- Chapter 45 - The Benefits of Winning Over Miss Su
A bitter wind howled across the city walls.
Bai Yanxing’s face was flushed crimson from the cold, but the nearly ten-meter drop held no fear for him.
Since the Apocalypse erupted, she had been navigating the city’s shattered ruins, traversing makeshift bridges of planks stretched between rooftops and walking tightropes as casually as breathing.
The view from the high walls was breathtaking.
As she gazed out, she saw the city reduced to rubble, its walls overgrown with vines. The once-gray steel and concrete now bore a hint of green.
It was a pity it was winter. When spring arrived and the plants went wild, the city would be more than just tinged with green—it would be completely engulfed by it.
Trees sprouted unchecked from the cracked pavement, transforming the once-flat urban landscape into a cratered terrain riddled with puddles.
The Black Wolf Gang patrols patrolling the high walls greeted Su Tang with respectful nods.
“Miss Su.”
Su Tang had long grown accustomed to these greetings. While she might have felt a flicker of unease in the past, she now accepted them with composure.
Indeed, people change.
“Do you know where the zombie concentrations are highest?” Su Tang asked one of the guards. The woman led them to a watchtower along the city wall.
“In winter, these zombies become incredibly sluggish, almost like they’re hibernating,” she explained. “And they know to stay in places where they won’t freeze.”
He pointed to a nearby skyscraper, its upper floors collapsed from artillery fire. The interior was swarming with zombies, their forms densely packed and spiraling upward. They were attacking each other. Several were exceptionally large and muscular.
“The Boss said we need to find a way to kill these guys.”
It turned out that Su Jianyu regularly had women monitor zombie clusters approaching the Black Wolf Gang’s territory. If the threat reached a critical level, she would assemble suicide squads to drive them back.
After all, the destructive power of a single zombie attacking the wall was nothing compared to that of a horde.
“We’ve been trying to shoot zombies from high places for the past few days. In a few days, we’re planning a major purge. If we don’t deal with that horde of zombies, they might sneak into the camp one day.”
These zombies were sentient. Even if they breached the high walls and overcame obstacles, they could sense the large concentration of people gathered within the city walls.
After all, no matter how quietly thousands of people in an entire city tried to be, the collective subtle noises would still create a noticeable racket.
Hiding was impossible.
The only option was to launch a preemptive strike against the zombies.
“That’s perfect! We need the practice anyway,” Su Tang said, delighted.
She hadn’t expected such perfect timing—it was like someone handing her a pillow just as she was about to fall asleep. She quickly nudged Bai Yanxing forward, urging her to head to the shooting range.
At that moment, several people were already stationed on the high walls, sniper rifles in hand. Among them, the two spotted a familiar yet somewhat unfamiliar face.
A head of fiery red hair fluttered wildly in the wind, drawing attention like a beacon.
Oh-ho…
Su Tang’s eyebrows twitched slightly.
This is going to make Bai Yanxing’s jealousy boil over.
The person was none other than Gu Mei. It seemed she had also been conscripted to this location. With a practiced hand, she lightly pulled back the bolt of her rifle, aiming the 8x scope at the distant zombies.
A gunshot rang out.
Two zombies collapsed instantly.
That’s truly impressive…
Even the notoriously arrogant members of the Black Wolf Gang were awestruck.
The Boss of Feather City must have lost her mind to let these people go.
“Amazing, Gu Mei! You’ve won again!”
One of the women grudgingly pulled out Black Wolf Currency from her pocket. Gu Mei accepted it with a smile.
“Thanks.”
As she reloaded her rifle, she noticed Bai Yanxing. She looked surprised.
“Captain Bai, shouldn’t you be practicing archery right now?”
Bai Yanxing was exceptionally skilled with a bow, holding her own even in close combat.
“Not today.”
“Sometimes you need a change of pace.”
Bai Yanxing smiled, found a shooting position, and raised her rifle, aiming at the zombies wandering inside the buildings.
Shooting zombies through glass, especially when they only briefly poked their heads out, was quite challenging.
But…
For some reason, a faint pang of jealousy had been gnawing at Bai Yanxing’s heart. With this thought, she decisively pulled the trigger.
With a series of gunshots, the zombies wandering inside the building collapsed, reduced to mere targets for someone’s pent-up frustration.
Bai Yanxing didn’t pause. She had mastered the technique: aim through the scope, slightly elevate the barrel, and hold her breath.
As if releasing a pent-up rage, Bai Yanxing’s shots never missed. Only one bullet struck the doorframe.
“I never knew Captain Bai was this skilled…”
The onlookers stared in stunned silence.
Bai Yanxing’s arm felt slightly sore, but her gaze remained fixed on Gu Mei. She could kill two birds with one arrow, a feat she couldn’t match. She had to admire her for that.
But one day, she would catch up.
“I just came up here for training today. Sorry for disturbing you all.”
With those words, Bai Yanxing turned and left, as if unwilling to let Su Tang linger there for another second.
The remaining group exchanged awkward glances.
“Why do I feel like I’ve somehow provoked Bai Yanxing?” Gu Mei scratched her cheek sheepishly. She wasn’t a fool; how could she miss the murderous glint in her eyes?
“I don’t know,” one of the Black Wolf Gang members replied.
The others exchanged puzzled glances.
“Heh heh, I know! He’s definitely afraid Miss Su will fall for you. You guys didn’t know, but Su Tang used to like Chen Bin before she met Bai Yanxing.”
“Captain Bai is way better than Chen Bin. They had a zombie-killing competition, and even though she’s a woman, she moved through the zombie horde like it was nothing. She completely outclassed Chen Bin, that big man.”
“I heard Su Tang didn’t shed a single tear when Chen Bin got bitten!”
“Cut it out! Keep gossiping like that and the Alpha will tear your mouth off.”
The others rolled their eyes at the speaker, but her words drifted into Gu Mei’s mind.
So that’s how it is.
If she could win Miss Su’s favor, perhaps she could get her family into the Inner City. The thought had just begun to form in Gu Mei’s mind.
But then she remembered the glance Bai Yanxing had given her as she left—like a venomous tiger. She wouldn’t dare provoke her.
The idea vanished instantly.
Forget it… forget it.
She’d better not touch the dragon’s reverse scale. Sticking to gambling with these guys was the right move.
The Black Wolf Currency she’d earned today should be enough to buy a few sweaters. If she was lucky, she might even get some fresh meat.
“What’s wrong? Still gloomy even on the city wall?” Su Tang asked, catching up to Bai Yanxing.
Bai Yanxing shook her head slightly. “She’s more skilled than me…”
“A double kill with one arrow… I rarely manage that even with a bow.”
Su Tang’s lips curled into a smile. So the Female Lead cared about this kind of thing after all.
“So what? She’s not as beautiful as you.”
Su Tang pulled Bai Yanxing into a secluded corner, where she stumbled against the wall.
