, gas masks became a coveted commodity, selling for hundreds of thousands of yuan apiece. This wasn’t an exaggeration.
Though the masks were worn and weathered, their condition mattered little as long as they could block the Red Mist’s corrosive effects.
The group formed small squads, with Bai Yanxing leading the way. The underground parking garage was pitch-dark and eerily silent. Su Tang patted the flashlight hanging from her chest.
The faint beam struggled to penetrate the dense Red Mist. The sheer concentration of the mist hinted at the countless corpses piled within.
Everywhere they looked, bodies in hospital gowns lay stacked upon one another, some already decayed to skeletal remains.
Some of the structures resembled ovaries, as if incubating something.
Bai Yanxing retrieved gasoline, intending to burn everything. If another massive zombie were to hatch from these things, it would be beyond their ability to handle.
The parking lot was filled with abandoned vehicles. Though much of the gasoline had evaporated, enough remained to be siphoned out—perfect for destroying these ovarian structures.
Su Tang knew exactly what these structures were for: incubating those grotesque, mutated zombies. Bai Yanxing’s decision was correct.
Let fire cleanse everything.
However…
Even if the Black Wolf Gang managed to reduce the zombie population within their territory, people elsewhere wouldn’t have the same awareness.
Eventually, hordes of zombies would still form, and if they wanted to reinforce the city walls, steel and iron would be the best materials.
But for now, no one had the energy for such projects. Survival remained the best strategy.
Bai Yanxing led the way down. The elevators were broken, so they had to use the emergency staircase.
The group lined up and slowly entered. The warehouse door was tightly locked, but opening it proved simple enough: they just smashed the lock with an axe.
The axe violently split the iron lock, but the noise was deafening. The metal door clanged loudly, attracting a horde of zombies that surged from the far end of the hospital corridor.
Su Tang’s eyes widened in terror. This scene was a hundred times more terrifying than any zombie movie, because it was utterly real.
What made it even worse was the indescribable stench emanating from the zombies. Fortunately, her gas mask shielded her from the stench.
The Black Wolf Gang members raised their bows and arrows, while those with guns opened fire without hesitation.
Even Bai Yanxing managed to shoot down one or two rapidly approaching zombies.
But the sheer number of zombies overwhelmed them. Soon, several slower members were grabbed by the legs and their backs snapped.
The screams of their comrades echoed through the corridor.
Yet Bai Yanxing remained calm. She moved closer, drew her pistol, and fired several shots, blasting zombie heads and rescuing several subordinates who had been entangled by the creatures.
But worse was yet to come. Surging from behind the horde of ordinary zombies was a swarm of Jumping Zombies.
If Su Jianyu had known the parking lot was swarming with so many zombies, she would never have allowed her daughter to put herself in such danger.
Clearly, she hadn’t known.
Bai Yanxing felt a pang of helplessness. She continued aiming, knowing she could only take them down with single shots at close range.
He narrowly dodged several Jumping Zombies lunging at him.
But someone moved even faster. With a series of sharp gunshots, Gu Mei blasted the Jumping Zombies circling Su Tang.
Gu Mei’s movements were fluid and practiced as she raised her rifle and worked the bolt. With each crisp report, another Jumping Zombie fell dead from her barrel.
“Thank you…”
Su Tang snapped out of her daze and murmured her gratitude to the woman before her. She hadn’t imagined her decision to come here would save her life.
“No need to thank me.”
Before Gu Mei could say more, a figure rushed over.
“Su Tang, are you alright?”
Bai Yanxing’s eyes were filled with concern. She immediately sensed the awkward tension between the three of them. Gu Mei smirked, her red lips curving upward.
“Squad Leader, I just saved your girlfriend from a real mess.”
Gu Mei raised her bolt-action rifle, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Though she carried a sniper rifle, the cramped space offered no room to set it up.
The rifle issued by the Black Wolf Gang proved surprisingly effective.
Bai Yanxing pursed her lips, a hint of displeasure flickering across her face. But in this critical situation, indulging in personal emotions was out of the question.
After finally clearing the surging horde of zombies, Bai Yanxing let out a sigh of relief and ordered her women to drag the corpses outside for incineration.
He then opened the warehouse door. Inside were stockpiles of medical supplies originally prepared by the hospital, including masks and other essentials. Most of the medicines had expired, leaving little that was still usable.
But something was better than nothing.
Every usable item had to be salvaged.
Bai Yanxing instructed her women to load the usable medical supplies, such as sutures, onto carts before finally relaxing.
He decided to step outside for some fresh air and chat with Su Tang.
Sniping and rifles?
I can do that too!
Bai Yanxing couldn’t shake the feeling that Su Tang’s gaze toward Gu Mei earlier had been overflowing with admiration, making her deeply uncomfortable.
While Gu Mei was undeniably strong, that didn’t mean she was lacking!
Su Tang, equally unwilling to linger in the hospital corridors, joined Bai Yanxing in dragging the zombie corpses to the garage for incineration.
“Su Tang…”
Only after finishing the task did they remove their gas masks and breathe in the fresh air outside the hospital perimeter.
“Do you think Gu Mei is really amazing?”
Su Tang: ……
What’s with the Female Lead’s possessiveness? It’s practically overflowing!
