- Chapter 44 - The Headstrong Young Miss
Bai Yanxing removed her goggles, satisfied with the sniper rifle in her hands. Just as she was about to return it, she noticed someone standing in the doorway.
The figure leaned against the wooden frame, the lingering awe in their eyes still evident.
“Yanxing, you were amazing,” Su Tang couldn’t help but exclaim. Though she had read the novel and knew how formidable the Female Lead was—a force of nature who could single-handedly annihilate the entire Black Wolf Gang’s camp—witnessing it firsthand still left her breathless. Bai Yanxing mastered skills with astonishing speed; what might take others five or six years to achieve, she accomplished in mere months.
In the early chapters of the novel, everyone assumed the Female Lead’s extraordinary talent was simply innate. After all, what kind of “Great Female Lead” would she be if her talent stats weren’t maxed out?
But the truth was far more complex. The Female Lead wasn’t just naturally gifted; she was also influenced by Divine Power.
Su Tang later learned that Divine Power, in a sense, accelerated human genetic evolution. It explained why those infected by zombie bites didn’t always turn into zombies.
In the later stages, they would possess Divine Power, achieving true ascension.
This explained why Bai Yanxing was unharmed after being bitten.
However, not everyone was so fortunate. Some Divine Power users had such weak energy that a single bite from a high-level zombie would still lead to assimilation.
Others wouldn’t even last that long, becoming mere after-dinner snacks for the advanced zombies.
Once zombies evolved to a certain level, they could shed their grotesque features and disguise themselves as humans.
Though they had once been human before death or infection, they were no longer human after being infected. Their human disguises were merely a facade, a layer of human skin worn for hunting.
Hunting the Divine Power-wielding Human Race.
Because to zombies, these individuals were like a potent tonic—a massive nutritional boost!
But all that was part of the later plot; she didn’t need to worry about it now.
“What are you doing here?”
Bai Yanxing removed her goggles, looking slightly embarrassed. She had tied her shoulder-length hair into a small ponytail, which swayed gently with her shy movements.
Where was the fierce sniper from moments ago?
“When I woke up and saw you were gone, I’d planned to go to the funeral with you, but I overslept.”
“I didn’t want to disturb your sleep, so I didn’t wake you. Attending the funeral would only make your heart ache more.”
Bai Yanxing only stayed at the funeral for a short while. Hearing the families of the fallen team members weeping was too much for her to bear. She could truly empathize; imagining herself in their place, she knew she would feel the same anguish if it were her own family.
“I know you were thinking of me.”
“How did the sniper training go?” Su Tang asked as she approached.
She genuinely wanted the Female Lead to become stronger. The more formidable the Female Lead became, the more deliciously she could enjoy her “soft rice bowl” lifestyle.
“Not bad.”
“Too bad there were only ten bullets.”
Su Tang narrowed her eyes and slowly drew closer, her soft lips brushing against Bai Yanxing’s ear.
“Have you forgotten? You’re my girlfriend. Here, if you need bullets, all you have to do is ask.”
Though it might seem like the Female Lead was relying on her, Su Tang knew growth took time. Without experiencing the crucible of “parents sacrificed to the heavens, magic power boundless,” the Female Lead still needed to develop her own strength.
She would have to grow stronger elsewhere.
“But…”
“No buts. Only when you become stronger can you save me in critical moments, right?”
Su Tang gently rubbed Bai Yanxing’s cheek, and Bai Yanxing nearly relented.
She raised her hand and lightly cupped the back of Su Tang’s hand. Su Tang’s skin was so delicate that Bai Yanxing couldn’t resist touching it a few more times, unconsciously recalling the scene from the previous night.
Fragmented images, accompanied by soft breaths.
Each detail was enough to drive her mad.
“Yes,” Bai Yanxing nodded.
“Then take the sniper rifle. I’ll get you extra bullets.”
Su Tang kept her word. The Female Lead was someone she had meticulously cultivated—what couldn’t she obtain? It was just a few bullets, after all.
Su Tang led Bai Yanxing back to the registration area.
“Hey, I need twenty sniper bullets.”
Su Tang spoke with an air of superiority, unable to soften her tone too much lest she deviate from the original owner’s character—a woman who would throw a tantrum on the ground just to get a doll.
How did Su Tang know about this?
It all stemmed from her accidentally eavesdropping on a conversation.
It turned out that the original owner had snatched her beloved giraffe plush from someone else. At the time, that family had come to seek refuge with the Black Wolf Gang.
The giraffe plush was encased in a thin plastic film, well-protected.
The little girl had wrapped it in plastic to keep it clean, but the original owner, who wasn’t much older herself at the time, spotted it.
She threw a tantrum, demanding it from her father.
Su Jianyu, a woman devoid of any moral compass, quickly agreed to Su Tang’s suggestion.
He ordered her women to seize the giraffe plush. The little girl burst into tears, and when her father tried to retrieve it, Black Wolf Gang thugs broke her leg.
The incident ended tragically: the entire family was ultimately expelled from the Black Wolf Gang.
The novel never mentioned this event, but just because the author didn’t describe it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Clearly, it did.
The original owner’s vicious personality matched her portrayal in the book perfectly.
To put it bluntly, even the “character awakening” trope common in novels wouldn’t apply to her. Her role was too minor, lacking any independent personality or charm.
Su Tang wouldn’t defend the original owner’s past misdeeds. She only needed to exploit this identity to protect herself.
Perhaps the only difference between her and the original owner was that she never actively sought to harm others. She would help those in need whenever possible, but her own safety remained the absolute prerequisite for any act of kindness.
Otherwise, she’d end up like the saintly female lead—starving and freezing herself while giving away food and clothes to others. That was just plain foolish.
“Miss Su, you can barely hold a sniper rifle steady. What do you need bullets for?” The woman shook her head, clearly unwilling to hand them over.
“Stop talking nonsense! If you don’t give them to me, I’ll tell my dad. I’m finally trying to make an effort, and you people are just trying to stop me.” Su Tang scowled, her eyebrows furrowing in displeasure. Her wild streak was on full display.
Like a hissing cat with its fur standing on end, she glared at him. After a moment’s hesitation, the woman stood up and went to the warehouse behind her to retrieve the sniper rifle ammunition.
The Black Wolf Gang’s ammunition primarily came from scavenging corpses and raiding supply depots, as well as trading with people from other bases who came to do business with them.
In addition to brewing their own liquor, the Black Wolf Gang also produced meat, making them a large and prosperous base. Plenty of people were willing to trade bullets for their goods.
Su Tang grinned, satisfied as she took the box of ammunition.
“Let’s go. We’re heading to the city walls.”
“Yanxing, you can practice to your heart’s content there.”
The registration clerk glanced hesitantly at the sniper rifle slung across Bai Yanxing’s back but ultimately said nothing.
Better not anger the Boss’s daughter, she thought. Otherwise, the Boss will give me a beating I won’t soon forget.
