- Chapter 35 - A Strange Dream
Wei Guang shook his head, indicating he didn’t know either.
“Senior Brother Wei Guang! We can’t save someone with such a dubious background! It’s too dangerous!”
Wei Guang frowned slightly. “Saving a life is more meritorious than building a seven-tiered pagoda! As fellow cultivators, how can we abandon someone in mortal peril?”
Zhong Zimuo choked on his words. He didn’t actually care whether Wei Guang saved the person; his real concern was whether Wei Guang had killed Ruan Dongling. Even seeing her suffer a little would have been satisfying.
He quickly changed the subject.
“So, Senior Brother Wei Guang, where did that demoness flee?”
Wei Guang glanced at Zhong Zimuo. “She’s not a demoness. She’s your Junior Sister.”
Zhong Zimuo froze, his mouth agape, speechless.
Seeing Zhong Zimuo’s reaction, Wei Guang realized he had indeed been used as a pawn.
He stopped speaking to Zhong Zimuo, beckoned another cultivator, and together they supported the white-robed figure as they turned to leave.
“Senior Brother! Senior Brother! Senior Brother Wei Guang!” Zhong Zimuo hurriedly chased after them.
“Junior Brother Zimo, our sects are different. It’s best we part ways here.”
“Wei Guang will never forget your kindness, Junior Brother. Once I return to my sect, I will repay you a hundredfold!”
“Farewell!”
With these words, Wei Guang and the other cultivator mounted their swords and soared away.
Zhong Zimuo watched Wei Guang’s retreating figure, his face so dark it seemed to drip with malice.
Zhong Zimuo had painstakingly cultivated a relationship with the Holy Son of the Spirit Cloud Holy Land, earning his trust.
The Holy Son had never left his Sect since birth, and this was his first journey into the world. As pure as a blank sheet of paper, he was easily deceived.
On his first outing, Wei Guang had no idea that silver was the currency used in the Human Realm. He paid with Spirit Stones and was swindled out of a fortune.
Zhong Zimuo stepped in, retrieving the stolen Spirit Stones and guiding Wei Guang to exchange them for silver.
With just a few words, Zhong Zimuo had completely won Wei Guang’s trust.
Realizing his lack of worldly experience, Wei Guang sent a message back to his Sect explaining the situation.
The Sect dispatched another disciple to accompany him.
Only then did Zhong Zimuo begin traveling with the two of them.
Wei Guang’s journey wasn’t merely a sightseeing trip; he was on a mission.
Zhong Zimuo knew only that Wei Guang was tasked with retrieving something from a Demonic Cultivator.
They tracked the Demonic Cultivator across the land, chasing him relentlessly.
Wei Guang ultimately slew the Demonic Cultivator, but the object they sought had vanished.
Wei Guang suspected the Demonic Cultivator had either hidden it somewhere or passed it to another Demonic Cultivator.
Thus, the trio continued their travels, slaying any Demonic Cultivators they encountered.
While traveling and slaying Demonic Cultivators, they continued searching for the artifact’s trail.
This led to their first encounter with Ruan Dongling.
Originally, Zhong Zimuo had been absolutely confident that he could obtain what he wanted through the Holy Son. But now, everything had been ruined!
He had truly failed to steal the chicken and lost the rice, even having his sword cleaved in two by Ruan Dongling!
Zhong Zimuo now harbored a venomous hatred for Ruan Dongling.
Yet he conveniently forgot that this entire predicament was of his own making.
He had never anticipated that Ruan Dongling would meet with Wei Guang alone and reveal the entire truth to him!
“Too Flashy, Too Flashy, come back!” After parting ways with Wei Guang, Ruan Dongling fled at breakneck speed.
As she ran, she mentally contacted Too Flashy.
Because of their spiritual contract, Too Flashy could sense his master’s thoughts.
Ruan Dongling sprinted for dozens of miles before finally stopping to rest.
No, it’s still not safe.
Gazing at the sky, she pressed her fingers against her tongue and let out a long, piercing whistle.
It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have let Too Flashy wander off on his own!
I should have kept him by my side, ready to carry me away at a moment’s notice!
The mental link between Ruan Dongling and Too Flashy assured her that he was approaching.
True to form, a moment later, Too Flashy’s dazzling silhouette emerged from the clouds.
Too Flashy circled once before landing at Ruan Dongling’s feet.
Having clearly enjoyed some adventure, Too Flashy seemed particularly excited.
Ruan Dongling stroked Too Flashy’s head.
Suddenly, Too Flashy blinked, stretched its neck, and stared intently at the top of Ruan Dongling’s head.
Then, it actually pecked at her hair.
Ruan Dongling hurriedly shielded her hair with her hand. “Too Flashy, if you dare peck Xiao Die, I’ll pluck your feathers and roast you for dinner!”
Too Flashy quickly retracted its head but continued to gaze curiously at the top of Ruan Dongling’s head.
“Xiao Die Demon, are you alright?” Ruan Dongling asked, finally feeling the Little Butterfly Demon’s presence.
Afraid of damaging the Little Butterfly Demon’s wings, Ruan Dongling kept her hand hovering protectively.
“I’m fine…” the Little Butterfly Demon finally replied.
Hearing its voice, Ruan Dongling felt truly relieved.
She retrieved a mirror from her Storage Pouch and checked her reflection.
Hey, not bad! The Little Butterfly Demon’s hair ornament actually looked quite striking.
And the best part? It was completely unique!
Riding on Too Flashy’s back, Ruan Dongling casually remarked, “Too Flashy, you seem awfully cheerful. Did you find a little lady bird somewhere?”
Too Flashy tilted his neck back and let out a long, resounding cry in response.
With a powerful flap of his wings, Too Flashy soared into the sky, and Ruan Dongling finally felt a bit safer.
The Cultivation World was truly dangerous.
Good thing she was quick-witted enough to escape!
Two slots on the Demon Sealing Stone remained unfilled, meaning she still needed to capture a dozen more small demon beasts before returning to the Sect.
This time, Ruan Dongling resolved never to venture into the deep mountains and forests again. She would stick to the city.
After all, there were plenty of demon beasts in the city too!
Oh, and she still hadn’t bought Senior Brother Duan’s Jade Forest Wine.
After considering her tasks, she pointed in a random direction and said, “Too Flashy, let’s go that way!”
Too Flashy responded with a cry and flapped his wings, flying toward the direction Ruan Dongling had indicated.
Exhausted from the past few days, Ruan Dongling promptly fell asleep on Too Flashy’s back.
She dreamed.
A very strange dream.
In her dream, she saw a woman dressed in fiery red robes.
The woman’s figure was graceful, her waist as slender as a willow branch, and her long hair cascaded like a waterfall. Yet she remained stubbornly turned away from Ruan Dongling.
No matter how Ruan Dongling shifted, she could only see the woman’s back.
The woman’s fiery aura drew Ruan Dongling closer, almost against her will.
But the distance between them remained fixed at five steps, impossible to close.
Ruan Dongling felt like a lecherous fool, her heart aching with longing to see the woman’s face.
It must be a face that could topple kingdoms.
“Sister, sister, turn around! Turn around and let me see you…”
“Sister… sister…”
Undeterred, Ruan Dongling kept calling out, hoping the woman would turn around on her own.
Her persistence seemed to finally move the woman. Slowly, she began to turn her head…
Ruan Dongling felt her heart pounding so hard it might burst from her chest…
“Ling’er… save me… save me…” The woman in red only turned her head slightly.
