- Chapter 11 - It's... It's a Steamed Bun Selling Team?!
“Stay at the Heaven Origin Sect and cultivate diligently until your father and I return!”
Although Ruan Dongling was dissatisfied with the new identity Feng Yunxi had arranged for her, she understood that her mother was acting in her best interest and nodded obediently.
Seeing her daughter’s compliance, Feng Yunxi felt even more heartache.
It seems my daughter truly suffered greatly at the Dustless Sect.
The girl who had once been so innocent, carefree, and willful had transformed into this docile, understanding child.
Ruan Dongling had hoped to spend more time with her mother, but Feng Yunxi simply left her by a dilapidated temple outside Spirit Mist City and departed with Jiang Yan.
Feng Yunxi explained that while her ninth-layer Qi Refining cultivation had been sealed, making her appear as an ordinary person who hadn’t yet drawn Qi into her body, retracing her cultivation path would allow her accumulated power to directly propel her through the Foundation Establishment barrier.
In other words, if Ruan Dongling could simply cultivate from the first to the ninth layer again, achieving Foundation Establishment would be a natural progression.
After Feng Yunxi’s explanation, the last trace of dissatisfaction in Ruan Dongling’s heart vanished.
Feng Yunxi gave Ruan Dongling a recommendation token and instructed her to follow the standard sect admission procedures.
She told her that the three major sects, six minor sects, and thirteen smaller factions were all recruiting disciples at the foot of the mountains outside Spirit Mist City.
Today was likely the final day of recruitment, so Ruan Dongling should hurry to take the Spirit Root Test and join a sect, reminding her not to get distracted by play and forget.
Jiang Yan steered the Flying Sword into the sky once more, watching Ruan Dongling’s figure shrink below. A deep sense of reluctance crossed Feng Yunxi’s face.
“Miss, given Ling’er’s talent, Sect Leader Ding will undoubtedly accept her as a disciple…”
“He’ll likely see through her sealed cultivation with a single glance. What exactly is your purpose in doing this?” Jiang Yan asked, puzzled by Feng Yunxi’s actions.
Feng Yunxi sighed. “Ding Chengyang has already reached the peak of the Spirit Transformation realm. Naturally, he can see through my methods…”
“By entrusting Ling’er to him in this way, he will surely understand my intentions…”
“Even if it weren’t Ding Chengyang, the other elders who have seen Ling’er would easily see through this simple trick. But like Ding Chengyang, they will understand my heartfelt intentions…”
“Ling’er’s nature is restless. It’s likely this spell will be broken soon, revealing her true appearance. When that happens, those who recognize her will simply pretend not to know her.”
“Ding Chengyang isn’t like those other old fools. He cares for the world and possesses great compassion… He won’t hesitate to let Ling’er endure hardship…”
Jiang Yan seemed to realize something, her expression turning sorrowful. “Young Miss… she…”
Feng Yunxi fell silent, her beautiful eyes gazing blankly into the distance as she murmured, “This is her fate…”
“And ours too…”
“But as her mother, I will fight to carve out a new path for her this time!”
As she spoke, Feng Yunxi’s expression became utterly resolute.
Ruan Dongling watched Jiang Yan and Feng Yunxi depart on their swords. She brushed imaginary dust from her robes and headed toward the foot of the mountain outside the city.
From a distance, Ruan Dongling could see a bustling crowd gathered at the mountain’s base, a lively scene indeed.
With her cultivation sealed, Ruan Dongling was now just an ordinary person, forced to rely on her own two legs to move forward.
Many mortals clutched recommendation tokens, waiting before their desired Sects, hoping to pass the trials and enter the Sects to cultivate immortality, thus escaping their mortal status.
Ruan Dongling surveyed the dense crowd, squatted on a rock, and scratched her head.
Which one is the Heaven Origin Sect’s line?
The crowd was so dense that Ruan Dongling couldn’t distinguish the Heaven Origin Sect’s line.
She stood on tiptoe on the rock, peering over the crowd, but found no banners or signs marking the front of any line!
It was impossible to tell them apart!
Just then, a young man with half a steamed bun in his mouth dashed past Ruan Dongling like a gust of wind.
With lightning reflexes, Ruan Dongling grabbed the young man’s sleeve.
“Hey, hey, hey! I need to get back in line… What do you think you’re doing?!”
The young man finally swallowed his steamed bun and glared at Ruan Dongling.
“Sorry, I just wanted to ask which team belongs to the Heaven Origin Sect?” Ruan Dongling plastered on a smile.
“That one!” The young man pointed to a team before sprinting away without looking back.
Ruan Dongling glanced at the longest queue and nodded knowingly.
The Heaven Origin Sect is the strongest, so naturally, the most people would want to join. Hmm, that must be it!
She walked to the end of the line and joined the queue.
By late afternoon, Ruan Dongling was so sleepy she dozed off standing up—a skill honed during her school days.
When only about ten people remained ahead of her, she jolted awake.
Yawning, Ruan Dongling perked up and looked ahead, only to feel her heart turn to ice!
In disbelief, she darted out of line, circled to the front, and nearly exploded with rage.
“How… how… is this place actually selling steamed buns?” Ruan Dongling’s voice trembled.
After queuing for half the day, it turned out to be a steamed bun stall!
“What’s so special about selling steamed buns? Look over there—there’s a stall selling fried dough sticks, another selling wontons, and another selling pastries…”
“With so many people here, and none of them having the ability to survive without food like immortals, they have to eat, right? Sigh… Go on, go on! Don’t keep me from selling my buns!”
Seeing that Ruan Dongling wasn’t buying any buns, the stall owner shooed her away.
Having been tricked, Ruan Dongling muttered to herself, “That bastard better not let me catch him, or I’ll chop him into eight pieces and tear him apart limb by limb!”
Fortunately, the queue had thinned considerably, and Ruan Dongling could now faintly see the disciples from various sects conducting the Spirit Root Tests.
Suddenly, her eyes lit up as she spotted a familiar face!
Finally, she realized that this particular queue belonged to the Heaven Origin Sect!
Seeing everyone patiently waiting in line for the Spirit Root Test, Ruan Dongling had no choice but to join the back of the queue.
Bored out of her mind while waiting, she stood on tiptoe, craning her neck to peer ahead.
Suddenly, someone nudged her arm. “Want to cut the line?”
Ruan Dongling turned to see a young man in coarse, earth-toned clothing leaning in conspiratorially, his voice lowered to a whisper.
The young man had a comical appearance with his slanting eyebrows and tiny eyes.
“How do you cut the line?” Ruan Dongling asked curiously.
“One Spirit Stone gets you into the top ten!” The young man’s face lit up at the prospect of a deal.
Ruan Dongling glanced at the long queue, nodded, and handed over a low-grade Spirit Stone.
“Alright, follow me!” The young man pocketed the Spirit Stone, straightened his back, and led Ruan Dongling toward the front of the line.
Reaching the tenth person in line, he shoved Ruan Dongling ahead of them. “You stand here!”
The person who had been cut in line immediately protested, cursing at Ruan Dongling.
The young man pulled the protester aside. “It’s not her fault! If you want to yell, yell at me!”
Ruan Dongling watched as the young man began trading insults with the person behind her.
Ah… this is awkward…
By now, not only the person in front of Ruan Dongling was displeased, but several others behind her as well.
Undaunted, the young man engaged in a verbal battle royale, holding his own against four or five people simultaneously!
