- Chapter 43 - She Can Only Worship Me
The cemetery was located in the Outer City, as land in the Inner City was too precious to be used for the dead. The cemetery was a quiet place, planted with simple wildflowers and a few cypress trees.
A small funeral was underway. Members of the Black Wolf Gang were dressed in black, white ribbons tied around their arms.
A simple urn was buried, and a crude stone tombstone was erected.
“Captain…”
The gang members seemed surprised to see Bai Yanxing attend. After all, she had only recently taken over the small team, and their bond wasn’t particularly deep.
“Their accident happened because I failed to lead the team properly.”
Bai Yanxing lowered her lashes and pulled out a money pouch she had prepared earlier. The metal coins clinked softly as they collided.
“This is my personal contribution. Divide it among yourselves.”
Bai Yanxing gazed at the families of the fallen team members. This was all she could do. The families of Black Wolf Gang members who died in battle were entitled to free food and a meager monthly stipend.
This was why people were willing to risk their lives for Su Jianyu.
If the Black Wolf Gang fell, their families would have nowhere to go.
“Captain, it’s not your fault. What happened at the hospital was our own…”
Bai Yanxing and Gu Mei had already performed exceptionally, having shot down the most Jumping Zombies. The others rushed to explain.
Yet Bai Yanxing shook her head.
She handed her coin pouch to a team member she knew well.
“You distribute it.”
Having done all she could, she left the cemetery, a place filled with sorrowful wails.
What made humans human, rather than mere creatures like Zombies driven solely by the hunt for food, was their capacity for joy and sorrow, for the fundamental emotions that bound them together.
After leaving the cemetery, Bai Yanxing headed to the next item on her agenda: the shooting range. The crowd was smaller than usual today, likely because many had overindulged at the victory celebration the previous night.
For Bai Yanxing, this meant a more relaxed session.
He registered her name.
“Ah, Captain Bai,” the registrar said lazily, a cigarette dangling from her lips. “Same as always, then? Handgun and archery practice?” She seemed accustomed to these leisurely days at the Base, even during work hours.
“No,” Bai Yanxing replied. “I recall the Base allows weekly opportunities to try out new weapons. Crossbows… sniper rifles… anything else available.”
Bai Yanxing narrowed her eyes, her competitive spirit blazing. She wanted Su Tang’s undivided attention, unwilling to let her glance at Gu Mei.
“I want to practice with a sniper rifle,” Bai Yanxing said, her tone firm and leaving no room for argument.
“Ah…” The registration clerk looked a little surprised but didn’t press the matter. Under the weight of Bai Yanxing’s imposing presence, she shakily wrote down Bai Yanxing’s name and registered her for sniper rifle practice.
“You have ten bullets,” she explained.
That was enough. Bai Yanxing wasn’t greedy.
He picked up the rifle, walked to the shooting range, put on ear protection, and followed the instructor’s guidance. Slowly, she lay prone, shouldering the rifle.
At first, her shots missed the straw target, hitting its abdomen. But after a few inaccurate rounds, every subsequent bullet struck the target squarely in the head.
The instructor marveled at Bai Yanxing’s natural talent.
But perhaps only Su Tang knew the true reason for her extraordinary aptitude.
As the Female Lead of this world, she was, in essence, the center of its very existence.
When Su Tang woke again, the day was already bright, and the matches in the fireplace had burned down to embers.
She felt a chill.
Usually, the sounds of children playing in the snow would have woken her up by now. Why was it so quiet today?
Su Tang frowned in confusion.
She slowly sat up, gazing at the lingering marks on her body. She couldn’t help but cover her mouth and giggle. So this is what it feels like… to do these things with someone you love.
Her tongue traced her lips.
The lingering taste of their intimacy was utterly intoxicating.
Su Tang leisurely washed up, pleased with the mottled marks on her collarbone. In fact, she hoped the Female Lead would be even more possessive—the stronger her possessiveness, the more it would highlight Bai Yanxing’s devotion to her.
Just as she was about to head out to ask where Bai Yanxing had gone, Su Tang remembered that several of her teammates had died in the jaws of zombies yesterday. She was likely attending their funerals today.
As she finished dressing and reached the door, she noticed a note pinned to the wooden door:
Tangtang, I know you like to find me when you wake up, so I’ve written down my schedule for today.
Su Tang: ……
What a thoughtful Female Lead.
She’d even pinned it to the door, just in case I missed it.
It was true. Su Tang had woken up several times to find Bai Yanxing gone, and she had to ask passersby for directions.
This led everyone to believe she was extremely strict with Bai Yanxing, a demanding girlfriend who wouldn’t let her glance at other women or women.
Su Tang glanced at the clock on the wall.
Damn it! The Female Lead has probably already finished the funeral. I’ll have to go straight to the shooting range.
Seriously, how could I sleep so late?!
She hurriedly pulled on her sweater and rushed to the shooting range where Bai Yanxing was. The Inner City was peaceful in the early morning, with people sweeping snow from the streets and exchanging greetings.
They seemed to have forgotten the existence of zombies. If not for the occasional gunshots echoing from the high walls, serving as a constant reminder, this place might have been mistaken for a tranquil paradise.
When Su Tang arrived, the shooting range was already bustling with activity. The woman in charge of registration had a stubbly beard and a pipe in her mouth, puffing out clouds of smoke.
But when she saw Su Tang, she awkwardly stubbed out her pipe.
He wouldn’t dare smoke in front of the Boss’s daughter.
“Which room is Yanxing in?” Su Tang asked.
The shooting range was divided into separate, independent booths. Calling them “rooms” was a bit of an exaggeration; they were simply partitions made of sheet metal.
“In… in the sniper training area,” the woman stammered, clearly puzzled by Su Tang’s sudden appearance.
Having learned Bai Yanxing’s location, Su Tang moved with the grace of a light bird, gliding slowly toward the sniper training area. The range was bustling with trainees, each focused intently on their practice. Opportunities for training were rare, and every extra bit of experience increased their chances of survival against the Zombies.
Finally, Su Tang found Bai Yanxing in a solitary booth.
Bai Yanxing lay prone on a burlap sack filled with earth, worn earmuffs covering her ears. Her sniper rifle was trained on a distant scarecrow.
Su Tang squinted, noticing only a red object perched atop the scarecrow’s head.
Is that a Coca-Cola bottle? she wondered.
As the thought formed, the bottle shattered, sent flying by a bullet.
Bai Yanxing had completed her training for the day, having fired all ten rounds. With another month or two of practice, she was confident she could surpass Gu Mei.
She was determined to earn Su Tang’s admiration and envy, to have those admiring eyes fixed on her alone, not on anyone else.
