- Chapter 8 - The Book That Opened the Door to a New World
In the book, the female lead’s aversion to touch extended to everyone, including the female lead.
Su Tang understood this perfectly, which was why her grand plan was to desensitize the female lead and make her crave Su Tang’s touch.
“What’s the big deal?” Su Tang said. “You’ll get used to it eventually.”
She went to the side and grabbed two glasses of wine, then handed one to Bai Yanxing. “Want to try it?”
Bai Yanxing wasn’t good at refusing others, so she took the glass and took a small sip. A fiery sensation burned in her throat.
“Cough, cough…”
Bai Yanxing coughed violently, her ears flushing red. She looked strangely adorable, making Su Tang want to reach out and ruffle her hair.
“This wine is too strong,” Bai Yanxing said, though she wasn’t a stranger to alcohol. She just wasn’t used to this particular type.
“Of course it is,” Su Tang said, her eyes curving into crescents like a crescent moon. “It’s our Black Wolf Gang’s own private brew.”
As the saying goes, “Farmer’s wine may not be strong, but two sips will send you tumbling off the rice paddy bank.”
Brewing wine required grain, a luxury even the Black Wolf Gang, which had cultivated vast tracts of farmland, could only produce in limited quantities each year.
Occasionally, they would barter with Feather City for other goods.
Su Tang leaned closer and used her own tissue to wipe a wine stain from Bai Yanxing’s lips. Her focused expression made her heart flutter slightly.
Bai Yanxing couldn’t understand why this girl was being so kind to him.
But she would soon find out.
The banquet ended early, as it couldn’t drag on too late. Holding a party in the dead of night would be a blatant act of defiance against the zombies.
Su Tang led her guests back to her room.
Bai Yanxing hadn’t drunk much and was already sober. A little wine was actually beneficial in winter, helping to warm the body.
Su Tang had her own bathroom, but in this era of severe water scarcity, even as the leader’s daughter, she could only bathe every few days.
After wiping themselves clean with a basin of hot water, the two were ready for bed.
However, it was still early, and Bai Yanxing couldn’t fall asleep. She opened her worn diary and began sketching with a well-used pencil.
Bai Yanxing meticulously depicted the gruesome fates of the zombies she had killed that day.
They were pinned to the walls, arrows piercing precisely through the central regions of their brains.
Indeed, the zombies in this world were a super-powered, ultra-enhanced version. Simply hacking off their heads or necks, or inflicting a few wounds, was utterly ineffective.
They were corrupted by an evil contamination.
Only by destroying the most vital central region of the brain could the connection between the brain and body be severed, halting the contamination.
After drying herself off, Su Tang changed into her pajamas and glanced at a page of the Female Lead’s diary. Even when she’d read the novel, she’d wanted to complain:
Who writes a diary in real life?
But she had to admit, Bai Yanxing’s sketches were remarkably realistic. The zombies he’d drawn were so lifelike, they brought back vivid memories of the day’s gruesome scenes.
“Your drawings are really beautiful,” Su Tang said, forcing herself to praise her despite wanting to vomit at the sight of zombies. Bai Yanxing closed the diary with a hint of embarrassment.
“I’m sorry… for showing you something so crude.”
Su Tang shook her head gently.
“You can’t sleep, can you? I promised you a gift. Why don’t you take a look at it tonight?”
With that, Su Tang rummaged through her backpack and handed Bai Yanxing a book.
The moment Bai Yanxing saw the cover—two women entwined—his ears and cheeks flushed crimson again.
“This is…” she gasped, her breathing quickening.
When the apocalypse first struck, Bai Yanxing had been just a high school student, too young to take the university entrance exams. Now, four or five years later, she was an adult, but her knowledge remained limited to that of a teenager.
Although she recognized all the characters, she knew nothing else about the world beyond them.
“It’s just a novel,” Su Tang said, turning off the main light and leaving only the bedside lamp on. “This is the gift I wanted to give you. You can read it when you’re bored.”
Su Tang said this casually, but she knew perfectly well that this wasn’t a gift at all. It was merely a key she had prepared to unlock the Female Lead’s new world.
With that, she pulled the blanket over herself and fell asleep.
The day’s walking had already drained her energy, and Su Tang drifted off quickly, leaving Bai Yanxing alone, clutching the book, feeling somewhat lost.
Did Bai Yanxing love reading?
Absolutely.
But in the Apocalypse, her backpack rarely contained books. Carrying even one extra book meant expending precious energy.
In this world, energy was especially valuable. Sometimes, that last bit of strength could mean the difference between killing a zombie and securing another chance at survival.
So, despite her love for reading, Bai Yanxing never carried books in her backpack.
Her pack was filled with arrows, emergency medical supplies, and food.
Driven by a mix of curiosity and a thirst for knowledge, Bai Yanxing’s trembling fingers flipped open the book. The first page revealed a meticulously detailed color illustration.
It depicted a city bathed in the glow of a rainy night. Two figures leaned against a window, one of them with her shirt completely unbuttoned, exposing a pale, delicate shoulder.
A closer look would reveal several crimson lip marks on the man’s neck.
With just a glance, Bai Yanxing felt too embarrassed to continue reading. What kind of book did Su Tang give me?
Despite her embarrassment, she couldn’t resist turning the page.
The next illustration showed both figures wearing white bathrobes, their long, slender legs exposed. Their hands were tightly clasped together, and one seemed about to kiss the other.
Bai Yanxing’s fingers trembled as she flipped through the illustrations and began to immerse herself in the story.
Before the pandemic, she had been too busy studying, her phone confiscated by her parents. After the apocalypse struck, she had been consumed by survival.
Bai Yanxing had never read a novel like this before.
He was immediately captivated.
When she reached the scene where the two characters confessed their feelings for each other, Bai Yanxing’s mind went blank. In that moment, she began to dimly understand something.
So, she thought of Su Tang as her benefactor, but Su Tang wanted to get her!
As Bai Yanxing read on, she felt no fatigue whatsoever. However, knowing she had to wake up early the next day, she reluctantly tore off a corner of the diary, folded it into a bookmark, and tucked the book under her pillow, planning to continue reading tomorrow.
Yet, after reading this book, Bai Yanxing found herself instinctively wanting to keep her distance from Su Tang.
Not out of fear.
But out of fear that he, like the protagonist in the book, would gradually fall in love with Su Tang through their daily interactions and become unable to break free.
But as fate would have it, what one fears most often comes to pass.
Bai Yanxing felt herself drifting into a sweet dream. In it, Su Tang wore a slightly open bathrobe, leaning against the rain-streaked window.
Her soft, gentle voice whispered, “Sister, do you like me?”
Her voice was so enchanting, it seemed to penetrate straight into her heart.
