Transmigrating into a Wasteland Cannon Fodder Slag A [GL Yuri] - Chapter 21
In the end, Yan An and Gu Xia left the mall. Fang Qiang couldn’t stop them.
Hei Ye considered it, but didn’t push. The RV still needed three days of work, and they had promised to return by then.
Whether they would make it back was a matter of luck. Absolute strength and luck. One couldn’t succeed without the other.
Gu Xia had awakened three abilities, all of them pretty reliable. What was most important, however, was that her Infinite Duplication and Time Control abilities were both upgradable. It was easy to imagine how terrifying they could become once they were fully leveled up.
Of course, Yan An’s abilities weren’t bad either. Space and Restoration could also be incredibly powerful if used correctly, not to mention her frightening innate ability. With the two of them teamed up and a little caution, getting to the city center wouldn’t be a problem.
The only issue was that Gu Xia was still ignoring her after she had called her “wife.” They had been traveling for a while, and Gu Xia hadn’t said a single word to her, which was really starting to get on Yan An’s nerves.
“Guzi-jie, I was just putting on a show for them! Besides, we’re a couple anyway, so what’s the big deal with calling you my wife?”
Even though they both knew their “relationship” was just a pretense, neither of them had ever called it out. Before, with Yan An’s selfish, self-sacrificing attitude, Gu Xia would have definitely brought it up. But now, Yan An had changed completely, as if she were a different person.
With the apocalypse and the awakening of more and more bizarre abilities, it wasn’t impossible for someone to have their personality completely rewritten. It was only after awakening her own abilities that Gu Xia truly understood how incredible they were.
So, what exactly was going on with Yan An?
Noticing Gu Xia’s gaze, Yan An looked back and smiled. “What’s wrong?”
Gu Xia’s only response was silence.
Was this woman still mad?
Yan An didn’t try to coax her, instead pedaling faster. Before they left the mall, she had grabbed two bicycles from a bike shop. Driving a car would cause traffic jams, and a motorcycle was too noisy. Electric bikes would have been a better choice. They were fast and quiet but they couldn’t find any at the time.
Still, a good bicycle wasn’t slow. It could keep up with an electric bike easily. Based on the distance, the ride should have taken about forty minutes if everything went smoothly, but with so many zombies on the road, they had to constantly change their route. Even so, as long as they didn’t attract any zombies, it would only add about an hour to their travel time.
However, nothing was ever that simple. Zombies were everywhere, and they couldn’t just avoid them just because they wanted to, even when they stuck to the smaller back alleys.
Yan An was pedaling with all her might. The faster she went, the sooner they would finish their mission. After about twenty minutes, she suddenly felt like something was off. She immediately stopped and waited for Gu Xia to pull up beside her.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Xia looked around. It was a little strange that they hadn’t encountered a single zombie even though they’d been sticking to the small alleys and back roads. Were they just incredibly lucky?
“Something’s not right.” Yan An’s brows were furrowed. Her gut feeling was never wrong.
The area they were in was a former shantytown that had been converted into a residential area. The buildings were small, three-story houses, and locals would often divide their homes into many small rooms to rent out. The population density here should have been pretty high.
The technology in this world was highly advanced, but the gap between the rich and poor was extreme. The rich got richer, and the poor got poorer. Medical care and other technological advancements were great, but only the wealthy could afford to enjoy them. It was a bit like a cyberpunk movie: on one side, dazzling skyscrapers and extravagant living, and on the other, ruins and landfills where people survived by scavenging.
While this world hadn’t reached that level yet, it was well on its way. The area they were in was already scheduled for redevelopment, which meant demolition. When that happened, the tenants would be forced to move even further away from the city center in search of cheaper rent, while the landlords would become rich overnight.
Right now, though, the project hadn’t started yet, and the area was still very crowded. And yet, the navigation map showed no red dots, meaning there were no living people here. Yan An could see on her Eagle Eye ability that there weren’t many zombies around, either. The problem was that too many cameras were broken, so the ones that were left couldn’t show them the whole picture of the city. Her Eagle Eye was also becoming very laggy. The cell phone signal was terrible, and even the navigation wasn’t working smoothly.
Yan An looked up, deciding that the best way to see far was to stand high. “Wait here.”
She grabbed onto the wall and climbed up quickly, her hands finding the railing before she pulled herself up onto the second floor. Getting to the roof was easy from there. There were stairs leading straight up. Once she got to the third floor, she looked out into the distance and saw that the zombies were all gathering in one place. She quickly recalled the map of the area.
Wasn’t that a school? It was right on their planned route. If they had just ridden straight through, they would have been swarmed by a horde of zombies.
Without a second thought, Yan An climbed down from the roof. Gu Xia was a little stunned, watching her move so nimbly. Everyone had awakened abilities, so why couldn’t she do that?
Yan An saw Gu Xia’s look and seemed to understand. She chuckled. “You just have to practice more.”
Gu Xia was speechless. She’d never seen this person exercise before, unless… She thought of something but wasn’t sure, so she put the thought aside for now.
Yan An pulled out her phone and checked the map for the school’s location. “There are no survivors at the school, so why are all the zombies going there?”
As soon as she said it, she heard a sound. The school bell.
Oh, right. Class bells, recess bells, music for morning exercises… they were all pretty loud. If you lived near a school, you couldn’t sleep in even if you wanted to.
Zombies were extremely sensitive to sound. The school bells were so loud that they would definitely attract zombies to the building, but this also meant that there were no survivors left in the school. The sound had lured all the surrounding zombies away. Yan An sighed. In the face of the zombie apocalypse, she could only protect herself and not do much more.
“Let’s go. We’ll take the long way around.”
There was no other option. Gu Xia nodded, her expression just as grim. It was more regrettable to lose an entire school than a random residential building.
The two of them changed direction, occasionally running into a few zombies along the way. They didn’t have to put in much effort. Gu Xia’s Air Compression silently took them out. As the sound of the school bell faded away, they started to encounter zombies again. Without any living people to chase, the zombies had gone from a frenzied state to a silent one.
However, no matter what route they took, they would encounter a large number of zombies. It was impossible to force their way through.
“Guzi-jie, want to play a game?” Yan An stopped her bike on the side of the road.
“Huh?” Gu Xia replied.
Yan An finally took out the huge speaker she’d been lugging around since the mall and tied to her bike. She connected it to her phone with Bluetooth. She pulled Gu Xia’s hand, and they hid in a nearby alley. She then took out two sealed, disposable hazmat suits. She had gotten them from a pharmacy the night before when she had been scavenging for supplies. Food was plentiful in the city center, but supplies that could help them avoid zombies were extremely rare.
The two of them put on the hazmat suits and masks. Then they took a brush and smeared the bl00d of the zombies they had just killed all over their suits. They kept walking further into the alley until the Bluetooth connection was about to be lost before they stopped.
“Guzi-jie, I’ve got something exciting for you to see.”
The speaker suddenly blasted music, the abrupt sound shattering the silence. The quiet zombies went crazy and charged toward the source of the sound.
And they were about to take a big gamble.
