- Chapter 42 - Secretly Hiding My Love for You
Bai Yanxing’s breathing quickened. She hadn’t expected the gift she’d longed for to materialize so suddenly. She reached out and gently embraced Su Tang.
Her fingertips traced the silky fabric, gliding down Su Tang’s spine. The material was slightly sheer, allowing her to feel the warmth of Su Tang’s skin beneath.
Su Tang stroked Bai Yanxing’s hair. Bai Yanxing had dried it thoroughly after her shower; her short hair dried quickly. Yet the damp strands clinging to her cheeks and neck made her look undeniably adorable.
“I love it. I love it so much,” Bai Yanxing replied, her voice brimming with barely suppressed excitement.
“The books should have taught you what to do, right?” Su Tang asked, recalling the effort she’d put into collecting books and DVDs for Bai Yanxing—all to preserve knowledge lost during the Apocalypse.
“I know,” Bai Yanxing confirmed.
“Only this way, Yanxing, will you stop worrying that I might like someone else, right?” Su Tang pressed.
“No, I just hate seeing you close to anyone else.”
“Deep down, I know you’re just friends… but it still hurts to see you together.”
She knew her feelings were somewhat twisted.
It seemed she couldn’t bear to see the person she liked smiling sweetly with anyone else, even if there was no romantic intent. The intensity of their friendship was simply too much for her to tolerate.
“Silly girl,” Su Tang murmured, her voice carrying no resentment, only gentle reproach.
With that, she tilted her head back expectantly.
But before her lips could touch Bai Yanxing’s, the other woman seized the initiative, pressing her lips down first.
Invasion… Suffocation.
Either sensation was enough to make one lose themselves.
Soft lips, warm and inviting, only fueled a greedy desire for more.
Su Tang closed her eyes, her mind racing. Perhaps I’ve already fallen too far, she thought. Why else would I be so impatient?
Her fingertips traced down Bai Yanxing’s cheek, coming to rest on her collarbone. Bai Yanxing, who had never experienced such intimacy before, felt her heart pounding wildly.
Yet the dim, seductive light urged her onward.
The morning brought a slight reprieve from the wind and snow.
The harshest part of winter had passed, and even the snow was beginning to melt.
When Bai Yanxing woke up, she found Su Tang still beside him, the bed warm and soft.
Looking down, she saw her long hair was slightly disheveled, but it only enhanced her striking beauty.
Today was a busy day. Bai Yanxing planned to attend the funeral of the fallen team members. The battle in the hospital corridor had been terrifyingly close.
He hadn’t anticipated so many Jumping Zombies.
Throwing grenades in the narrow corridor risked harming their own teammates, forcing everyone to fight cautiously.
Bai Yanxing had lost nearly three or four team members, which was actually relatively few compared to some groups who had lost over a dozen.
Fortunately, the hospital in the city had been completely evacuated, and the supplies they brought back filled over ten trucks. Each truckload of medical supplies represented a human life.
But…
Only these medicines and medical supplies could save more people.
Because human civilization had been nearly destroyed, medicine was the most difficult field to rebuild.
Electricity could be generated using hydroelectric dams.
But medicine couldn’t.
This was precisely why Su Jianyu had been collecting supplies from hospitals. She also planned to search for research labs, hoping to acquire the basic equipment needed to extract penicillin.
Penicillin was practically a miracle drug, capable of eradicating many viral infections.
While the plan was sound in theory, every step would require paving with the bl00d of Black Wolf Gang members.
Bai Yanxing gazed at the soundly sleeping figure and sighed softly. She didn’t want to disturb Su Tang; she had clearly overexerted herself yesterday and must be exhausted.
So, Bai Yanxing reached for the stuffed giraffe lying beside the bed. The plush fabric indicated it was an expensive toy.
In the Apocalypse, its greatest value would likely be as kindling, providing heat for perhaps three or four minutes.
But its owner was Su Tang.
Thus, she managed to maintain her clean, neat, fragrant, and soft appearance.
Bai Yanxing reached down and gently removed Su Tang’s arm from around her waist, then carefully placed the giraffe plushie into her arms.
He moved with utmost caution, afraid of waking her beloved beside him.
Bai Yanxing stood up and went to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, she examined her reflection.
Aside from some dark circles under her eyes, nothing seemed amiss. However, her lips were slightly swollen and scabbed, and faint red marks and bruises dotted her jawline and neck.
This truly is…
Truly a little cat who loves to bite.
Bai Yanxing smiled, her heart brimming with joy.
After washing her face with warm water from the kettle on the fireplace, she added a large log to keep the room warm.
Then she left.
After attending the funeral, she planned to practice shooting.
Even on days without zombies to fight, Bai Yanxing kept her schedule packed.
The memory of Gu Mei’s reckless display of skill yesterday still lingered in Bai Yanxing’s mind, leaving her vaguely irritated. She resolved to dedicate today to honing her shooting skills.
Although sniper and rifle ammunition was precious, Bai Yanxing trusted herself not to waste a single round. Moreover, the bullet casings at the shooting range would be collected and reloaded by specialized personnel.
Bai Yanxing changed into her light brown jacket, which stood out sharply against the snow-covered landscape. Just then, a group of children in padded coats ran past him, their laughter echoing as they gathered in the open space outside Su Tang’s room.
No wonder this place attracts kids for snowball fights, she thought. It’s the only large open area around.
“Hey!” Bai Yanxing stopped in her tracks.
“You can go to the park next door. Stop playing here—you’re making too much noise and disturbing people’s sleep,” she said, her tone cold and dismissive.
Bai Yanxing rarely initiated conversations, but she spoke up today primarily because Su Tang was sleeping. She didn’t want her to be woken up by children throwing snowballs at her window, as had happened before.
“The snow’s not as thick in the park!” the children retorted, crossing their arms in defiance.
“Really?”
Bai Yanxing had no patience for a bunch of brats.
“If you don’t leave, I’ll personally kick you out.”
She took a step closer.
An adult nearby hurried over. The woman, who was using a crutch, had clearly lost her leg escaping a zombie bite.
“I’m sorry, my children don’t know any better.”
Bai Yanxing shook her head slightly.
“They can come play in the afternoon, but not in the morning. Miss Su is still sleeping.”
The woman’s expression turned even more terrified. How could she not know who Miss Su was? Everyone in the Base referred to Su Tang as Miss Su.
Because she was the Alpha’s daughter.
“Thank you for the reminder…”
The woman seemed unfamiliar with the Inner City, likely having moved in recently.
“No need to thank me. I just don’t want them waking up my girlfriend.”
Bai Yanxing froze, realizing what she’d just said. She pressed a finger to her lips, incredulous.
You idiot, can’t you keep anything to yourself? she cursed inwardly.
