Transmigrating into a Wasteland Cannon Fodder Slag A [GL Yuri] - Chapter 12
When Gu Xia opened her eyes, Yan An was already washing up.
When conditions didn’t allow for it, that was one thing. But now that they had the means, why wouldn’t she?
Yan An’s space still held toothpaste, soap, even facial cleanser. Leaving those things behind would only mean they get wasted and zombies wouldn’t use them. And if the supplies were left to rot after the store was overrun, that would be an even bigger shame.
“You’re awake.” Noticing Gu Xia’s gaze, Yan An turned and smiled, wiping her face clean with a damp towel.
She carried the basin of dirty water into a corner, then peered outside. The few zombies that had been nearby were nowhere in sight, either someone had dealt with them, or they had wandered off elsewhere.
As for Chen Hao, he did have some skill, at least enough to crawl out of a nest of zombies alive.
Still, Yan An didn’t believe his F-rank frost ability was that impressive. Could there be a passage they didn’t know about?
It was possible. After all, the schematics they had were pieced together from memory and far from complete. If there was a hidden escape route somewhere, they wouldn’t know it.
And considering the car he’d shown up in, a sturdy off-road vehicle, far better than theirs. He had clearly been prepared to flee at any moment.
Yan An tore open a bag of bread, eating half, then twisted the cap off a box of milk, sipping it while standing casually.
When she’d woken earlier, Gu Xia had been nestled against her. She had looked nothing like the wary, guarded girl she was while awake.
The thought stirred Yan An’s mischievous side. She’d pulled out her phone and snapped a picture, preserving the evidence of Gu Xia leaning against her.
Only after that did she carefully slip her arm out from beneath Gu Xia’s neck.
Recalling her docile sleeping expression, Yan An chuckled and teased, “Classmate Gu, weren’t you supposed to wake me up to take over the night watch?”
At that, Gu Xia flushed faintly. It had been the middle of the night, and after staying tense for so long, once everything grew quiet, drowsiness had swept over her before she knew it.
“Sorry.” Relief colored her voice. If anything had happened during her lapse, no apology would have been enough to make up for it.
Yan An saw how seriously Gu Xia was apologizing and chuckled. “What are you apologizing for? Neither the zombies nor Chen Hao can get in. If anything tries, it’ll make enough noise. Standing watch isn’t that big of a deal.”
Really, Gu Xia just had too little sense of security. That was why she refused to sleep. But once she saw Yan An resting soundly beside her, she couldn’t hold out either.
To keep them from dwelling on the subject, Yan An turned her gaze to the deceptively calm street outside.
“Now we have two options: stay put, or head out.”
The choice was obvious. Staying here meant the convenience store’s supplies would last them a while, but eventually, they’d run out. Waiting here was no different from waiting to die.
If they went out, the zombies were manageable but they’d have to face Chen Hao.
Yan An wanted to reach the Pingzhou military base. For her, leaving was the only real plan. Still, she asked for Gu Xia’s opinion.
Though truth be told, Gu Xia’s choice wouldn’t change her decision.
“Go out,” Gu Xia said after a long pause. “I want to go into the city.”
“The city? Why?” Yan An almost said outright, Are you crazy?
The city was the most densely populated area. After the outbreak, that also meant the highest concentration of zombies. Two people walking in there was practically suicide.
“I need to find my family.” Gu Xia’s tone was firm. “I have to know they’re alive.”
She’d tried calling countless times, dialing that familiar number engraved in her memory, but there was never any signal.
To find her family, huh…
Yan An had lost hers long ago. She knew the longing for kin too well. If it were her, if she knew her parents might be in danger, no matter how slim the chance of survival, she would go too.
She could understand Gu Xia. But her family wasn’t in that city. “Then first we get out of here. Once we’re safe and find another car, we’ll split up.”
Her meaning was clear: she wouldn’t risk her own life to accompany Gu Xia into the city.
Where Gu Xia went after that was her choice. Yan An had no right to interfere. All she could do was leave her with more supplies.
“Alright.” Gu Xia understood perfectly.
Finding her family was her own burden. She couldn’t drag someone else into it.
The air was getting heavy, so Yan An smiled to lighten the mood. “Come on, wash up and eat. I’ll show you later what it means to be the Drift King.”
“Drift King? What’s that, some mountain?” Gu Xia tilted her head, puzzled.
Yan An blinked. Oh, right! This world didn’t have *Fujiwara Takumi.[is a fictional Japanese manga character who’s a former street racer and retired rally championship driver with a title and several records held.]
She gave an awkward laugh. “It just means I call myself the king of driving.”
Gu Xia’s face showed a trace of helplessness, but deep down, doubt flickered.
At school, Yan An had been a serious, responsible, honest top student. After the apocalypse, she had turned selfish, petty and cruel. The classic case of someone revealing their smallness once they got a taste of power.
But now… now Yan An was completely different. Her thoughts were clear. She was bright, lively, even humorous at times. More importantly, there was an undeniable confidence about her, not the brittle front of someone bluffing, but the kind born of real strength.
Whether in school or when the apocalypse first came, Yan An had always carried insecurity deep in her bones.
That insecurity was gone. This Yan An radiated a self-assurance that came only with true capability.
Yan An suddenly leaned in close. “What are you spacing out for? Not going to pack up?”
Faced with her sunny, dazzling face, Gu Xia felt a flicker of warmth in her chest.
At any time, seeing a face like this could lift your mood.
“Alright,” Gu Xia murmured.
Yan An’s smile grew wider. She grabbed a backpack and started stuffing in supplies.
She didn’t intend to hide her ability from Gu Xia, but since Gu Xia hadn’t asked, she saw no need to explain.
A bag slung over her shoulder could cover up a lot.
She packed small, dense, filling foods, strapped the bag tight, then picked up a loudspeaker. Recording her voice, she cheerfully sang;
“Hey girl across the way, look over here~ look over here~ I’m really, really super cute~”
She couldn’t remember the real lyrics or even the tune, so she just improvised.
Gu Xia, never having heard the song, thought she was just making things up. Her face was thicker than a city wall.
******
Once everything was ready, Yan An clipped the loudspeaker to her waist, coiled a long electrical cord into her bag that’s stronger than most ropes and just as useful and finally rolled up the shutter door.
The moment she stepped outside, Chen Hao emerged from behind the gas tank, staring straight at her. His hand slid across his throat in a mock killing gesture.
Yan An’s pupils narrowed sharply. Then she broke into a smile. At this point, there was no need to pretend weakness.
Not only that, she snatched the bread Gu Xia had just bitten into and waved it at Chen Hao, her expression smug and infuriating.
Gu Xia rushed over in alarm. The last thing she expected was for Yan An to deliberately provoke him, let alone steal her bread in the process.
And when Yan An bit into it viciously, Gu Xia could only avert her gaze.
Childish idiot…
