Transmigrating into a Wasteland Cannon Fodder Slag A [GL Yuri] - Chapter 14
From behind the wheel, Gu Xia saw that Yan An hadn’t made it into the car and was still locked in combat with Chen Hao. Without a second thought, she swung the car around, slammed her foot on the accelerator, and aimed straight for him.
Chen Hao, consumed with rage, had eyes only for Yan An. He never even noticed the car barreling toward him.
The roars of the zombies around them drowned out everything else.
He was like a maddened bull. Obsessed with killing Yan An, blind to everything else.
Gu Xia’s van struck him head-on, pinning him hard against the wall.
A spray of bl00d splattered across the windshield, as though it had burst directly onto her face.
With the last of his strength, Chen Hao drained the very core of his life. He unleashed one final blast of ice.
Frost spread over the car, sealing its frame, its seats, the steering wheel and Gu Xia herself. A thin layer on the surface, but beneath it, her organs and even her bl00d froze solid.
Yan An wrenched her foot free of the ice and swung her axe, crushing the skull of an oncoming zombie.
Fighting one or two at a time, she was becoming more and more adept.
After finishing off the nearest three, she saw more rushing toward her. Calmly, she unclipped the megaphone at her waist and let it blare her “beautiful” singing voice.
The sound wasn’t loud, more like a tinny speaker, but it was enough to draw the zombies away. She hooked it onto a fuel barrel, leaving it there as bait.
Then she hurried to the car, yanked the frozen door open, and saw Gu Xia encased in ice. There was no time to heal her here. She pulled her free and carried her past the distracted zombies, checking the vehicles parked nearby.
Only the van still had its keys. Yan An quickly laid Gu Xia in the back seat, slid behind the wheel, and sped away from the gas station.
They had nearly lost their lives there. Staying any longer would’ve been suicide.
But even after several hundred meters, unease nagged at Yan An.
That bastard Chen Hao had survived swarms of zombies before. What if he wasn’t dead yet?
She stopped the van, spotted a motorcycle nearby, and rode back.
First, she checked if Chen Hao was truly dead. When her hand brushed his corpse, a crystal suddenly appeared in her palm. She squeezed it instinctively, and it dissolved into light, sinking into her body.
There was no time to examine it. She quickly left the scene.
At the station entrance, she paused, flicking her lighter between her fingers. Inside, the zombies were gathering in greater and greater numbers. One flick and the entire gas station would erupt, taking everything nearby with it.
But in the end, she pocketed the lighter.
Blowing it sky-high would erase a much-needed shelter. Better to leave it. For the next desperate survivors, it could mean life or death.
With her own off-key singing still echoing in the distance, she rode the motorcycle back to the van, slipped inside, and started driving again.
The zombies that had followed her on the bike pounded at the van, but she ignored them, flooring the gas until they were left behind.
In daylight, the devastation looked even worse. Cars overturned, motorcycles toppled, bl00d and body parts everywhere, and zombies loitering near abandoned vehicles.
The van roared past. A few zombies gave chase but were quickly left behind.
Thankfully, traffic was sparse here. Yan An soon found a quiet stretch free of zombies.
She hurried to the back seat, grabbed Gu Xia’s hand, and poured her healing ability into her.
Chen Hao’s F-rank frost had frozen her through the car, but even his final strike hadn’t been lethal. With treatment, the worst was already reversing. Rest and recovery would do the rest.
When she’d wake, though, Yan An couldn’t say. She wasn’t a doctor.
Still, she had her own goal. From here, it was three to four hours to Pingzhou’s military base.
The base was on an island which was once a tourist spot, but also heavily fortified. Sea, land, air, everything was covered.
From there, survivors would be evacuated by ship or plane to the Eastern Federation’s shelters.
Rescue was still ongoing. If they made it in time, they’d be saved.
As for Gu Xia wanting to head to the city, that wasn’t Yan An’s concern. She knew where she needed to go.
Yet she still chose a route that cut through the outskirts of the city. Zombies thickened along the way, chasing the van before eventually dispersing again.
She didn’t drive fast. The highway would’ve taken three and a half hours, but she’d chosen the national road with two extra hours at least.
Call it a small concession, in case Gu Xia still wanted the city.
After about an hour, Yan An checked the rearview mirror.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Gu Xia was sitting upright in the back seat, dazed and wide-eyed.
Yan An slammed the brakes and twisted around, blurting, “When did you wake up?”
Just minutes ago she’d checked, and Gu Xia had still been lying there unconscious. Now she was upright, staring blankly. No wonder Yan An jumped.
The van hadn’t even fully stopped when zombies swarmed, slamming at the sides with clawed hands.
The van was sturdier than it looked; the blows left marks but no real damage.
At Yan An’s voice, Gu Xia’s hazy eyes shifted toward her, slowly sharpening into clarity. “What?”
“I asked, when did you wake up?” Yan An frowned. Was she addled from the frost?
Could be. Her whole body had been frozen? Her organs, bl00d, and most likely her brain?
“Just now,” Gu Xia murmured, gaze flicking to the zombies outside. Assessing her surroundings, she quickly realized where they were.
“Where are we headed?” From the rising number of zombies, she could tell they’d already left the outskirts.
“Pingzhou Military Base,” Yan An replied casually, as though it should’ve been obvious.
“Why not take the highway?”
Gu Xia was a local, born and raised. She’d been to Pingzhou Island countless times and knew the faster routes.
“You tell me,” Yan An shot back with a raised brow.
Of course, the real reason was to give her time to wake up—so she wouldn’t have to turn back later. But Yan An wasn’t about to admit that.
It took Gu Xia a moment to remember. She was supposed to be heading into the city. “Sorry. Just woke up and I’m still a little out of it.”
“No problem.” Yan An smiled. “So what’s it going to be? Are you coming with me to the military base, or heading into the city on your own?”
She needed to make sure once more. Once the decision was set, there’d be no turning back.
Gu Xia slipped the pack off her shoulders and checked through its contents again. “I have to go home first.”
Seeing her about to get out of the van, Yan An immediately stopped her. “I’ll get out. The van’s yours.”
At the moment, in terms of fighting strength, she was still the stronger one.
There were several zombies outside. Gu Xia couldn’t afford to die here before even getting started.
Yan An pulled everything out of her own pack, thought for a moment, and even left her axe behind. “Good luck.”
“Yan An!” Gu Xia called after her.
“Hm?” She turned, smiling.
“Stay safe.”
“You too.”
With that, Yan An pushed open the door, kicked away the zombie pounding on it, and with her dagger already in hand, drove two quick thrusts into its skull before shutting the door again.
After clearing out the few zombies around the van, she waved at Gu Xia through the window, then sprinted down the street. Before long she found a decent-looking SUV. Checking that there were no zombies inside, she slipped in and started it before the others could catch up.
When she looked back toward the van, it was already pulling away.
Yan An shrugged. “Cold-hearted woman.”
Not even a wave goodbye. Then again, Gu Xia must be terribly worried about her family.
She started the SUV, driving onto the highway according to her memorized route.
This was still just the very edge of the outskirts, yet there were already so many zombies. The city center would only be worse.
Gu Xia had no awakened ability. Going alone was practically suicide.
That thought made Yan An slam her foot on the accelerator, inhale sharply, and spin the SUV around to chase after her.
How could the heroine die here?! She wasn’t going back for Gu Xia. She was just after the heroine’s luck.
Yan An kept her mouth shut. Otherwise, her words would be even more stubborn than a dead duck’s.
