- Chapter 40 - Elbowing the Female Lead
As Su Tang had predicted, Su Jianyu, after bringing back a large supply of medical resources, immediately planned a victory celebration.
After all, people couldn’t endure constant high-pressure environments, especially after witnessing the deaths of comrades and enduring countless zombie attacks. They needed to relax and unwind.
The Inner City was absolutely safe, and with the newly installed electric grid, they could cheer and celebrate freely, as long as the noise didn’t become excessively loud and carry to the Outer City.
A bonfire blazed, its orange-red flames casting a warm glow as sparks danced and crackled.
Someone strummed a guitar, while others played records, creating an atmosphere of peaceful merriment. A whole suckling pig roasted on a spit, its skin turning golden-brown as oil sizzled and dripped. The chef brushed it with savory sauces, the aroma alone enough to make passersby drool.
Bai Yanxing sat on a chair, a cup of hot wine beside him. The wine was brownish, with something steeped inside—probably scorpions or centipedes, though Bai Yanxing couldn’t be sure.
His gaze drifted through the crowd until she found Su Tang. She looked particularly lovely today, wearing a pink sweater embroidered with small white flowers.
Yet Bai Yanxing found her far more beautiful than the flowers on her chest, her gaze unconsciously following the movements of the woman she adored.
“Are you happy?” Su Tang asked as she approached. At that moment, the roasted suckling pig was ready. The chef responsible for roasting it lifted the porcelain platter and began carving the meat.
Eating roasted suckling pig alone can be quite greasy, so it’s usually paired with beer or tea to cut through the richness.
Su Jianyu took a sip of the Black Wolf Gang’s homemade liquor, a harsh, throat-burning flavor filling her mouth. But her eyes remained fixed on Su Tang.
A daughter grows up and leaves her father.
He had known this day would come.
Su Tang’s affection for Bai Yanxing had long surpassed her feelings for Chen Bin, a fact Su Jianyu was painfully aware of. The young man’s eagerness was undeniable—he hadn’t even come to find her father at the victory banquet, instead rushing straight to that woman.
While Bai Yanxing was undoubtedly exceptional, Su Jianyu couldn’t help but feel a pang of bitterness. Surely she hasn’t forgotten her old woman so quickly?
Unfortunately, Su Tang remained oblivious to her father’s inner turmoil, still happily trying to cheer up the Female Lead. She took a portion of the roasted suckling pig from the chef who was distributing the meat.
“Let’s just have a little today, not too much. We have things to do later.”
Joy sparkled in Su Tang’s eyes. She had taken extra care to bathe and perfume herself before coming, and now her skin radiated the fresh scent of shower gel.
In the Apocalypse, people’s desires for romance and intimacy had dwindled drastically. An accidental slip-up could lead to an unwanted pregnancy—a cruel irony for those struggling to feed themselves, let alone a child.
After speaking, Su Tang used her fork to spear a small piece of succulent, marbled roast suckling pig and fed it to Bai Yanxing. Watching her cheeks puff out slightly as she chewed, like a chipmunk munching on a nut, Su Tang found her utterly adorable.
Bai Yanxing wasn’t particularly interested in the food. She simply looked up at Su Tang. “What’s the gift?” she asked, her tone more curious than impatient.
“You’ll find out later,” Su Tang replied. “For now, just enjoy the feast.”
After charging through hordes of zombies, everyone needed a chance to cleanse their spirits. Around the bonfire, couples danced gracefully, their love blossoming amidst the lively chatter. Bai Yanxing quietly reached out and placed her hand on the back of Su Tang’s hand.
The two drank wine and ate meat, a rare luxury in the Apocalypse.
In the distance, occasional gunshots rang out as patrolling soldiers sniped Jumping Zombies attempting to scale the high walls.
Bai Yanxing gradually grew tipsy.
She had become somewhat addicted to drinking lately. The lightheaded, slightly drunk feeling helped her forget many troubles.
At that moment, she finally understood why, in the Apocalypse, alcohol and tobacco were priceless commodities despite being inedible.
Seeing the moment was right, Su Tang helped Bai Yanxing back to her room. Bai Yanxing, however, insisted on proving she wasn’t drunk.
“I don’t need your help. I can walk on my own.”
She took a couple of steps forward, but her body swayed wildly, and she faceplanted into a snowdrift.
Her black hair became speckled with snow, making the scene almost comical.
“Who said you didn’t need help?” Su Tang, who had barely touched her wine, was far less drunk than Bai Yanxing.
Bai Yanxing propped herself up in the snow, looking up with eyes that resembled those of an innocent, large dog.
“Okay, fine. I can’t walk straight anymore…”
Bai Yanxing finally lowered her head.
Just then, someone ran over, her brow furrowed with worry in her eyes.
“Captain, are you alright?”
The man’s voice was soothing, like a gentle spring breeze in February, capable of calming even the most agitated heart.
But Su Tang’s face immediately fell. She recognized that voice all too well—who else could it be but that sly fox, the Female Lead?
“I’m fine…”
“Let me help you up. You fell right into the snow! How can you say you’re fine? Miss Su should have been more careful to support you.”
Su Tang: ……
Tea! This is some serious tea! A female green tea—this is a first for me!
Bai Yanxing had been tipsy, but when she heard Lin Shen’s complaint about Su Tang, a flicker of displeasure flashed in her eyes.
“She was supporting me earlier. I insisted on walking alone and stumbled.”
“In the future, please don’t make assumptions without knowing the situation.”
“Su Tang is a good person.”
Bai Yanxing spoke quickly, her words slightly slurred. If not for her slurred speech, one wouldn’t have known she was drunk.
Lin Shen froze, her face flushed with embarrassment. She clearly hadn’t expected the Captain to defend Su Tang so fiercely. But the flicker of disdain in her eyes vanished as quickly as it appeared, and she soon regained her composure.
“You’re right,” Lin Shen said.
“I won’t comment on things I don’t understand in the future.”
Lin Shen reached out to grasp Bai Yanxing’s wrist, but someone moved faster, elbowing her aside.
Stumbling, Lin Shen fell into the snow. Dazed, she clutched her head, ready to curse.
“Who’s there? Can’t you watch where you’re going—”
Before she could finish, she saw a face that was both innocent and slightly mischievous. Su Tang smiled, but her expression was far from friendly.
“Sorry, it’s so dark I didn’t see you. Why wear all black? I almost thought a crow had taken to the streets.”
At this close range, even someone with severe myopia could see clearly. Su Tang had clearly done this on purpose.
She had elbowed the Female Lead aside, preventing her from getting close to Bai Yanxing.
Su Tang reached out and pulled Bai Yanxing, who had drunkenly fallen into the snow, to her feet. She supported her by the waist with one hand while brushing snow off her hat with the other.
“Will you try to act tough again next time?” Su Tang asked, her tone teasingly reproachful.
