- Chapter 61 - Little Monk Chengyuan
A bloodcurdling scream pierced the air. The Sword Cultivator dropped his sword, stumbled back two steps, and clutched his face, howling in agony. Bl00d streamed between his fingers.
The other two Cultivators froze, immediately assuming defensive stances.
Before them stood a petite, silver-white fox, its teeth bared in fury as it shielded the Little Monk.
The Little Monk’s serene expression shattered. “What are you doing, little one?” he cried in panic. “Run! They’ll kill you! Don’t worry about me, just run!”
But the silver fox ignored his words, standing firm before him.
Ruan Dongling noticed bloodstains on the fox’s leg and back, indicating severe injuries.
“Hahaha! This is too easy!” the injured Cultivator roared. “We were wondering where to find you, you beast, and you just waltz right into our trap!”
“Junior Brother, slaughter this creature! It dared to scratch my eye—I’ll flay it alive!”
The Cultivator, his eye clawed by the fox, was driven mad by fear and pain.
“You beast! You actually care about this little bald donkey enough to come back and save him? Well, the little bald donkey did risk his life to save yours!”
“You two are a perfect match! One’s a true beast, a fox, and the other’s a fake beast, a bald donkey!”
“Since that’s the case, you can both die together!”
The two cultivators raised their swords and charged at the little fox.
Just as the little fox and the Little Monk were about to meet their end, a fiery red sword shadow flashed through the air, severing the injured cultivator’s neck in a single strike!
Ruan Dongling landed gracefully, catching the Crimson Cloud Sword as it flew back to her.
“You two Green King Turtles are worse than beasts!”
Ruan Dongling wasted no words. These two cultivators were only at the mid-Foundation Establishment stage; she could crush them like ants.
“Where did this little b1tch come from, sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong?! She’s asking for death!”
The two green-robed cultivators, thwarted again in their attempt to seize the treasure, seethed with rage. They vowed to kill this meddling woman!
After exchanging just two moves with Ruan Dongling, their hearts sank. They finally realized the danger and tried to flee.
But Ruan Dongling wouldn’t let them escape. She dispatched them swiftly and efficiently.
The little fox had been fierce and imposing when facing the green-robed cultivator, but now, seeing Ruan Dongling approach the Little Monk, it began to retreat, its once-erect tail drooping behind it, looking both frightened and pitiful.
Silver Treasure Foxes were weak in combat, among the weakest of Spirit Beasts.
Because every part of their bodies was considered a treasure, they had been hunted to near extinction by cultivators.
“Don’t be afraid, little one,” Ruan Dongling said gently. “I won’t hurt you. Here, have a Spirit Fruit…”
During her time at the Dustless Sect, Ruan Dongling had taken on a long-term sect mission to care for Spirit Beasts. She was experienced in tending to these creatures, and seeing the Silver Treasure Fox in such a state filled her with compassion.
She retrieved a Spirit Fruit from her Storage Pouch, slowly crouched down, and offered it to the fox.
The Silver Treasure Fox first glanced up at Ruan Dongling, then cautiously approached her. It snatched the Spirit Fruit in one bite and darted behind the Little Monk.
Only then did Ruan Dongling realize that the green light binding the Little Monk was actually three vine-like plant tendrils.
She swung her sword to cut them, but the tendrils only tightened further.
Upon closer inspection, Ruan Dongling noticed countless tiny thorns protruding from the vines, each now embedded in the Little Monk’s skin.
Within mere breaths, the once-green vines began to flush with a faint crimson hue as they absorbed his bl00d.
“This thing is alive!” Ruan Dongling exclaimed, startled by the realization.
She channeled her Spiritual Power into the Crimson Cloud Sword and struck with lightning speed. With a searing shriii, the vines snapped, emitting piercing screams as they severed.
A faint trail of bl00d oozed from the severed ends.
The vines fell to the ground and immediately began to slither into the surrounding undergrowth.
Ruan Dongling’s eyes and hands moved with lightning reflexes, swiftly seizing three escaping vines.
The vines writhed in her grasp like freshly caught fish, struggling desperately to break free.
Ruan Dongling twisted the three vines together into a tight knot and tossed them to the ground.
Each vine strained in a different direction, pulling with all its might, but none could budge the others. They merely spun in place, trapped in a chaotic dance.
“The stability of a triangle truly holds!” Ruan Dongling remarked.
The Little Monk, now freed, immediately pressed his palms together and bowed in a Buddhist salute to Ruan Dongling. “Many thanks for your assistance, Fellow Daoist!”
“What’s your name?” Ruan Dongling asked, offering the little monk several Medicinal Pills for healing, bl00d replenishment, and qi restoration.
“This humble monk is Chengyuan, a personal disciple of Venerable Huineng of the Zen Sect,” he replied. “Thank you, Fellow Daoist, for the pills.”
After introducing himself, the little monk glanced up at Ruan Dongling, froze for a moment, then immediately lowered his head, chanting Buddhist mantras incessantly.
The little monk had delicate features, fair skin, and an ethereal, otherworldly aura.
“I’m a disciple of the Heaven Origin Sect. We’re both from True Martial Prefecture, so there’s no need for formalities,” Ruan Dongling said.
“Where are these three Green King Turtles from?” Ruan Dongling gestured with her chin toward the three corpses.
Little Monk Chengyuan blushed crimson, keeping his head bowed and avoiding her gaze. He stammered, “Th-they aren’t cultivators from True Martial Prefecture.”
“That’s why I’m asking where they’re from.”
“Th-this humble monk doesn’t know…”
The cultivators from other prefectures dressed slightly differently from those in True Martial Prefecture. Each of the Nine Provinces of the Six Suns Continent had its own distinct attire. These three cultivators didn’t match the style of any prefecture Ruan Dongling had encountered before.
Realizing the little monk had little information, Ruan Dongling walked over to the corpses and unceremoniously took their three Storage Pouches.
“So they’re from Tongming Prefecture!”
Ruan Dongling discovered a Sect Token in one of the Storage Pouches.
It belonged to a Sect from Tongming Prefecture.
This was thanks to Ruan Dongling’s extensive reading.
The Silver Treasure Fox, having finished its Spirit Fruit, quietly approached Ruan Dongling from behind and let out a soft whimper.
Ruan Dongling turned around, spotted the little fox, and immediately crouched down.
“You’re hurt! Come here, let me apply some medicine. You’ll be better in no time!”
She tentatively picked up the Silver Treasure Fox.
The little creature seemed to trust Ruan Dongling completely, gently nuzzling its head against her hand.
Ruan Dongling noticed a sword wound on the fox’s back and a bloody hole on its right hind leg, likely from a thrown weapon.
She retrieved a medicinal ointment for external injuries and carefully applied it to the fox’s wounds.
Then, she fed it a bl00d-replenishing Medicinal Pill.
The Silver Treasure Fox seemed to adore Ruan Dongling. After the ointment was applied, it climbed onto her shoulder and refused to get down.
Little Monk Chengyuan watched in astonishment, his eyes filled with confusion.
How could this be happening?
