- Chapter 29 - The Adorable Little Frog Demon
“Pah! You’re talking nonsense!”
“I’m not a demon beast! You’re the demon beast! Let go of me! You beautiful, wicked woman!”
The little beggar’s face flushed crimson as he struggled frantically, but his short legs couldn’t break free.
“You’re not a demon beast? Then why are you afraid to let me place this stone on your forehead?”
Ruan Dongling held the little beggar with one hand and slowly extended the Demon Sealing Stone toward his face with the other.
The little beggar’s eyes were large and round, blinking adorably. But now, those eyes were brimming with tears. He strained to tilt his head back, desperately trying to avoid the Demon Sealing Stone.
Ruan Dongling abruptly withdrew the stone. “If you’re not a demon beast, why are you dodging?”
Realizing he couldn’t bluff his way out, green markings suddenly appeared on the little beggar’s face. His tongue shot out, long and sticky, lashing toward Ruan Dongling’s face.
Ruan Dongling dodged the tongue and flicked the little beggar’s forehead. His head snapped back, his face contorting in pain as he bared his teeth, and his tongue retreated.
“Despicable Human Race! Stop toying with Lord Frog! Kill me if you dare!”
“You’re a little frog?” Ruan Dongling asked, intrigued by her first encounter with a small demon beast.
“Pah! Vile humans, treacherous and cunning! How dare you ambush me!” The Little Frog Demon rubbed his throbbing forehead, his face contorted with fury.
“Ambush? How did I ambush you?” Ruan Dongling asked, genuinely confused.
“If it wasn’t an ambush, why did you capture me and refuse to let me go?” The Little Frog Demon’s face burned with righteous indignation.
“Uh… I just wanted to tell you that your pants have a hole in them, exposing your… you know…”
The Little Frog Demon froze, his face instantly turning a patchwork of red and green, like a painted opera performer.
“Despicable humans! Shameless beyond measure! Even a tiny frog demon like me isn’t safe from your lewd advances…”
Though his words dripped with venom, the Little Frog Demon’s actions betrayed his bravado. He abandoned the broken bowl he had been clutching, hastily tugged up his sagging pants, and discreetly covered the hole in his rear with one hand.
“You’re just a little frog demon with no cultivation. How did you even escape?” Ruan Dongling asked, crouching down to meet his gaze.
“I… I don’t know. When I went to sleep, I was still a tadpole, my limbs hadn’t even fully developed yet…”
“When I opened my eyes, I was suddenly here… Surrounded by humans. It was terrifying…”
The Little Frog Demon, realizing that Ruan Dongling, this seemingly despicable human, wasn’t so bad after all, rubbed his forehead and murmured softly.
“Huh? You just transformed from a tadpole into a frog? And you can already shapeshift?”
Demon beasts typically need to cultivate to the Second-Tier to fully transform, which is equivalent to reaching the Foundation Establishment Stage in human cultivation.
Some demon beasts possess an Innate Divine Ability that allows them to maintain a human form, but only for short periods. This ability differs from true transformation; one grants a genuine human body, while the other merely sustains a human appearance.
This Little Frog Demon must be a prodigy, possessing such an Innate Divine Ability.
The Demonic Qi emanating from the Little Frog Demon was incredibly faint, suggesting he had only recently awakened his consciousness. Yet he had managed to convincingly disguise himself as a young beggar, leaving no trace of his true nature.
If Ruan Dongling hadn’t detected the faint Demonic Qi on the beggar, she would have been completely fooled.
The little beggar nodded. “I don’t know why I can transform like this, but Little Turtle and the others…”
The Little Frog Demon suddenly clapped a hand over his mouth, as if he had let something slip.
The green markings on his face faded, and his large eyes blinked at her again, looking pitiful.
“You’re a demon beast, so why are you afraid of humans?” Ruan Dongling asked, genuinely puzzled.
“Even when I was just a tadpole, I heard other demon beasts say that the Human Race is the most despicable, shameless, treacherous, and cunning of all. They only want to capture us demon beasts, flay us alive, and use our flesh and bl00d to refine Medicinal Pills, our tendons and bones to forge Magic Artifacts, and even devour our demon cores to enhance their cultivation. They’re utterly wicked!”
The Little Frog Demon spoke with solemn earnestness, completely forgetting that Ruan Dongling, who was squatting before him, was also a human.
Hearing his words, Ruan Dongling had to admit he had a point.
Many Medicinal Pills and Magic Artifacts indeed required materials harvested from demon beasts.
The Little Frog Demon wasn’t entirely wrong.
“Have you ever eaten a human?”
Ruan Dongling sensed no human aura emanating from the Little Frog Demon.
After a demon beast consumes human flesh, it emits a distinct human aura that only cultivators can detect.
Humans, as the spirit of all creation, possess a natural advantage over demon beasts on the path of cultivation.
Demon beasts must first attain human form before they can truly embark on the path to immortality.
Many demon beasts, due to their innate limitations and lack of talent, had no hope of ever transforming into human form.
In other words, being born human was the ultimate goal for countless demon beasts.
Some powerful demon beasts would even capture Cultivators, devouring their flesh and bl00d essence to enhance their own cultivation.
Great Demons who had slaughtered countless lives were often shrouded in a miasma of bl00d qi, their bodies haunted by the lingering resentment of their victims.
Cultivators used this aura to gauge a demon beast’s malevolence, classifying them accordingly and imprisoning them in different levels of the Demon Suppression Tower.
The Demon Suppression Tower, an Ancient Divine Artifact, stood nine stories tall. The higher the floor, the more formidable the demon beasts imprisoned within.
“Pah! Lord Frog feeds on the spiritual essence of heaven and earth, cultivating by drinking dew and other rootless waters. I’d never stoop to oppressing other creatures like the Human Race does!” The Little Frog Demon spat disdainfully, his contempt palpable.
“Little Frog Demon, the outside world is far too dangerous. Don’t you know that even without Cultivators, stronger demon beasts would swallow you whole without a second thought?
“Even though you barely have an ounce of flesh on you, your demon core still has some value. The greatest threat to you isn’t us Cultivators—it’s other demon beasts!”
“N-no way… My demon core is just this tiny! Would… would other demon beasts really want it?”
The Little Frog Demon knew Ruan Dongling was right, his small face turning deathly pale, but he stubbornly refused to admit it.
He gestured with his dirty little hand to illustrate the size of his demon core, as if describing a grain of rice.
Competition among demon beasts was particularly brutal, as devouring another’s demon core was the most effective way to enhance one’s cultivation.
“So, you should come back with me. The Demon Suppression Tower might be restrictive, but it’s better than losing your life, right?” Ruan Dongling reasoned patiently.
The Little Frog Demon crouched down, drawing circles in the dirt with his finger. “Alright, I’ll go back with you…”
Ruan Dongling patted the little frog’s head and retrieved the Demon Sealing Stone, preparing to seal him inside. But just as she was about to activate it, the Little Frog Demon spoke again.
“Oh, right! I have some friends too. Can you take us all back?”
“The Human Realm is so dangerous! Little Turtle almost got caught and turned into soup!” The Little Frog Demon suddenly remembered something and looked up at Ruan Dongling.
“Of course! Take me to them right away!”
The Little Frog Demon nodded, quickly stood up, and led Ruan Dongling into the narrow alleyway.
The alleyway twisted and turned, littered with debris. Worn-out bamboo baskets and winnowing fans were piled haphazardly everywhere.
The Little Frog Demon led Ruan Dongling to a corner filled with junk and flipped over a broken bamboo basket.
Hidden beneath it were a pitch-black turtle, a bright yellow lizard, and a dusty gray hedgehog.
As soon as the basket was lifted, the three creatures trembled. The hedgehog and lizard scrambled under the turtle, nearly flipping it over.
Each of the small animals emitted a faint trace of Demonic Qi.
So that’s it, Ruan Dongling thought. This Little Frog Demon is quite loyal. It must have sensed my arrival and ran out to lure me away, all to protect these three little ones.
“Biebie, Xiao Ci, Jiji, don’t be scared! It’s me!” the Little Frog Demon quickly crouched down to reassure them. “We can all go home now! No more living in fear in the Human Realm!”
Ruan Dongling collected all four small demon beasts into the Demon Sealing Stone.
Weighing the stone in her hand, she wondered, If it’s just small demon beasts like these, then Qi Refining Stage disciples would have been sufficient. Why send Foundation Establishment disciples as well?
