Transmigrating into a Wasteland Cannon Fodder Slag A [GL Yuri] - Chapter 22
It turned out Yan An’s idea was spot on. Covered in zombie bl00d, they were now being treated as one of them.
Countless zombies rushed past them without a single attack.
Yan An and Gu Xia quickly moved through the throng, dodging the undead and making their way outside. Soon, they had left the majority of the zombies behind.
The path ahead was much easier. While Yan An remained calm, Gu Xia’s heart was pounding out of her chest. She held her breath as zombies shuffled by, right next to her. Of course, the air inside her gas mask was so stuffy she nearly suffocated.
After walking for a while, she finally started to relax, seeing that the zombies truly weren’t attacking. But the knot in her stomach was still there.
With their protective gear now smeared in zombie bl00d, they skipped the detours and headed straight for the city center. The zombies, relying on their sense of smell and hearing more than their blurry vision, simply took them for their own kind and left them alone.
Even so, the two of them didn’t just walk openly down the main streets. They stuck to the smaller alleys with fewer zombies, making their way toward the city center.
Finally, after two hours, they reached Gu Xia’s home.
The area around her high-end apartment complex had far fewer people than the city outside. The map showed a number of red dots, many of them stacked on top of each other, indicating a significant number of survivors.
The building had blast-proof doors, and the underground garage could function like a fallout shelter. With enough food and water, the people inside could likely survive even a missile strike.
But this wasn’t a war; it was a zombie outbreak. Even with the property management’s quick response, they were no match for the speed of the virus.
As they stood outside, the stuttering feed from the security camera showed them a grim scene: those locked inside had already turned. The building had become a playground for zombies, and they couldn’t get out unless someone opened the door for them.
Naturally, no one was foolish enough to open the doors. As for why some people inside still got infected, it meant there was a carrier of the zombie virus among them.
The two made their way into a fire escape stairwell. Gu Xia casually took care of a zombie that had heard them but was too confused to attack after sensing they were “one of its own.”
Yan An patted Gu Xia on the shoulder, motioning for her to follow suit and take off her protective suit. It was covered in zombie bl00d, so taking it off required a bit of technique. Yan An deftly peeled off her suit, and Gu Xia, being smart, followed her lead.
They then took off their gas masks and put on their regular masks, which made it easier to breathe. Yan An took out a tissue and wiped the sweat off her face and neck before whispering, “What floor are you on?”
“My house is in the villa complex next door.”
Yan An’s eyes widened. “So we’re in the apartment complex?”
The area was split into a villa section and an apartment section. The fact that Gu Xia lived in a villa in the city center showed just how wealthy her family was. In her previous life, even with her inheritance, Yan An could only afford a comfortable life; she wasn’t so extravagant as to live in a villa in the city center.
“You should’ve said so sooner,” Yan An muttered.
Gu Xia sighed. “I did. You just didn’t hear me.”
There were only two protective suits, and no more to be found. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to grab more; she had searched the entire pharmacy, and there were only two in stock. She had also grabbed other common medications for colds, fevers, and stomachaches. Even though she had healing abilities, she knew she’d need to hide them later when they teamed up with more people. She didn’t want to be treated like an infinite “bl00d pack.”
As for Gu Xia, Yan An hadn’t hidden her spatial or healing abilities from her. She believed that to make it through, they needed to trust each other. She had taken things out of her space right in front of Gu Xia. What surprised her was that Gu Xia hadn’t asked a single question, either because she wasn’t curious or because she felt it was too private to ask.
“I’ve heard that wealthy people have guns. Does your family have guns?”
******
In this world, money was king. It was normal for rich families to own guns. Although there were restrictions, and you needed a permit. There were five levels of gun permits: Level 1 for handguns, Level 2 for small submachine guns, Level 3 for automatic rifles, Level 4 for shotguns, and Level 5 for light machine guns.
These levels were probably based on the type of gun, not just their power, as each type had many different models with varying power levels. The easiest to apply for was a handgun, which required a deposit of one million federal dollars in addition to the gun’s cost. The prices and deposits for the other guns varied based on their power.
Gu Xia glanced at her. “The Dongzhou Federation is a bit stricter than other places. You can only apply for a handgun. If you want more powerful guns, like you said, you have to go to the Safety Bureau.” Regular staff at the Safety Bureau were only equipped with handguns, but mid- and high-level personnel had access to a much better armory than any private collection.
Yan An nodded. “Then we still have to go to the Safety Bureau.”
Since she had mentioned it to Hei Ye and the others, she knew they had to go. If she hadn’t mentioned the Safety Bureau as their destination, Hei Ye and his people probably wouldn’t have let them leave. Even if they knew their chances of getting guns were slim, they still had to wait three days for the RV to be fixed, so they might as well try.
Gu Xia pulled a bottle of water from her backpack, took a few sips, and leaned against the wall. “I have a question for you.”
“Hm?” Yan An feigned confusion, but her heart was soaring. She thought Gu Xia would hold back her curiosity. This showed that their relationship was getting better. People who didn’t trust each other would be suspicious rather than ask directly.
Gu Xia looked up, and her eyes met Yan An’s, which were filled with amusement. She quickly looked away and said in a cool voice, “How did you know that zombies wouldn’t attack people covered in zombie bl00d?”
This is it. Yan An pulled out her phone, opened a video, lowered the volume, and handed the phone to Gu Xia. “Here, watch this.”
The silent video showed a small dog eating rotten flesh from a downed zombie. The dog didn’t turn but was covered in zombie bl00d. It then walked past a horde of zombies, making some noise, but none of them chased it.
“So, I was thinking, is the zombie virus only effective on humans for now? Before I recorded this, they were actually chasing the dog. But after it ate the rotten meat and got covered in zombie bl00d, they stopped.”
“Then I tested it with a drone. The first drone was shot down by zombies as soon as they heard it. So I covered a second drone in zombie bl00d. It flew down, and no zombies attacked it. Only when I turned the volume to the maximum did the zombies, annoyed by the sound, finally knock it down.”
That’s how Yan An was sure they could cover themselves in zombie bl00d and, as long as they weren’t too reckless, they could get through undetected. To be extra safe, she had also searched for something that could cover their entire bodies, and luckily, they found the protective suits.
“I see,” Gu Xia said with a hint of annoyance. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Yan An couldn’t help but laugh, showing her delight. “I wanted you to experience the thrill.” At the time in the pharmacy, there was no time to watch the video or explain everything.
Gu Xia just stared at her. “I really didn’t want that kind of thrill.”
